JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Dynasties don't have to be perfect or pretty. They just have to win - like the New England Patriots. The Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four years with a dominant second half Sunday night, wearing down the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21.
It wasn't overpowering, and at times it was downright ugly. But it was more than enough to match the Dallas Cowboys' run of the 1990s and certify the Patriots of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady as the NFL's latest dynasty.
With MVP Deion Branch tying a Super Bowl record for receptions with 11, Brady efficiently running the offense and Rodney Harrison sparking a smothering defense, the Patriots won their ninth successive postseason game. That ties the record of Vince Lombardi's Packers of the 1960s, and there's hardly any better company a team can keep.
The difference once again was an Adam Vinatieri field goal, this one a 22-yarder with 8:40 to go. New England won its other two Super Bowls by the margin of Vinatieri's kicks.
Philadelphia (15-4) got the ball back at its 4 with 46 seconds remaining. It was hardly enough time and far too much territory to cover against such a formidable foe.
Harrison got his second interception with 9 seconds remaining to end it.
Playing before a sea of mostly green jerseys in the crowd of 78,125, the Patriots made sure Philadelphia would not get its first pro sports title since 1983. Indeed, it's been 45 years since the Eagles won the NFL crown. And even though they made it to the Super Bowl for the first time in 24 seasons - after three straight conference championship flops - their season still ended in disappointment.
Corey Dillon, a newcomer to the championship game, scored the go-ahead points on a 2-yard run early in the fourth period. And when Branch wasn't running free and catching passes, the Patriots flaunted their versatility by again using linebacker Mike Vrabel to find the end zone. Vrabel has caught TD passes in two straight Super Bowls and has five TDs in as many career catches, not bad for a linebacker - or anyone else.
Brady wasn't as fluid as he was when he won the MVP awards in the 2002 and 2004 games, but he was on-target much of the time, finishing 23-for-33 for 236 yards and two TDs.
When the offense bogged down or turned over the ball, Harrison and his mates forced four turnovers, including a goal-line interception by the veteran safety. The Patriots (17-2) also had four sacks, making Donovan McNabb look ordinary, even skittish at times.
And while Terrell Owens' return from a seven-week injury layoff was an individual success - he had nine catches for 122 yards - it was not nearly the star turn that Branch made.
Branch's 11 catches covered 133 yards as he victimized one of the league's best secondaries. He was most instrumental on the opening drive of the second half, which set the tone for New England's 57th victory in its last 74 games.
While New England handled frequent blitzes, Branch caught four passes for 71 yards on the series that ended with Vrabel's TD.
The Eagles showed resilience by responding with a 74-yard drive on which Brian Westbrook accounted for 39 yards, including the 10-yard score. McNabb whipped a pass over the middle between two defenders for the TD.
Still, as winners always do, the Patriots reasserted themselves, effectively using screen passes against a tiring defense. Even when Eagles defenders shouted to each other to watch for the screen, New England made it work, particularly on Kevin Faulk's 14-yarder that preceded Dillon's 2-yard run to make it 21-14.
Vinatieri, who made last-second kicks to win the previous two Super Bowls, hit his chip shot to make it 24-14. When the Eagles came back on Greg Lewis' 30-yard TD reception with 1:48 remaining, things got tight.
Not that it bothered the Patriots. Not that anything ever bothers these Patriots, who were outgained 369 yards to 331, had fewer first downs and committed twice as many penalties.
Their victory gave New England its second team championship since the fall. This was hardly as dramatic as the long-suffering Red Sox winning the World Series. Still, Boston is the hub of champions.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The New England Patriots don't have to proclaim greatness. The NFL record book does it for them. The Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four years Sunday, 24-21 over the Philadelphia Eagles, and now they are challenging history.
It was their ninth straight postseason victory, equaling Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. It was coach Bill Belichick's 10th playoff victory in 11 games, one better than the great Lombardi. And it matched Dallas' run of three championships in four years in the early 1990s.
``We've never really self-proclaimed ourselves anything,'' said Tom Brady, who is 9-0 in the playoffs. ``If you guys say we're great, we'll accept the compliment.''
This one wasn't overpowering, and at times it was downright ugly. But not even Belichick seemed to care about that.
``To me this trophy belongs to these players,'' Belichick said. ``They met all comers this year, a very challenging year. We're thrilled to win. These players played great all year, their best in the big games and they deserve it, they really deserve it.''

``We did a great job of adjusting during the game,'' Branch said. ``It was physical; a lot of guys were bumped and bruised.''
The Eagles responded with a 74-yard drive. McNabb whipped a 10-yard pass over the middle between two defenders to Brian Westbrook for the TD.
Still, as winners always do, the Patriots reasserted themselves, effectively using screen passes against a tiring defense. ``When you're in the middle of it, you're not thinking about what you're doing,'' Weis said. ``Dynasties are talked about 10 years later.''
Sorry, Charlie, the Patriots are the talk of the league now.
The victory gave New England its second team championship since the fall, though this was hardly as dramatic as the long-suffering Red Sox winning the World Series. Still, this certifies Boston as the hub of champions.
Philadelphia's title drought goes on, but Owens certainly did his best to end it. The All-Pro receiver fulfilled his vow to start the Super Bowl, defying his doctor and playing with a metal plate and two screws in his right ankle.
``T.O. did a heck of a job,'' coach Andy Reid said. ``I was proud of the effort and they battled, but we came up just short - too many turnovers - and against such a tough football team you can't do that.''
Replay played a significant role on the first series. McNabb dropped the ball when he was hit by Willie McGinest and New England recovered at the Philadelphia 34. But Reid challenged that McNabb's knee was down when hit seconds before by Tedy Bruschi.
Replay showed McNabb, indeed, was down.
Philly put together the first good drive late in the opening period. Owens got open on a crossing pattern and gained 30 yards on third down, with a roughing penalty adding 9 yards, but a 16-yard sack by Mike Vrabel set back the Eagles.
Then McNabb threw a poor pass that Asante Samuel intercepted in the end zone, only to have it overturned because of illegal contact by linebacker Roman Phifer.
No matter. McNabb again threw a duck, which Harrison picked off at the 3.
But the Eagles got the ball again at the New England 45 after a punt. Three plays later, another turnover: Randall Gay knocked the ball loose from L.J. Smith and Samuel recovered at the 38.
Once more, the defense held, and when the Eagles got the ball back at their 19, they finally finished off a drive.
Todd Pinkston, often overshadowed by Owens, looked like his illustrious teammate on receptions of 17 and 40 yards. On the longer one, he soared high for yet another misthrow by McNabb and took it away from Gay.
On third down from the 6, McNabb hung in the pocket and waited for Smith to get free in the end zone for the game's first score with 9:55 left in the half.
It was the first time New England trailed this postseason.
Brady then made a rare mistake, fumbling at the Philly 13. Darwin Walker recovered New England's first giveaway of the postseason.
It didn't lead to anything for the Eagles, and after a 29-yard punt by Dirk Johnson, the Pats drove 37 yards to tie it at 7. Brady found Givens behind Lito Sheppard in the right corner of the end zone for a 4-yard score, and Givens mocked Owens' wing flap after the touchdown with 1:10 remaining.

BOSTON -- The newest version of Titletown is the six-state region of New England, which is filled with sports-crazed fans who are relishing their recent run of championship glory.
Some of those fans are members of the Red Sox and Patriots, who have had plenty of fun rooting for each other over the last year.
While the Red Sox were the cause of all the drama, thrills and history during the month of October, they gladly watched their football brethren methodically reel off a third Super Bowl victory in the last four years with Sunday night's 24-21 win over the Eagles.
"What the Patriots have accomplished is truly remarkable and a testament to teamwork, dedication, toughness and smarts," said Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. "We commend the Kraft family, Bill Belichick and his staff, Scott Pioli and his staff, and all the players. It's great to be able to continue bragging about our football team all around the American League."
Said Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino: "We at the Red Sox are both friends of the ownership and fans of the team. We admire their accomplishments and readily admit to be inspired by them. They have "raised the bar" for all New England sports teams, and we are especially impressed by their stability, unity, and shared sense of purpose-starting with the Krafts at the top and permeating the entire organization. They also recognize, as we all should, that preparation and hard work are the keys to success, in sports as in life."
The Red Sox are unique in knowing how it feels to be the only baseball team in history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit during postseason, not to mention snapping an 86-year championship drought. But even they can't fathom what it is like to get on top and stay on top the way the Patriots have. With Spring Training approaching next week, the Pats have given the Sox something to strive for.
"I have so much respect for the entire organization, because success like this starts at the top," Red Sox ace Curt Schilling wrote in an e-mail. "From Mr. Kraft to the 53rd man on the roster, the entire organization is about one thing, team, and it shows. In this day and age there are so few franchises run so well, for so long."
New Englanders can only hope the championship glory will stay contagious, like it has over the past year of overwhelming success. The Patriots started the fun by downing the Carolina Panthers in an exhilarating Super Bowl triumph on Feb. 1, 2004. The Red Sox capped off their October for the ages by clinching a World Series sweep against the Cardinals on Oct. 27, 2004. Then came the Pats -- again -- on Sunday night.
Can it get any sweeter for a New England sports fan?
"It's up to us to keep this winter/fall, winter/fall championship streak going," said Red Sox owner John W. Henry. "It has once again energized everyone in our organization. We are full of admiration and feel the great warmth this third Super Bowl victory brings."
Can the Red Sox keep the championships going? Schilling hopes so, but he also knows how much goes into it.
"It takes a lot of good fortune and health, too," said Schilling. "It starts at the top, and [in my opinion], both teams have the right kind of people, in Mr. Werner, Mr. Henry, and Mr. Kraft, for this to happen."
And like the Red Sox, the success of the Patriots has had an obvious trickle-down effect throughout the organization.
"They are class personified," said Schilling. "From the future [Hall of Fame quarterback] who always deflects the positive attention to his teammates, to the coach who makes sure everyone -- players, fans, media -- understands that no player will ever be bigger than the team."
There have been some classy exchanges between the two franchises over the last few years. The Patriots were recognized for their first two Super Bowl championships with pregame ceremonies in the 2002 and 2004 home openers at Fenway Park.
Sox center fielder Johnny Damon and Schilling brought the World Series trophy to Gillette Stadium prior to a Patriots-Bills game on Nov. 14, 2004.
Henry and Patriots owner Robert Kraft have developed a bond over the last few years.
"I said Saturday that even if the Patriots were to lose there should be a parade so that everyone could say thanks to this extraordinary team and organization," Henry said. "Last week I told Robert that his family had created an atmosphere in New England in which we all expect to win now rather than to lose."
Red Sox manager Terry Francona invited Patriots coach Bill Belichick to sit in the dugout during an exhibition game last year in Spring Training. And while the Sox were making their epic run in October, Belichick and Pioli, the Pats vice president of personnel, made sure to leave a few encouraging voice messages for Francona.
That sentiment was reciprocated over the past few weeks.
"I actually talked to Scott for about 10 minutes. I was trying to leave him a message and he took the call," said Francona on Monday, as he was driving to Florida for Spring Training. "I've left Bill three or four messages. I left him one this morning because I was on 95 heading South and I was just starting to see the beginnings of Philadelphia people coming back on 95, and they didn't look too happy. I thought he'd get a kick out of that."
What Francona appreciates most about watching the Pats is their business-like work ethic, from the front office all the way down to the field.
"I was actually marveling before they won last night, the way they run their organization, they're great people, they have a great organization," Francona said. "The consistency to which they've performed is unbelievable. They do things correctly. I think the thing that more than anything impresses me is their 'we' mentality. They're so consistent throughout the organization with 'we' and not 'I' and that really is impressive."
With each championship the Patriots win, they set a higher standard for success for the other pro teams in Boston. But that's fine with the Red Sox.
"I was pulling for them big-time," Francona said. "We've got a long way to go to catch up to what they've done. That's pretty impressive."
"We don't compete with the Patriots," said Epstein, "we just try to learn from them."

That's cool (the second pic..."borrowed" T's pic ), and who knows...that could be the situation next year too. The first team in NFL history to win three back to back Super Bowls and four championships in five seasons or something like that
(I hate it when teams do so good, then I start to like them...I now have no choice but to respect the Pats and their dynasty  ...you have won again T ).
