PostWed Sep 29, 2004 8:55 pm    WPA

I was wondering if presently there is an equivalent of the WPA (and the like) or if the WPA is still around. (WPA is the Works Progress Administration the FDR started for people to get back into the working society during the Great Depression). Because today in my social issues class, we watch this documentary on these four women who were trying to get along after Clinton's welfare reform in 1996 and it just made me really mad that there's so many people out there who are suffering like that, you know, having to give up their kids and basically their whole lives. I mean, these are people who never graduated from high school and you're thinking... ok, well, you should have gone to high school, it's your own fault, but then you realize that they never really knew any better because they were born from a family that never taught them the value of an education. It makes me mad that there's really nothing we can do about all those people, here in our own country, who are living in such deep poverty.

So does anyone know? WPA? eh?

I have no idea about that WPA you're talking about. What does WPA do anyway... (or maybe I should say did?)

And I agree, it's sad that they didn't went throw high school just because their parants didn't think they were worth it! That make's me angry. That's why education should be free!!! I mean paying just to go to school! The whole society gains if everyone goes to school!
Here education is free. God bless... sweden...
(why do god only bless america? I mean everyone say god bless america, I never heard anyone say sweden ok whatever )

You don't have to pay to go to school in America... I don't think,

Triam didn't say anything about their parents not paying for them to go to school, just that they weren't encouraged to, and thought it was okay to skip it, or something, I think. Anywho, that is sad, but I know nothing about the WPA.

Well, college is free here if you go there right after school, if that helps, You can also stay on longer at school for free if you get 5 passes in the exams you take at 15/16 (which is easy if you want to do it). And there are special student loans for people who want to go to university. You only have to pay them back once you earn over a certain amount of money, and they just take it out of your pay automatically until it's paid off, so that's kind of cool... If you never earn that much money, you never have to pay it back.

anyway, like I said, the WPA was a "by the people, for the people" group... the Worls Progress Administration. When the Great Depression hit the US, nearly everyone was poor and out of work. FDR started up the WPA, along with other things like it (PWA, CCC) to get everyone back into the workforce. The WPA built dams, schools, bridges. Just anything that society needed and gave everyone an opportunity to get a job and hel out.

*But that's enough off-topic-ness from me*

tchea... that was the question my very first sentance posed. and now back to square one...

ps collage is like... cutting out magazine clippings and putting them all on a paper. ... pronounced something closer to co-laj instead of college which is more like... cah-ledge. but I'm sure Thomas already gave you that lecture...

But I wasn't very persuasive, it seems, so any extra help is certainly welcome,

(I wonder if anyone knows anything that might be relevant to the topic, )
