PostMon Nov 01, 2004 9:06 am    Compensation Culture

What do you all think of the compensation culture which pervades modern life?

First off, the world isn't black and white. There will be times when it is right to compensate people. Other times, there can be no justification.

If someone is injured through employer negligience, then I agree with that person sueing for loss of earnings and medical bills. Compensation is right there.

But sometimes, it is crazy. Such as employees suing an employer for thousands (tens of thousands, even) because they had an argument or because they took offence to something that has been said.

At the end of the day, it is YOU and I who pay for this, through higher taxes and higher insurance premiums.

Compensation should have it's limits. It should be there to provide a safety net for people who are injured through no fault of their own or people who can't provide for themselves.

It shouldn't, IMO, be a free-for-all for any chancer to claim tens of thousands, for spurious reasons.

Any thoughts on this, folks?

If you clear all that up you are saying that some people who are injured shouldn't get help...?

Does people really sue thier employers for tens of thousands just because of an argument? If so then that argument must be a bad ass argument!
And if an employer harrased someone then of course that someone should get money for it. And yes I'm willing to pay for it! I mean what if that were to happen to me...

Yeah, if you're injured, you should probably be compensated. But compensating for saying "You lazy donkey" to your never-working employee? Bad. Bad. Bad. Entirely American idiotness.

I'll give one example...

Awhile back, a female police officer found a rude postcard on her desk, which she said caused her offence. She sued and had tens of thousands given to her, all because this postcard 'offended' her. Weird or what?

There was also a case awhile back where a firefighter and his union sued because the burning building they went into was too dangerous. Er, excuse me, but aren't all burning buildings dangerous? Is every fireman going to sue his department?

In a nutshell, compensation should ONLY be for those who have lost money or been denied earnings/wages because of someone else. Or if, for example, someone's car is hit by a bad driver. Anything else, I don't see why the taxpayer should fork out for it.

I think at least those firefighters should get money! I mean all houses are dangerouse, yes. But not "to dangerous". They probably could have got killed. Firefighters don't enter a house if it's to dangerouse and there's a great chanse that they will get killed!

And that police officer... well I don't know what that post card said, but imadigen yourself in her situation... to get a personal "hate massage" or whatever it was. Police officers are probably trained to handel things like that, but when it gets personal then it isn't as easy to hold it back as if someone calls you names because your a policeman...

Just because you're a policeman doesn't mean that someone has the right to offend you! She probably deservs those money. At least that's my oppinion

Well, I guess NO-ONE should receive tens of thousands because they found a postcard offensive. And firefighters know that they face danger on every call, they shouldn't receive compensation unless through employer negligience.

Damn, I hate disagreeing with my favourite people.

Okay, if it's fifty, maybe a hundred dollar (pounds?) she gets, but really, ten thousand bugs? It's nonsense. And the firefighters, if the house was that dangerous, why did they enter it? I say: Think before you act. Pft.

^ Yes. There's this little thing called personal responsibility which some people seem to have forgotten about.

LOL! I loooove it (see I disagree on everything )

And the firefighters! I don't wanna die just because i'm a firefighter! I wan't to save people, but I wouldn't want to die! And i'm not sure but I don't think it's easy to se if it's dangerouse to enter a house that's on fire. I think they have like one "head firefighter" that say what the others should do... I don't know. But beeing a firefighter isn't as dangerous as I think you think They won't enter if the risk of dieing is to great!
ok. I guess I'm done arguing...

And to wrap everything up...
I would pay more in taxes so that people in general can get a better life
YAY for taxes!

^I think you are the only person in history who has said that.

On a serious note, I'd be happy to pay more taxes if I thought it was going to policemen, doctors, nurses, hospitals. Sadly, governments-ALL governments-do nothing but waste taxes!

I love this sue everyone attitude. Some of the adverts are hilarious (I fell off the wrong ladder ). I'm making it my life aim to be on Claims Direct - "I got 10,000 for falling over an uneven slab on the pavement". Can't wait

There's one advert which I love (UK only). A man explains that he won money for falling of the wrong ladder, maybe it's the same one 1/1. The thing is, he was on it himself! You're supposed to have someone at the bottom holding the thing, idiot!

^And that's my point. The concept of personal responsibility is gone.

In 1998, I had an accident at work. I sprained my ankle and tore ligaments whilst coming down the stairs. Queues of vultures lined up, urging me to sue.

One, it was an accident. They do happen. And two, I was sprinting down the stairs after finishing lunch. If I had walked slower, I may not have fell. But, even if I had walked carefully, I may have fell. Accidents do happen and I don't see why we should all pay higher insurance premiums and taxes because people want something for nothing.

I do want to stress that I do support compensation in some cases. Hypothetically speaking, let's say that an employer sends one of his men out in a van that he knows is not roadworthy and should be repaired. Let's say the man crashes and is off work for weeks. In that case, I think compensation is justified, to cover loss of earnings and medical bills.

But that is not the way it works now. A lot of people seem to just want money for nothing. Hence, the reason why we all seem to be paying higher insurance premiums.

^No one gets money for nothing. At least they're not supposed to get money for nothing. But we all know that isn't right. Everyone cheats! And it's not possible to know you is cheating and who isn't. So you must give people the benefit of the doubt. I mean what if we were to do all that and then a person who really do need help don't get it...

We can't be so selfish people, that includes not cheating...
