That's not true, and you know it.
Either way, a one world government, although it would be cool, would be HORRIBLE. I would not support it. |
Why not? |
I don't want us to have to give up our sovereignty, pay high taxes, and bow to the will of countries like France. |
In other words, you want to keep the right to invade other countries, even when others object? Is that what you mean? |
Uh, no. I just don't want countries like France to run us. And when others object to us defending our own country, we can still defend ourselves.

The point is, we would not bow to anyone. Nor would anyone bow to us. All countries would become equal. No one is better than anyone else. We would not be ruled by France.

From what? The point of a world government would be to bring us together as a global community, and to stop or at least greatly reduce war between countries as we know it . . . I'm not going to naively say that war will automatically disappear, but moving toward a world government would help. We are after all just one planet of people.

The bigger the government the smaller the people.
We need less governing, NOT more. Univeral government is a disaster waiting to happen, in the US, the federal government has taken nearly all control from the individual states, and there is NO regional control.
I don't find it fair that densely populated New York and LA have a voice about how farmers in Kansas and Minnesota want to do things. With World government it would be 3rd world regions controlled by the superpowers like the US and the EU, which would have virtually all of the controll over a way of life which we don't understand.

But people are small. We are small and insignificant. Without our technology, we are perhaps the weakest beings on the planet (viruses rule us).
With the advent of the Internet, and instantaneous communication across the globe, it is becoming even more evident that events somewhere else can and will affect your life. As we get more technology, we are going to become more interconnected.
I agree that right now, a world government would be a corrupt organization ruled by those with money and power (what government isn't? ) But we shouldn't let that deter us from the goal of achieving one, rather we should try and turn our minds to finding a way to establish one without that level of corruption.
The problem of course is that humans don't want it . . . humans are by nature competitive people who like superiority over each other.

Those are some quality, valid points. But I think that a world government would be WAAAAAAAAAY off from now, and I wouldn't want it for at least 30 years.

But our technology is the accumulation of our power.
Your comment basically states that without our power, we have no power.
Mankind is the most intelligent, the most powerful, and simply the greatest force that nature ever unleashed on itself. As a collective we are the most powerful force in the universe, we just don't know it yet.
No one person in insignificant. I really loathe that attitude. Without people, NOTHING is significant, NOTHING. We created signifgance. Without us, there is nothing. Without us here to interpret it, its all just meaningless nonsence.

Indeed. I think I probably mentioned this, but one of the reasons that a world government worked in the Trek timeline was that Earth was just emerging from a third World War, where most nations had been reduced to little or no power and the political scene was rather chaotic. With the advent of the warp drive, and the realization that we are not alone, Cochrane sort of provided the catalyst for the establishment of world government. It's from times like those that entire civilization shifts can best occur. Otherwise, you meet with resistance to change, which can be rather hard to overcome.

I don't think I even want that idea iny my life time. Because we would become interconnected too deeply and we aren't ready for that. Can you imagine of some countries broke away and a huge World Civil War happened? Complete and utter chaos.

Ooooh. That's a SUPERB point. Yes, a World Civil War would be so devastating. But hey, Star Wars could happen on Earth!

Is that like giving up the Queen. I don't think theres any way I'd do that. |
i would give up my queen and new King in an instant. Only bad things can come from a Royal family once they have lost all power and purpose and in Holland they have certainly shown they have lost all power and purpose. |
How can you give up your Royal family so easily? They're like the representatives to the country.

I only agree with this part of your post, but agree with it wholeheartedly. Vincent Van Gogh said, when describing painters who didn't pay enough attention to what they were painting:
"They cannot understand that the figure of a labourer, some furrows in a plowed field, a bit of sand, sea and sky, are serious objects, so difficult but at the same time so beautiful, that it is indeed worth while to deote one's life to the task of expressing the poetry hidden in them."
