Fri Dec 17, 2004 8:09 pm 10 Million Bees on the Freeway |
|
Quote: | (Dec. 16) -- Millions of bees were dumped into the Spaghetti Bowl area following a truck spilling its load on Wednesday. The bees are now dead and the cleanup continues.
Millions of bees swarmed one of the valley's busiest highway interchanges on Wednesday afternoon. The bees were traveling on a truck from Utah. They were headed to California to be used for pollinating almond trees.
NHP believes the driver lost control of the truck and hit a wall causing the load to be dumped on the ground below. "Sending colonies across to a landing about 40 feet below is total devastation for the colony of bees," said Don Grogan, bee handler.
The honey bees did not pose an immediate danger and remained docile. However, they had to be destroyed because many of the queen bees were killed causing disruption to the colonies. The bees were doused with water to kill them.
