Coroner: Baby died on heater
Authorities investigating Shelby infant's death

News Journal staff report

Candles, a wreath and a bear in a crocheted blanket surround a tree outside the Shelby apartment complex where an infant died Friday.

SHELBY -- A 6-month-old baby died Friday while laying on a baseboard heater, the Richland County Coroner's Office reported.

Gage Damien Conley died of "thermal injury" in a bedroom of his family's apartment at Shelby Villa Apartments, 125 Plymouth St., coroner's assistant Paul Jones said.

"That was the cause of death, and that's all we know until we see the rest of the test results," Jones said.

As a criminal probe into the death continues, Richland County Children Services was granted emergency custody Monday of Conley's 18-month-old brother, Valick Conley, after a hearing in Richland County Juvenile Court.

Randy Parker, director of the agency, said Children Services removed Valick Conley from the apartment after his brother's body was found Friday. The children are the sons of Stevie Conley and Elizabeth Rader.

"It appeared to be a long time between the time (Gage Conley) went to bed and the time they checked on him (the next day), which raised our suspicions," Parker said. "It appears there was no supervision," which could constitute neglect, he said.

"Anyone by reflex would react (to the heat) by rolling off or by screaming. Someone should have heard him," Parker said. "He had been there for awhile."

Jones said the time of death was likely early Friday morning, but he could not be more specific. The Shelby Fire Department responded to the address on a report of a dead body at 11:58 a.m.

The body of the 6-month-old boy was taken to Summit County Medical Center in Akron, where an autopsy was performed Monday, Jones said.

A meeting was held Monday with the coroner's office, prosecutors and Richland County Children Services.

Phone calls seeking comment from the prosecutor's office were not returned.

The most disturbing part of this for me, is that I almost moved into those apartments... Things like that going on, right around you...

Such bastards. Like those teenagers in NY who threw the baby out the window because it was crying. (That baby wasn't even a full day old.)

There are alot of bad parents out there. They don't realize children are a blessin to us and they take their lives for no reason. Plain out mean and cruel.

I feel for those children who are abused. I wish I could put a boot up their parents butt but that would not do any good.

They are just evil!!!

A lot of the time they do post the address here. It seemed most everyone knew about it before the papers came out though. This is not fact, but I was told that the baby rolled off the bed and was between the bed and the wall on top of the heater. I can't justify any of this. First, the baby should have been in a crib. If not, it should have been propped up with pillows or something to keep it from rolling. Not to mention, you should never place a heater in a place like that. What if the blankets hung down on it? Besides, shouldn't you check on your children? No matter what I'ver heard, I don't see any way to excuse the parents behavior.
