Sun Nov 07, 2004 4:58 pm Election Protestor Kills Himself at Ground Zero |
|
Quote: | NEW YORK (AP) - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush's re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.
Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.
Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.
``I'm absolutely sure it's a protest,'' Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. ``I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic.''
Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority. |

I wish people didn't feel the need to make such dramatic statement. Poor man, it sounds like he had a lot to live for.

If someone was so into politics that he would kill him self just to make a point, they should really rethink there entire life. I would never on any circumstance kill my self to prove a point (unless it was for Christianity). If a person was that much involved and disliked Bush that much they should change counties or take a less severe act. Perhaps the man had some hidden past with George Bush, Other than that anyone to commit suicide over a presidential election is just mentally unstable and morally insane.

Yes, but guess what? It'll be 4 years for all these anti-Bush people to leave for Canada.

Best news I heard all day. Go away and don't come back. I hate people who say they are leaving because Bush won. Your only giving us what we want. I'd be glad to see you go. You won't be missed.
On topic. This was really sad. I don't mean his death but what he tried to do. "Im going to kill myself and change absolutely nothing..." Did he think his death would make Bush leave office? That it would get him impeached? Now he will be forgotten in a few months and for what? All he accomplished was hurting those that loved him.

He probably thought that he could send a message that Bush is so bad, people are willing to kill themselves, as stupid and absurd as that really sounds.

If Bush continues the way he did the last four years, it may very well be the end of the world.
But OK, it's sad people kill themselves for this. I mean, I don't agree with his re-election either, but so be it. Killing yourself wouldn't change a thing.

Exactly. Suicide isn't the solotiun. Maybe for this man, but not for the world.

That's horrible, but he should've moved to another country or tried to make a difference. He may of convinced what like 15 people tops that Bush was bad, he definatley should of made his voice be heard.
Also, this is what makes this nation seperate, it was a fair election and the country should recognize Bush as there leader, at least for four years.
