There is a bill going through Congress right now to reinstate a Federal Draft. So all of you young people who think you will be able to live your lives the way you choose to, think again!!

Ouch. The bill isn't worded very well. I'm a conscientious objector, and apparently under Section 8, my objection has to be "because of religious training and belief". I'm pretty sure that that was changed to "because of any deeply held and coherent ethical system" or something similar, according to my encyclopedia. However, my encyclopedia is from 1998.
Glad I'm Canadian, and underage.

Tsk tsk. I doubt it will go through. If it does, you can bet I won't be going into the army, draft or not. Air Force or Navy mabye, but Army... no. They'll have to throw me in prison instead.

OK, it's a legitimate bill. Where, though, does it say anything about the Bush administration supporting, or "pushing for" it?
Bills come and go all the time, some legit, some outrageous. That's why we have 400+ congressmen, 100 senators, a pres, and 9 supreme court justices. It won't pass, and I don't see the presdent siging it.

I strongly doubt it will get passed, but even if it does, I had always had a plan to perhaps one day entered the armed forces anyway. You only have to serve one tour of duty anyway. It's just one year of your life.

That isn't true. Only children, male, can be drafted.

1. I'm underage, but if told to serve my country, I would.
2. Two days ago Kerry was anti-draft. Then, just today, he said the he would support the draft if necessary. Where is he there?

A. This is old news
B. It was debated 4-7 months ago
C. Congress might not reinstate the draft due to the fact many oppose it
D. If the draft comes it would only be in crisis situations such as "America gets invaded by North Korea"

I would personally serve if asked, but my family would be against it. (They threaten to send me to Canada ) And beyond that, I think it's a BIG mistake to force women to serve. Maybe I was brought up a little sexist in that respect, but I really disagree with women forced to serve. Volunteering is a different matter entirely.
Either way, I'm underaged as well...

sign me up if it comes around (oh wait, I already had to sign up, didn't I? I guess that takes care of that). I'm in RM's boat. If they asked me to serve my country, I would gladly. I had also wanted to do some military service sometime in my life.

I think they'll have to reinstate it, after all what is there going to be to debate about in future elections now that there isn't a draft? There won't be any argument that a certain candidate did or didn't do this or that,

I really hope this doesn't get passed. You all can call me a coward but I don't want to join the military. Even if it is for one year. Bush you'll lose a supporter if you alllow this to happen.

Well guess what? I believe that KERRY SUPPORTS THE DRAFT NOW. Unless he changes positions. And if you do that, Founder, then YOU will lose a political ally. Voting for Kerry--Humbug!

Oh no no no. I didn't imply I would vote for Kerry. I won't lower myself to that level . I mean that the draft should not be instigated. I think it needs to be done away with altogether except in the case of an extreme emergency.

Indeed. If, for example, the U.S. were attacked by another nation, then that would be a state of emergency and a draft would be a way to gather more troops for defense, since obviously regular jobs would be disrupted. However, I'd still choose to serve somewhere other than actual combat duty.

You support troops being sent to fight a questionable war, but when the possibility of the draft returning pops up, you voice your disagreement?

There is a difference. The other people that are in war? They are fighting out of their own choice genius. This ridiculous argument of we're forcing them to go? Guess what the draft isn't back yet.

I live in the UK mate. Sorry to burst your bubble there, although your foot does look better in that mouth of yours.
And just to get the point across, I made it known to those around me (friends, relatives etc), when the war in Iraq began, that I would serve my country without hesitation, should I be needed. My dream, a dream that was only shot down due to my very silly DNA which decided to give me myopia, was to serve as a pilot in the RAF.
But them's the breaks, soldier.
