PostFri Jan 21, 2005 10:09 pm    Favorite Sci-Fi Shows, Movies, etc.

What are your top three favorite Sci-Fi Shows, Movies, etc? Rank them.
Don't be to specific, like ST: TNG. If you like Star Trek, say Star Trek. However, if you like no more than one ST, then say "ST: ___" Same goes with SW, etc.

My favorites:
1. Star Wars
2. Star Trek
3. Don't know a third...

1. Firefly
2. Stargate SG-1
3. Stargate Atlantis
4. Deep Space Nine
5. Battlestar Galactica 2005
6. Star Wars
7. Babylon 5
8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
9. Angel

Those are in arbitrary order....I like all of them a lot.
These next are a few steps down.

10. The other Treks
11. Earth: Final Conflict
12. Space: Above and Beyond

The ones I don't like so much:

13. Battlestar Galactica 1978
14. Andromeda
15. Mutant X

Couldn't stick to just 3 for obvious reasons, but if I had to pick 3, I'd go for the SCIFI FRIDAY block: Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica 2005. Three great hours of scifi in a row, every week.

Hmmm...

Best films:
Star Wars (none in particular; the franchise in general)

Best Series:
Firefly

Series I'm most looking forward to seeing:
Stargate Atlantis (I havn't seen any of it yet but it looks great)

Movie I'm most looking forward to seeing:
Now this is a dilemma...It's either "Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith" or the Firefly film "Serenity"...

Plus, there's the Babylon 5 film coming out but I don't think that'll be 'til next year...

Star Trek (all of 'em)
Stargate SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Battlestar Galactica (the new one)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Firefly
Dark Angel
Frank Herbert's Dune
Frank Herbert's Children of Dune
Every Trek movie except I and V
Smallville (I'm just getting into it)
Farscape
Relic Hunter
The Lost World
The Outer Limits
The Collector
Star Wars (original trilogy)

Those are in no particular order. I haven't seen the two new Star Wars movies so I can't comment on them, the original trilogy is pretty cool. It's too bad that both Buffy and Angel are gone, I'm hoping for a movie (there' going to be a Firefly movie? That's awesome!)

Space: The Imagination Station started showing Stargate SG-1 about a year ago (September 2003) and I got hooked, they came out with Season 7 in September 2004, Season 6 on December 25, and now Season 8 shall premiere on February 10. I'll finally be caught up!

Atlantis is a great spin-off, it's going through that rough period that every show has, especially those that are spin-offs. Hopefully it will find its footing soon.

Farscape was cool show that I got into late in the game, but I think it has the best series finale ever (they ended it with 'To be continued'). I get the miniseries this spring. I enjoyed the Battlestar Galactica miniseries and now look forward to watching episode 2 of the new series tonight. I hope to get hooked on it since my other shows are all winding down.

Dark Angel is an excellent show that was a little too short lived, but I liked the plot. Relic Hunter is a nice action/adventure show with historical tie-ins, again I'm more of a casual viewer though. The Lost World is good if you view the episodes individually and if you don't mind that they sort of ruined Doyle's entire concept in the creation of the series. But it is a good aside from that, nice plots.

Smallville is fascinating, again I just love watching the episode and the special effects. I haven't seen anything outside of Season 4, Space started airing that in September and I started watching it out of boredom, but now I think it's pretty cool and I look forward to catching up when I get the chance. The Outer Limits is an excellent anthology series (the new one) with some cool episodes, it's always a nice change in pace. And I can't wait for season 2 of The Collector, I found season 1 quite intriguing.

I've also seen Mutant X, Andromeda, and Jeremiah but I must say that I can't really get into any of them. Mutant X is just . . . weird. It's very pop culture, but I don't think the acting is quite good enough. Andromeda was okay, although the sudden change in the actors meant that I lost touch with the show, so now I only watch it if it's the only thing on. Jeremiah is one of those shows that is either a 'you like the concept or you don't like it', and in this case I don't really like it, it just doesn't appeal to me.

Yep, I'm an SF geek

Yup, Serenity was originally scheduled to come out in April, and its first trailers would have been attached to Elektra.

However, when Universal reshuffled their 2005 schedule, Serenity was moved to September 30th. The first trailers will now be attached to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

There's not a whole lot of difference when you stop to think about it. Both SF and Fantasy make use of imaginary techniques to solve paranormal situations. The only real difference between SF and fantasy is whether they justify things using technobabble or magicbabble.

You know the body-switching episodes, the "characters go crazy" episodes, the "possessed by malicious intelligence" episodes? Those can occur as easily on Angel as they can on Star Trek. The only real difference is whether they call the perpetrator and alien or a demon.

Or whether its in a Hotel or on a starship in the future.

You can see it like you can sure. But i always think that Technological impossible things are something for Science fiction and Mystical impossible things are for Fantasy.

Other sci-fi besides Star Trek? Oh, lets see. Red Dwarf, StarGate SG-1 (Go Sam!), the first three seasons of Sliders, Quantum Leap (Go Sam!), BBCs Space Island One (Come in Unity), Twelve Monkeys, The Invisible Man TV series, I used to be completely obsessed with the ALIEN Trilogy (no longer a trilogy) but Resurrection ruined it for me, I have replaced the ALIEN movies with a more healthy obsession with Groundhog Day, Miracle Mile, and Napoleon Dynamite but those arent sci-fi. I guess thats about it.

Oh yah, if you like Bab5, theres going to be a big screen shadow war movie, not made for TV but an actual theatrical release!

Excellent. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the only movie next year that I know for sure I'm going to see in theatres, I'm going opening day if at all possible. (But my name sort of makes that obvious)

As for the difference between fantasy and SF, I like David Eddings' definition, "When you travel back in time, science fiction has to tell you how the watch works. Fantasy just tells you that it works, and leaves it at that." (I'm paraphrasing . . . )

But I think that they deserve a place on the shelf together. I like both, I write both, and they really serve the same purpose, most good SF and fantasy explores issues that matter to us in contemporary life using alien settings and extraordinary circumstances to tell us a story that's both entertaing with a rich subtext. Oh . . . and some are just goofy

Anyway, this is a squabble for another topic. I won't try separating my SF from my fantasy--I'll build a horribly complicated machine to do it for me! Yes, with the touch of a button, you too can separate SF from fantasy! Buy it online today!
