PostTue Nov 16, 2004 4:35 pm    Christmas Tales

I love Christmas.

And I also love Christmas movies, books and comics with a Christmas theme. Let's share our favourites here.

With regards to films, I must recommend Santa Claus: The Movie from 1985, directed by Jeannot Szwarc (one of my favourites) and produced by The Salkinds. The film is slightly dated now but it's still a fun tale which really brings home to you the spirit of Christmas.

Coming soon to theaters is The Polar Express, directed by Robert Zemeckis, No. #1 on my Top Ten Directors List. Read about the movie at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338348/. It should be fun, I hope it is.

In my youth, I loved comics. I simply must recommend two tales to those who love Christmas (both from the Batman comics).

Batman #239 (1972). In this issue is a story entitled "Silent Night, Deadly Night". No supervillains or mad scientists, just a story about Christmas. Without giving too much away, Batman comes across a mugger who has been ripping off Santa Claus's across town. But Batman soon learns things are not black and white...

Batman #309 (1979) is another great tale featuring Batman and his enemy The Blockbuster, a childlike brute who wasn't a villain in the truest sense of the word. A young lady attempts to commit suicide by taking an overdose. Both Batman and The Blockbuster attempt to save her.

I first read these comics twenty years ago and they have stayed with me since. Pure, magical Christmas tales. If you can find these back issues in a store, PLEASE read them. I re-read them every Christmas.

And finally, don't forget the following movies:

Miracle on 34th Street (Original and 1994 version)
A Christmas Carol (ANY version)
It's a Wonderful Life

Oh, and don't forget to listen to the following songs:

White Christmas (Bing Crosby)
Let It Snow (Dean Martin)
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (Jane McDonald)
Cliff Richard (Mistletoe and Wine)
Walking in the Air (Aled Jones)
A Spaceman Came Travelling (Chris de Burgh)

And many more songs...

Any Christmas movies/comics/books/songs you want to recommend, folks?

Think I saw that many, many years ago. Was it a late 80's special, around 1988?

Oh yes, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Saw that at the cinema in 1994-twice.

A big thumbs-up to your other choices too. Gosh, Christmas feels closer than ever now!

But it's now November 17th.

Tick Tock, Tick Tock.

I think the hype for Christmas should start on either the 30th November/1st December.

We had some out in October... I get annoyed by it, because it gets me into the christmas spirit way too early and then I have to wait about 3 months before christmas even comes! I better start getting christmas presents soon!

I really don't like Christmas. But I do like the Grinch, the one with Jim Carey.

Scrooged, starring Bill Murray, is one of my favourite movies. For those that haven't seen it, it's A Christmas Carol for the modern age, Scrooge is some sort of TV executive. Look out for it.
