...82% approval rating of Bush among the troops, lost less than 2,000 personel over the course of the war...where are we losing them in Iraq? We lost something like 5,000 a year in Vietnam. (Or was it Korea? I always mix those up...) We're not doing so bad. Not that losing anyone is a good thing. But it's not nearly as bad as most wars throughout history.

We lost 2000 in ONE DAY during the Civil War, but yeah.

"We"? Who's "we"? The Civil War was a civil war. Besides, that was way too long ago to let it *cough* 'cloud you judgement.'
What you're effectively saying here (ie in this topic, not just that post) is that you're parano�d and you're like "We're gonna need enough military to take over the entire planet, and we should keep our nukes, they might come in handy when we're at war with Proxima Centauri and want to destroy the sun." Come on, think about it, what the hell do you need this much military for?

If you're talking about Kerry pushing for a Nuclear Freeze during the Cold War, then the answer is: We would have LOST the war!
Now, though, we need a couple just in case we are attacked by a nation like Iran or North Korea with them.

They are not a deterent against countries like those though, as the dictators in them (at least N. Korea) are absolute nutters who would probably use them if they had the means of firing them at America. Sorry, my post before was for these days, which is why I said the current world climate, rather thn in the cold war. I wonder what would have happened if America or the USSR had lost the cold war by disarming though, instead of the USSR collapsing?
