something that really bothers me in the earliest episodes, and also from the battles in the later episodes of the lack of shields.. it looks like they are firing directly on the hull, and many times it's damaging directly aswel...

Yeah it was sad that was in the later seasons when you see the huge battles. I totally agree, the ships would be destroyted so fast and with like one shot with a phaser. It was quite sad but i suppose the battles might have gone on too long for the episode and probly would have cost too much money.
But yeah. It was ashame that it was like that

I dunno. I notice such a thing too. I know the Defiant uses ablative armor, perhaps the dominion uses a similar technology.

Maybe but it was the same with the federation, klingon, cardassian and breen ships. They all seemed the same. lol.

I think maybe their shields are simply integrated into the ship now, just above the hull or something. Could explain it.

The shields should always be like that anyway. Shields should be usually about just under 10 meters of the ships hull but what we always she on startrek when shield are being hit is the shields are set to a shield bubble which puts the shields further away from the hull and makes them weaker. But they are always shown like that. Oh well

I suppose it wouldn't have been as impressive a battle scene , when the ships charged at each other, they all had their shields up and survived. Makes it visually more impressive to have them all exploding I guess.

You answered your own question. This was the early episodes. Graphics sucked ass then. You can just explain it as they had hull shields. Like instead of a bubble it hugged the hull. Later on technology advanced and they were able to expand it to reduce damage to the hull.

I watched "Call to Arms" the other day which is from the end of season five, and I'm pretty sure you don't see shield bubbles in that either... When the station is being fired on you just see the damage, but then when a Jem'Hadar ship crashes into it, you see it break up on DS9's shields.

Call to Arms and most of the big Dominion battles are best to watch. So watch those, and youll see.

I always thought it was just because the Dominion ships were more advanced and extremely powerful. Shields meant nothing to them, thats why only three or four Dominion ships could take on nine or ten Federation ships.
