The Union. Slavery is rather disgusting, and if we let the south leave, they'd have kept it for who knows how long. Maybe even up until today.

The Union. Seems dumb to me that anyone would want to break away from the United States...how silly.

seriously, guys... look at your history books more! slavery was disgusting, but if you look at the statistics, only about 1/4 of the southern families owned slaves. Of that 1/4, only about 5% of those had large plantations of slaves. The others had 1-3 slaves, maybe, if they could afford it, and often times, those were the ones who were almost part of the family.

Anyway, look at the labor in the Union at the time. women and children were working in factories for less than spit, and their living was about as up to par as the slaves in the south. All around, the 1860s were not a very comfortable situation for anyone to live.

You want to get on the South for slavery, get on Texas. They're the ones who went against all law just so they could senalk slavery into their state.

Abolition of slavery didn't come about as a "main factor" in the war until about three years after it had begun. Most people in the North, even if they did care about slavery (which most were just as prejudice against the blacks as the south was), were anti-slaveryites (just opposed to the continuation of the slave trade, but they were fine with slavery in the south as it was).

So, see, I don't really put slavery into account to sway me either way.

There was a lot more to the Civil War.

The point is the north wanted to abolish slavery and the south wanted to keep it around *generally* therefore I side with he north. I don't know a whole lot about the other details of the war.

as for me, I'd of been living in the west. Colorado only had 2 union troops, and one no one has ever heard of, and the other one just pillaged and slaughtered a group of Indians. so... I think I'd of been out of the game for the whole war hooey.

Exactly. TY.

We fought to stop the Union from constantly changing laws. Did you know that the state flag is supposed to be flown on the top of flag poles and the national under it. Due to the fact that States are suppoed to have more power than the government. Did you know that the Yankees burned homes and crops of the rebels and raped our women and killed men women and children?

I know that slavery didn't become an issue until after the war started. But then again, if the war hadn't happend, the south could still maybe have slaves. I don't really care about how many families did or didn't have slaves. If there was only one slave in the south, it would still be worth going to war for their freedom, IMO.

And yes, we all know about Sherman's march to the sea. That's war. At least he saved the only nice city,
And as T said, the South did the same sick things to the North. That's war, especially in the 1800s.

slaves were treated (in most cases) just like a part of the family. and like i said the war was fought over slaves rights. In a way the South is slave to the Union

A gilded cage is still a cage. Many would rather be free and poor, than "treated like family", and property.
And no, the south isn't a "slave to the Union". Unless, of course, you have access to some information hidden to the rest of us?

Congratulations on being in the military. I'm set to enter the Navy shortly myself. My whole family is Navy. Yet, suspiciously, they don't have access to this "information". Do they only give it to southern service members?

Quote:

What caused the American Civil War? It is amazing that even today, over 130 years after the Civil War started, there is passionate debate regarding the "cause" of the Civil War. Consider this:

It is a fact that when the armies for the North and South were first formed, only a small minority of the soldiers on either side would have declared that the reason they joined the army was to fight either "for" or "against" slavery.

However, equally true is the statement: "Had there been no slavery, there would have been no war. Had there been no moral condemnation of slavery, there would have been no war." (This was made by Sydney E. Ahlstrome, in his monumental study of religion in America A Religious History of the American People, Yale University Press,1972, on p. 649)

The message here is that the reasons a nation goes to war are usually various and complicated. The American Civil War is no exception.

Background
The curious thing is that although slavery was the moral issue of the nineteenth century that divided the political leaders of the land, the average American had very little interest in slaves or slavery. Most Southerners were small farmers that could not afford slaves. Most Northerners were small farmers or tradesmen that had never even seen a slave.

But political leaders on both sides were very interested in slaves and slavery. The South's economic system was based upon cotton--and slavery. The political leaders of the South, such as Robert Barnwell Rhett of South Carolina, William Lowndes Yancey of Alabama, The Fire-Eatersand Robert Augustus Toombs of Georgia, recognized that if the South lost her slaves (i. e., had to pay slaves wages similar to what white laborers were paid), her entire socio-economic system would probably collapse. Hence any political action that took place that threatened the slavery system of the South received the undivided attention of the South's political leaders, many of whom were themselves slave owners.

Oh sure! That's just a lousy excuse to justify one of the Earth's most HORRIBLE acts--and I don't believe it. You're just a racist.

Calming yourself may be a good idea, RM. And since M has made it so incredibly easy to use bold and italics here at STV, I'm going to ask that you try to do so. CAPS have always been equated to yelling. And when it seems you are yelling, people are less likely to listen.

And no doubt classified info is passed about. Information which you are supposed to pretend you never heard. Things like, "Maine is preparing to order Virginia to send us some... w/e".
I don't beleive you.

No, it wasn't. Well, in a sense it was: the right to have slaves.
