Spaceballs 2

Anyone seen the 1987 movie Spaceballs? To cut a long story short, it's a spoof of Star Wars but also spoofs movies such as Alien and Planet of the Apes. It was directed by the great Mel Brooks.

Amongst others, Bill Pullman plays Lone Starr, a cross between Luke Skywalker and Han Solo (with a dollop of Indiana Jones thrown in). Rick Moranis plays Dark Helmet, obviously a spoof of Darth Vader.

Oh, there's a young warrior called Yoghurt (played by Mel Brooks), a villan called Pizza the Hutt and a mysterious form of energy called The Schwarz (much greater than The Force).

I think you get the picture. The movie is extremely funny and one I would recommend.

Anyway, it appears that there is going to be a sequel. Not too sure if we need one and sequels aren't always good but I'm willing to give it a chance. I doubt it'll top the original, though.

Anyone else seen the original?

I've literally been watching Spaceballs since I was 4 years old. It's a film I've loved my entire life and that I thoroughly enjoy. My favorite character in the film I must admit has always been Colonel Sandurz, he's just such a dork and some of his facial expression are great. The only character I think was a waste was Dot Matrix, I never liked her much. I think my favorite line in the entire movie came not from a main character, but an insignificant minor character. In the cafe near the end, when the guy from Alien is getting those stomac pain, a woman says "Can we get him some water!?" and another character yells out the line "Water my ass, get this guy some Pepto-Bismol!!", golden. Other favorite lines include "What's the matter Colonel Sandurz, CHICKEN!?", "This ship is too long, if I walked, the movie would be over", and the part where the guy from Police Academy says that he's "lost the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps", followed by an explanation of the sounds, and Dark Helmet says to Sandurz "That's not all he's lost". This film is a real gem and I'm eternally happy that Mel brooks is doing a sequel to it, finally after all these years. I'm also quite fond of Robin Hood: Men In Tights, and Blazing Saddles. Didn't like History of The World Part I and I haven't seen Young Frankenstein though. Mr. Brooks is truely a comedic genius.

You've brought back some memories with those lines. I just love the self-destruct scene at the end, where the hell did all those freaks and that bear come from?

HELMET: "Ah buckle-this! Ludicrous Speed, GO!"

In my entire life I've only met one person who didn't find this film to be an absolute riot. The self-destruct part is great
COMPUTER: "10, 9, 8, 6"
SKROOB: "Six? What happend to seven!?"
COMPUTER: "Just kidding..."

Another one I like is where Lone Starr tries to use the Vulcan neckpinch on that guard
GUARD: "What the hell are you doing?"
LONE STARR: "The... Vulcan neck pinch?"
GUARD: "Nah nah stupid, you've got it way too high it's down here where the shoulder meets the neck"
*Lone Starr tries again*
LONE STARR: "Like, THIS?"
GUARD: "Yeahhh!"
*Guard falls to the ground unconcious*

Great, great dialogue.

Remember when Dark Helmet went to battle Lone Starr and he said something like, "I am your cousins former roommate" or something like that.

So many great moments. I really should dig out the VHS. I haven't brought the DVD yet because it's a "vanilla release".

I used to own the DVD, what do you mean by "Vanilla Release"?

"Vanilla Release" is a term for DVD's that have little or no extras, usually DVD's that contain only scene selection and interactive menu. I don't think there is a Spaceballs DVD with extras...yet!

Ah yes, the only special features on the DVD are a "making of" documentary that was filmed in the 80's an thus is extremely cheesy, a trailer, and a rather bland, but slightly informative commentary track by Mel Brooks.

Based on the quality of Mel Brooks movies, I'm going to have to agree with Siege on this one.

There's no way he can pull off a major movie spoof of his usual caliber in only 7 months and a few weeks.

My guess is it will be a prequel to parody the recent Star Wars films. But as long as Rick Morranis returns as Lord Helmet, I'll be happy no matter what it's about.
