Breaking: Catholic Archbishop Abducted in Iraq
Monday, January 17, 2005
VATICAN CITY A Roman Catholic archbishop in Mosul, Iraq, has been kidnapped, the Vatican (search) said Monday.
It identified the kidnapped man as Archbishop Basile Georges Casmoussa, 66, of the Syrian Catholic Church (search), one of the branches of the Roman Catholic Church.
"The Holy See deplores in the firmest way such a terrorist act," a Vatican statement said, demanding that he be freed immediately.
A priest in Iraq said on condition of anonymity that the archbishop was walking in front of the Al-Bishara church in Mosul's eastern neighborhood of Muhandeseen when gunmen forced him into a car and drove away.
Mosul (search) is a northern Iraqi city that in recent months has been a hotspot of violent insurgency.
The reason for the kidnapping was unclear, but Christians tens of thousands of whom live in and around Mosul have been subjected to attacks in the past.
Christians make up just 3 percent of Iraq's 26 million people. The major Christian groups in Iraq include Chaldean-Assyrians (search) and Armenians. There are small numbers of Roman Catholics.
Officials estimate that as many as 15,000 Iraqi Christians have left the country since August, when four churches in Baghdad and one in Mosul were attacked in a coordinated series of car bombings. The attacks killed 12 people and injured 61 others.
Another church was bombed in Baghdad in September.

Actually, that's not true. Only in certain regions of Iraq, like Mosul (where this happened) are things really that bad. But then again, does the media show you anything else?

Read this article today, about journalists not going outside anymore. So the only source they've got is the US military. So it's probably a coloured news picture that we're getting. I'm sure it's not a total chaos, but I bet it's worse than they make it appear in the media. Since it's in their own interest it looks as stable as possible.

Actually, no. It's the opposite. Things are BETTER than the Media shows, and that's the point. All the MEDIA shows is bad things in Iraq--rarely are good things seen, therefore the opposite is true.

This is too bad, that they've turned from just a war, to simply taking civilians hostage.
Does anyone if they want money or something? The Catholic Church has plenty of that.
I'm kinda sorta Catholic, too. Not that I'm religious, I just know all about the religion, Although I once was... Oh well.

Turned from just a war? This has happened since the actual war ended. Where have you been?

Well, I look at it like this. The media get their information from a source, this source has an interest in something and will make things appear in their favour. But feel free to disagree.

Well, the war isn't really over. They're still fighting.

That COULD happen, but either way, it's the media that ends up spinning it.

I believe that we've won the War in Iraq, and now this is ONLY a front on the War on Terror. In the sense of the War in Iraq, that's over, in my opinion. (Especially considering there's no more Iraqi army)

In all seriousness, catholicism will be the undoing of society as we know it. The things that catholicism does. Like during the election. Telling its followers it would be a sin to vote for Kerry. No one should have the power to say that. Its not a determination by the catholics, its not their place. Total BS.

We're totally evil. Kerry would have won had it not been for us. Why have I done this atrocity?

Your sarcasm is not appreciated. Im trying to have a serious discussion about what problem I have with catholicism. The least you could do is take it seriously.

Ok in all seriousness then. Kerry certainly did not lose because of us evil Catholics. Kerry lost because he is a complete and utter pansy. No one knew where he stood in anything. All he said was "I went to Vietnam and im not George Bush, vote for me." Sadly a lot of people rallied to him. Anyways the topc is about Catholiscm. Im Catholic and im sure you won't believe this but I did not vote for Kerry cause they told me not to. They didn't EVER say it was a sin to vote for him. They dislike his views and simply stated it. Unless they literally said its a sin which is kinda funny. But you're absolutely right. Not putting Kerry is office will definitly be societies undoing. Agreed.

The catholics, like any group, effected the election. But not solely. I know this.
And I know you vote how you want, but most people rely on the church to make all their decisions.
And yes, they did outright state that. Because Kerry supports abortion, and thats a sin to them, they decided that voting for Kerry would be a sin, and told everyone that. Total BS.
As for societies undoing, it has nothing to do with the election. Just catholicism in general.

Many groups affected it just like you said. Besides whats the problem? Catholics made their choice. This is a DEMOCRACY. They went for who they felt was the right man. Who cares about the reason? If Catholics rallied to vote for Kerry en masse, we wouldn't be having this discussion im sure.

No, my problems with catholicism, HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ELECTION. At all. Absolutely nothing. It was just one point. They abuse their influence over people to push their own agenda. Its not right.
