The empty smile on a cryptic face
A false reassurance disguised as grace.
Time dripping from the mocking candle
Whose wick the father of minutes handles.
Departing luxuries become nothing but images,
Not to be relived until the next of lineage.
I've lost the will to put up a front,
It's not what I need, not what I want.
Can't you see the sweat poured onto the ground,
The stresses I've endured pound for pound?
And yet, what is it all worth in the end
If one misstep takes forever to mend?
I have bore witness to those before me,
Who've struggled and lost, thinking they'd be free.
Instead their shackles become tighter and colder,
Delaying the process of growing older, bolder.
I don't want to become what I hate,
A decrepit man still riding the wait.
Please, I can't stand to face it again,
The hell, the now, the future then.
Cut these cords that bind me so,
That rape my strength and batter my soul.
Just leave me with an inch of hope
That my dreams escape the dangling rope.
