The Incredible Hulk

I was quite the fan of The Incredible Hulk in my youth. Whilst Superman was (and is) my favourite, The Incredible Hulk always entertained. Some of the stories were fairly simplistic at times but always great fun to see the Hulk take on villains such as Dr. Octopus, The Rhino, The Abomination and The Leader.

I thought the late 70's/early 80's TV show was fantastic too even though they completely changed the origin and premise. Sure, the core concept remained the same (anger) but everything changed. In the comics, a gamma bomb, created by Bruce Banner, exploded, bathing him in gamma radiation. This caused him to become the Hulk and, when he wasn't battling villains, he was being pursued by the military (you all knew this of course).

In the TV show, Banner gave himself an accidental overdose of gamma radiation in a lab. He soon became The Hulk who was less powerful than the comic book version. Over the series, Banner/The Hulk kept one step ahead of ruthless reporter Jack McGee, who believed The Hulk was responsible for the death of a lady called Elaina Marks.

And, of course, there was the 2003 movie, directed by Ang Lee. This film had it's moments and the CGI Hulk wasn't as bad as I expected. But overall, it was a joyless film which I don't think knew what it wanted to be. It was a little bit too heavy and should have taken a leaf out of the TV series, which had the right balance of pathos, action and social commentary.

I live in hope that we'll see another Hulk movie one day (hopefully with a different director). I WANT to see the Hulk kick butt again on the big screen. A TV series would be nice but, unlike the 70's and 80's, Marvel is giving it's heroes the big-screen treatment as opposed to small screen shows or TV movies as it did at one time.

The movie had it's moments but I thought they were few and far between.

I listened to the audio commentary by Ang Lee (it was very dry to be honest) and, whilst I respect the man's accomplishments, I don't think he was a wise choice as director. I think superhero movies are a whole new ball game and that a director should, ideally, be a fan of the hero. Sam Raimi was a fan of Spider-Man and we got a good movie.

History is filled with poor superhero movies and TV pilots (such as the dire Captain America movies) and it's always because the producers and directors had no clue what they were doing.

I hope we see The Incredible Hulk on the screen again but I won't watch it unless there is a different director attached.

the film could have been better, but rember this was a "hollywoodized" orgin story, so it could get better
