PostMon Nov 22, 2004 10:27 pm    "JFK Reloaded"

I did a surprising thing today. I watched The National (or actually, am watching). There's nothing good on TV . . .

Anyway, I heard about a Scottish company's release of "JFK Reloaded", an online video game where you must compete to assassinate Kennedy. The company says it is meant to educate people about the assassination, and to reveal how difficult it was to execute and "dispel any conspiracy theories". However, a lot of people think it is atrocious and appalling, especially because it is released on the 41st anniversary of JFK's death.

Thats sick. So is this game. There are better alternatives to teaching history than this.

I'm not really for this game, and I wouldn't play it. But could someone tell me the difference between this game and any world war two game (or any other war simulation) out there?

Is there a difference?

I knew someone would defend this game. Someone against Bush too.....

Its different because the sole purpose of this game is to reanact a sick thing. You'll say whats the difference between this and Hitman where you kill World leaders or blah blah blah.
The difference is your killing made up people.

How are you comparing WW2 games to this?

Killing people is a sick any time it happens. I agree that the game is sick but not so much more than any other first person shoot 'em up. I play them but the point Kyre is making is that in both you go round killing people, so in some ways it doesn't matter if it's a nameless soldier or a president. And a lot of the first person shoot 'em ups have bits based on real life people.

Also there was no reason really to bring politics into it (not being a mod there, just personal opinion), and Kyre isn't anti-Bush in some ways. I've noticed him making points for Bush and against him. He just points out the flaws in any argument, IMO anyway.

So you're saying you actually read my post, even though you came up with such a ridiculous response? I mentioned that I would not play this game, but maybe you skimmed over that part.

Lets compare this to WW2 games then. In this game you kill JFK, in WW2 games you kill soldiers. Now, they don't have names, or if they do they are fake names, but the meaning is there. You are having fun by killing a certain person(s).

So, I ask you again, what is the difference? And make sure you read all of the post this time.

Again the difference is it isn't based off of a senseless murder. WW2 based stuff is just games where you run around killing nameless soldiers(As you said yourself). It does matter if the person is nameless or not. It makes all the difference. Based on real life battles but not a game where the sole purpose is to murder the person without justification.

Really? I'll take your word for it that he isn't anti-Bush because EVERY post he makes about him reflects that he is. I agree about not bringing politics into this. So i'll drop it.

Of course I'm anti-Bush, but it doesn't have anything to do with this topic. This is a debate about a computer game, so bear that in mind.

I didn't see a decent answer in your post, so I guess you're too lazy, or perhaps you don't really mean what you say if you're not willing to defend your viewpoint any further than you already have.

Or maybe I am indeed a hypocrite.

I personally don't see the difference between this, or any WW2 game, etc. There's a Vietnam one out now, too. I think that's disgusting. I mean, the soldiers who were there had to shoot children who had guns, as the children would have killed them first. Is that in the game? Don't think so. A staggering number of the soldiers that came back from that war comitted suicide, too. It's rather sick to gloss over real life events like war or assasinations where hundreds of thousands or even millions died, to make any kind of profit.

I saw this on the news. The had an interview with the maker and he said that it was supposed to be EDUCATIONAL!!! What's so educational about recreating the assasination of a US President. I also heard that there was supposed to be a money reward for whoever could recreate the assasination the best. Sigh...

I can understand that it could be educational from the point of view that you learn how difficult it was to complete the assassination, and the finer points of the incident.

I agree that whatever "educational value" brought about by this game is not enough to redeem it for its unseeminglyness.

It isn't different from WWx games. You might be killing nameless soldiers instead of named presidents, but you're still killing people for sport

What if it were a game where bin Laden was the target, and you got to kill him?

I'm a firm beleiver that J.F.K. was killed by a man named Mitch Wallace. Won't get into that though.

This game is disgusting. Alienating a U.S. President's death is not a good thing. They're taking an ico of history, and using him as a play toy, to re-enact his death for ENTERTAINMENT?

This is EVIL. EVIL. You do NOT make a game about the assassignation of a former President! It's just evil!
