Labour pulls further ahead in poll
Sun 28 November, 2004 07:21
LONDON (Reuters) - Tony Blair's government is pulling further ahead of the Conservative party, with just six months to go before an expected election, according to a newspaper poll.
The Independent on Sunday poll put the Labour Party on 42 percent against Michael Howard's Conservatives on 31 percent, the widest margin, it said, since May 2003.
The Conservatives are now trailing Labour by a bigger margin than at their landslide election defeat under former leader William Hague in 2001, it added.
The 1,033 people who took part in the poll rated smaller main opposition party the anti-war Liberal Democrats as a more effective opposition to Labour than the Conservatives.
The poll was carried out by CommunicateResearch on November 24 and 25.

New Labour = Old Tory In fact, the Tories have a couple of policies I agree with right now- paying mothers for the full time job they do (Labour just want to make sure mothers never see their kids) and they're also very weary about joining the Euro. I don't agree with much else though.
David Blunkett's ID cards idea is just going to take away more of our civil rights, which the Civil Contingencies Bill has already attacked.

Aww come on, don't be greedy. You can't vote for someone because they are targeting your needs. I think taking into account the future of the entire nation is something we all have to do when voting.

I wish we could change the three-party system we have now (two-party if you exclude the Liberal Democrats). It's not working, the parties appear to be the same.
I'd rather vote for an independent who genuinely cares about his/her community. The local independent I vote for is a good man and campaigns all year round on important issues and has made changes for the better. Perhaps we should all vote for independents who genuinely want to change things, rather than those who are affiliated with a particular party.
Oh, and I am aware that there are bad independents around too.

The trouble with the current UK government is that Labour has a massive majority in the House of Commons. Instead of democracy we have a sort of elective dictatorship. Not only can Labour do what ever it wants, but Blair can even put through things that a large part of his party don't want (- like top-up fees). Bring back John Major I say - with a majority of only 21 he couldn't behave with the arrogance of Labour/Blair.

That is one of the results of First Past the Post system we have here, it usually results in large majority wins for one of the two main parties. The problem is that if there is a really small majority like there was with John Major there was some things the Conservatives wanted to do but couldn't because of the small majority they got.

That was meant to read that you can't vote for a party solely based on the fact that they are targeting your needs. You have to look at the bigger picture: who will be the best at leading the country/improving the economy/protecting the environment. You can't just vote for someone because they'll give you a tax cut. Well, you can, but you shouldn't.
