Right-wing moralists launch censor war

Americas freedom of speech is under attack. Mickey Mouse and Private Ryan had better watch out, says Ros Davidson in Los Angeles

WHAT do Tom Hanks, sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, U2s Bono, Janet Jacksons boobs and Mickey Mouse have in common? Theyre all targets in an attack on American popular culture, which is accelerating following George Bushs re-election.

E-mail complaints from angry right-wing viewers are flooding federal regulators this weekend following the unedited broadcast on Remembrance Day of the film Saving Private Ryan.

In fact, one third of the local TV stations affiliated with national network ABC, owned by Disney, refused to air the critically acclaimed second world war blockbuster because it contains swear words. The Oscar-winning film about D-Day, directed by Steven Spielberg, also includes graphic, realistic violence.

The 66 stations, from Boston to Detroit and Honolulu, said they feared sanctions from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for airing profanity during prime evening hours. That was despite the fact that ABC had promised to cover any fine by the commission, whose members are appointed by its president.

ABC crossed the line by airing at least 20 f words and 12 s words during prime-time viewing hours!, says the evangelical group American Family Association, which claims it has 2.3 million members and is one of the groups leading the revamped charge against immorality. We believe ABC should have aired their salute to heroes without violating broadcast decency laws, it said.

Each TV station could face a fine of 18,000 if found to have aired indecent material. Under long-standing guide lines, profanity is banned from 6am to 10pm on Americas publicly owned broadcast channels, but not on cable channels.

It would clearly have been our preference to run the movie, says Ray Cole, president of Citadel Communications, which owns three of the stations. We think it is a patriotic, artistic tribute to our fighting forces.

Senator John McCain, a one-time POW in Vietnam, introduced Saving Private Ryan on Thursday. A maverick Republican and a former presidential candidate, he spent much of Thursday trying to stem the desertions. The film is nowhere near indecent, he says angrily.

Initially, only 20 stations were expected to opt out. The 1998 movie has been shown twice before on ABC, to some complaints from viewers but without TV stations baling.

Previously, regulators have permitted some programmes with swearing to be aired when the language is justified artistically by the context. According to an agreement between Spielberg and the television network ABC, the film could not be edited for artistic reasons.

Thursdays widespread reaction worries cultural observers because of Americas constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and because ownership of TV and radio outlets has become dramatically consolidated in recent years.

Its self-censorship, says BJ Bullert, a communications scholar at the University of Washington. Theres a climate of intimidation, especially in response to the election. Its a new kind of cold war, and it comes from the top, from George Bush and Karl Rove.

The national mood is different now, and not just because of the election results. Moral values were cited by 22% of Americans as the top issue in the November 2 vote, according to pollsters.

In September, regulators fined CBS 299,000 for the live broadcast in January in which singer Janet Jacksons breast was bared briefly during half-time at the Super Bowl . Jacksons wardrobe malfunction prompted accusations of immorality from conservative activists, some viewers, members of Congress and commentators.

Rove, Bushs top political adviser, says: I think people are concerned about the coarseness of our culture, about what they see on TV and in movies.

Former Richard Nixon speechwriter William Safire, a columnist with The New York Times, describes it as the social political event of the past year. Conservative Christian groups, including the American Family Association, are also rallying against the new film Kinsey, released this weekend to critical acclaim, and starring Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.

The ideas in the film, directed by Oscar-winner Bill Condon who also made Gods And Monsters, promote pre-marital sex, which leads to abortion and Aids, claims the group Catholic Exchange.

Kinsey is a gripping and brutally honest, uncompromising and non-judgemental look at the controversial university researcher who revolutionised cultural attitudes towards sex in the 1940s and 1950s, said a CNN reviewer.

Robert Knight, of the curiously named Concerned Women for America, told Associated Press recently that Kinsey was akin to the notorious Nazi pseudo- scientist Dr Josef Mengele.

Knight backtracked on the comparison on Friday, but his reaction indicates the seriousness of Americas culture wars.

The American Family Association also calls for a general boycott of Disney, because the company has encouraged gays to visit its theme parks, and of food giant Procter & Gamble for hiring gays.

Two months after the Janet Jackson incident, which also involved singer Justin Timberlake, NBC ran up against the FCC. Rock star Bono, from the band U2, said f*** during the live broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards.

Recalled less often, say critics of the culture wars, is the record fine of 652,000 for Rupert Murdochs Fox network for the heterosexual reality programme, Married By America. At issue were prime-time scenes in which party-goers lick whipped cream from strippers bodies and two female strippers spanked a man on all fours wearing only his underwear, said the commission complaint.

The silence over Foxs fine, from those who tout moral values, is hypocritical, says a column by Frank Rich in todays New York Times. Fox News has become controversial for its right-wing commentary and popularity in red or pro-Bush America.

Another indication of the red culture scare is the action of one of the USs newly elected politicians, Tom Coburn, a senator from Oklahoma, says Rich. As a state-elected politician, he attacked NBC in 1997 for encouraging irresponsible sexual behaviour and for taking network TV to an all-time low with full-frontal nudity, violence and profanity. His anger was prompted by the prime-time airing of another Spielberg film, Schindlers List, about the Holocaust.

A quite fascinating article.

Oh come on . . .

Although I recognize the need for censorship, as a writer I tend to prefer it as loose as possible.

Most TV stations (if not all, I think it's a law but not sure on that . . . ) warn you at the beginning of a program what rating it has, some stations do it at the end of each commercial break too. If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it. It's not like the TV stations are forcing you to watch uncensored movies.

Unlike, for example, the Super Bowl incident. No one was expecting that unseemly incident, therefore CBS' failure to anticipate such an occurrence is reasonable justification for the fine.

In my opinion, the most repressed minority in the world is the individual.

Enough said. I can elaborate if people wish.

Bah. Just move to Canada where censors are optional. (well, not really)

The radio station I listen to will sometimes turn off it's censor as early as 7:30pm if it wants to.

Our TV stations dont play things with swearing or nudity during the day, but once around 7-8 pm hits, they give you a warning and will play whatever. Frankley, I think that's perfectly fine. I mean jesus, you dont need to censor movies and boycott companies for a few swear words and some nudity. It's part of life, get over it.

Alright, this is a big debate topic. Here's what I think:
This man has gone too far. Yes, we need censoring of nudity and of bad words, and yes companies should watch out more, but completely blocking out freedom of speech, that's TOO FAR.
I agree with you on the Super Bowl incident, but here's something that you have to consider: Many people turn on their TVs AFTER the show starts. What then? They're unaware about the situation. And what about those kids that may see this? It's not like the parent can watch him/her all the time, or can afford one of those technologies that censors innapropriate things. And what about when the kid's home alone? What then? BET is a horrible network, showing the gangsta rap music to horrible levels, with all these music videos, etc. Other channels are horrible, as well. A certain standard must be kept, primarily for the safety of children, but not infringing freedom of speech too far.

Now, that is disgusting, I'll say that, but at least the people are WARNED about Gay Day, however those that aren't and go (I've heard first-hand accounts about this, with their little kids) are open to attack, and that's not right. But boycott disney? No.

Now that's just wrong, on all fronts. We NEED full-fledged censors for what are censored ALL THE TIME. If I wasn't responsable, like many people are not responsable, and I had a TV in my room (which I've had since I was 7, and got cable when 10) and I saw such stuff...wrong. Same with radio.
It is NOT right for kids to hear or see horrible things. That's where the culture war is, very much. But ultimately, the buck stops with the business. If they want to do horrible things, then fine. Just censor the necessary things. Showing nudity uncensored--NO! Think about the kids. Think about the kids.

RM. Jesus. You have the most... ARG! There isn't even a word for your opinion that I can think of!

I quite enjoy the way the censors are right now. There is no culture war, beside the fact that religious people hate the swearing and nudity. Wow, Gangsta rap RM.... It's a form of music that many people enjoy. How would you like it if your music was censored from the air just because a group of radicals hate it? And wow, there's sex on TV late at night. It's a biological function that most people take part in. It is essential for reproduction. Before clothes were invented, kids saw naked people all the time.

I hate censors. Sure, they should be enacted to a certain extent so that young children dont hear words or see sex on TV, but full fledged all the time? You're border-line paranoid. Much of the music I listen to has foul language. I dont listen to it for the foul language, but for the music, and the meaning of the lyrics and how much I enjoy the rhythme and such. I should be denied to hear it because you think we are at war with music and TV shows? Wake up, open your eyes, ears and mind and realize it isn't the 1800's anymore.

A lot of TV stations air them after each commercial break. Random channel flipping may be a problem, yes, but completely censoring shows because of that would be overkill.

A lot of services offer parental controls of some type these days.

It would happen the same if a child is home with a parent. My mom and dad let me watch R rated movies when I was a kid. Not indiscriminately, of course, but depending on the subject matter. The ratings aren't for the children, they're used as a guideline for adults. We might as well censor all music, since a child could be at a park and a teenager could walk by with some dirty rap music playing out of their headphones.

If they do badly on the H2G2 movie I will boycott them for the rest of my life.

Im with that 100%. The FCC is way too anal as it is, and theyre just plain stupid. Like on TV we can say "ass", "bitch", and "*beep*", but we cant say "*beep*" or "*beep*." Its so dumb! (Yah, you cant see half of those. Oh well!

It's my opinion that our culture is exposed to WAY too much sex. So many of the morality police complain about violence and language, whilest it is Sex which actually corrupts the mind.

Oh my gosh! There's just know way to reason with you people...Why don't we just forget morals? Who gives a damn! Allow gays to have sex in parks! Allow kids to be exposed to the F-word all day! Allow kids to see sex and a naked woman and a naked man! Allow kids to watch music videos and listen to music that promotes the beating of women, using drugs, and promotes violence! Just allow it! Do NOT bleep out any words. Forget about the kids. Let the 4 year olds discover sex. Let's just allow Playboy on regular cable.
And somewhat off the subject of censorship but still on morals, allow abortions--including partial-birth abortions. Allow gay marriage. Allow full stem-cell research. Let the death penalty run rampent. Allow prostitution. Legalize marijuana. Have kids put on condomns in health class and be sexually abused word-wised by a teacher that says, "Come on sweety." (Yes, it's happened.)
Let's just expose kids to what they shouldn't be exposed to! Let's become immoral or ammoral! Yes, lets! Forget about morals. Who needs them? Forget about protecting the kids. It's not necessary!

I was on the subject of morals as well, so I said "And somewhat off the subject of censorship but still on morals." But about seeing a nude man or woman, that's NOT RIGHT! I don't care what those over 18 do, but WATCH OUT FOR THE KIDS, man!

It's the parents job what the kid sees if they are under 18 there is a thing called a V-Chip. I don't want my pleasures taken away because some parents are too lazy to view what their kid watches. Its not all of americas job to moderate what is on TV thats the parents job.

There's something called a price. And there's something called affordability. Ever heard of it? Many familys, especially the inner-city families, which are most exposed, cannot afford the V-Chip. It's not right for kids to be exposed to such things. But then again, who gives a damn about morals? Who needs 'em?

--EDIT--
And I'll admit that the parents have a great responsability, but what if they're not there? And what if they are negligent parents. That's just not right.

Oh no, they don't. And either way, we HAVE TO KEEP MORAL STANDARDS. Plus, it wouldn't be too hard to disable them.
And you're sense of humor...Sense of humor, Bah!...is nothing more than DISGUSTING! Get some religion in your life, and maybe you'll see SOME MORALS. (No, I'm not saying the every individual has to have religion, but sometimes, it's needed) But whatever. Let's just forget about morals. Let's kill everybody, while we're at it. Let's help Osama.

(No, I'm not saying the every individual has to have religion, but sometimes, it's needed) But whatever. Let's just forget about morals. Let's kill everybody, while we're at it. Let's help Osama.

But apparently the possibility of 5 year olds seeing a man and a woman naked and/or having sex. Or maybe a woman and a woman? What about a man and a man? What about parts being in plain view? What about kids hearing brutal things. There's no V-chip on the radio, too. And I'm sure that it costs more for a V-chip. I'm sure of it. But what about those people that have older cables? And sure, Satalites and Digital Cable has securities, but I'm talking REGULAR cable. THAT costs extra.
