First title since 1918 is biggest headline of 2004

The honors continue to role in for the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. The team that turned history inside out has been selected as the top sports story of 2004 by The Associated Press.
Aside from winning their first championship since 1918 by sweeping the Cardinals in four games, the Red Sox became the first team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit. And the fact the amazing comeback came against the Yankees made it an all the more dramatic story.
In November, the Red Sox were recognized by Sports Illustrated as the magazine's Sportsmen of the Year.
It's no surprise that the Red Sox continue to be recognized for their magical ride. The degree of difficulty in staving off elimination also makes it a story that will be hard to duplicate. Consider that the Red Sox were three outs away from being swept in the ALCS.
Trailing by a run against the great Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Kevin Millar drew a critical, leadoff walk. Dave Roberts then stole the biggest base in the history of the Red Sox, setting up Bill Mueller for a game-tying, RBI single.
In the bottom of the 12th inning, David Ortiz prolonged the season by at least one more day, rifling a two-run homer into the visitors bullpen.
The next day, the Sox again came back against the Yankees, as Jason Varitek's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning tied the game. Another marathon ended with an Ortiz swing, as the big DH -- aka "Big Papi" -- this time looped a base hit into center field, scoring Johnny Damon in the bottom of the 14th and sending the ALCS back to New York for Game 6.
Once back in the Bronx, the Red Sox rode Curt Schilling's gimpy ankle to a 4-2 victory in Game 6 and then blew the Yankees out by a score of 10-3 in Game 7.
The World Series didn't have the same drama, but plenty of dominance. The Sox never trailed against the Cardinals, putting together a wire-to-wire clinic and bringing the trophy home with a 3-0 victory in Game 4.
It has been a special winter on Yawkey Way and beyond, as the Red Sox have taken their trophy all across New England and beyond.
"You validated people's faith and you taught them that 'Keep the Faith' is more than a slogan. It's a valid, life attitude," said Charles Steinberg, executive vice president/public affairs for the Red Sox.
Meanwhile, the crowning moment has not slowed the Sox down in pursuit of another title. General manager Theo Epstein recently re-signed Jason Varitek and made him the team captain. Edgar Renteria, David Wells, Matt Clement and Wade Miller have also been added to the strong core, which includes Johnny Damon, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, Keith Foulke and Trot Nixon.
"There is a sense that we got the job done this year and it was so satisfying for everybody, all the players and management, all the fans, that, if anything, it just kind of increases your hunger and desire to do it again. So it's good motivation for us," said Epstein. "When you're coming off an October like we just had, if anything it reminds you that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow sometimes that makes it all worthwhile."
