Billy Zepeda, a 17-year-old senior, models the T-shirt that got him sent home from R.A. Long High School on Thursday.
An openly gay student at R.A. Long High School was sent home Thursday for wearing a T-shirt with the words "Too Gay To Function" written on the front.
A teacher told senior Billy Zepeda that his lime green shirt, decorated with marker-drawn rainbows, was "inappropriate and offensive" to homosexuals, the 17-year-old said. He was sent home to change.
Students fashioned shirts Thursday for "make-your-own-T-shirt" day, part of the school's week-long homecoming festivities. School officials said students weren't given specific rules for their designs, and shirts were deemed inappropriate on a case-by-case basis.
"If a faculty member feels it offends them or is inappropriate ... then they send them home to change," said Ty Morris, assistant principal. "You can't micromanage it."
Besides Zepeda, two other students were asked to leave school, Morris said. One student wore a cut-off shirt that exposed his stomach. Another had an "inappropriate comment," said Morris, who did not elaborate.
"It's quite aggravating," Zepeda said. "I can't wear my shirt because it's discriminating against gays. ... Why would I disciminate against myself?"
R.A. Long teacher Jan McIntyre, who Zepeda said sent him home, couldn't be reached for comment Thursday.
Zepeda said the shirt, which features the phrase "Too Gay To Function" from the teen flick "Mean Girls," wasn't meant to be offensive.
"Everybody that I talked to today, I asked, does my shirt offend you? Everyone has said no," he said, adding that "everyone knows" about his homosexuality. "I kind of feel like it's discriminating."
Some R.A. Long students wore gangster-themed shirts with red bandanas draped out of their back pockets, students said. Another had a shirt "talking about his gender area," Zepeda said. Several students wore mini cut-off shirts, one wore a bubble-wrap shirt and another a duct-tape vest, students said.
"It's ridiculous that they're pinpointing Billy," said Sara Sanchez, an 18-year-old R.A. Long senior. "There were no guidelines whatsoever, and then they're trying to enforce it."
Zepeda's mother told him he should go back to school wearing the shirt, but he didn't want to cause any more disturbance.
"She (the teacher) accused him of bashing gays," Lisa Zepeda said. "To me, Billy was just being Billy. ... I would think, by now, that anyone would know Billy is anything but a gay-basher." |
I think this it total bull the kid is openly gay and they claim they sent him home because he was gay bashing with that shirt. Why would a gay person bash on himself? Lets hear what you have to think if you want to see the story or anything else in the site go to.

Tss, at our school you cannot even where a band shirt or else you get sent home. But yes, I do think that could be a very controversial shirt so I agree with their decision. There are other better ways to express your veiws.

once again shows how shallow you are the only thing you can attack a person is based on their weight. if you can't controbute to a conversation with just a attack than don't post in it.

How is it biased? I seen polls about gay issues on this forum with basically the same questions just worded different.

The yes selection automatically gives the impression that if you agree, you are a homophobe. A simple yes or no would have been sufficient. (which is why i chose other)

It is totally biased. If you vote they made the right decision, you are also voting that you are a homophobe, because you didn't seperate the two. Ask anyone.

No, it's just a biased poll, and yes, you will change it.
BTW, who said local news could be posted? Isn't it in the rules that no local stories are to go up? I could have sworn I put that in there...

You call it shallow. I call it reaility, if I point out that you are fat you probably just are fat. And not that it's any problem with me, but you truely are of unhealthy size and to me a truely disgusting creature. If that's how you rather want to hear it, then so be it.

Quote: | Lets try to aim more at national or international news stories, ok? If I post a Subway in Presque Isle, Maine was robbed, it won't mean anything to you. If it were the store was robbed, and several people killed, etc... maybe, but localized stories like that really cut down on the discussion that could be made.
|
I get the point you were trying to make here, but we can contain it to the homosexual, etc... topic in CC, I'd rather not have highly controversial topics popping up all over the forums, thank you.
