PostFri Sep 10, 2004 7:23 pm    The Stargate SG-1 DVD Collection (For UK fans)

For my fellow Brits, check out this link...

www.stargatedvd.co.uk

Yes, every fortnight, you will be able to collect a magazine of SG-1 which will have a DVD with it, with three episodes on starting from the 1st episode of the series.

I brought the first one purely for the episodes on it as I did enjoy them very much. I have no plans to collect it though, it would be expensive.

However, this is an affordable way for fans to collect select episodes of the series. Season boxsets can be expensive, particularly if you don't know whether you'll like episodes. I have watched SG-1 from the beginning and know which episodes I'd like to keep as part of my permanent collection, so I will probably pick up the magazine every now and again, if it contains episodes that I like.

Anyway, check out the link for all the info you need, including subscription information.

I've been trying to get into Stargate for a while but whenever I realise its on, I either tune in half way through an episode and don't know what is happening or I remember to turn the TV on and discover its Part 2 of another episode and again I've no idea what's going on.
So anyway, I got the mag just for the DVD (and at 3.99 I figured not much could go wrong) and I've only watched the first episode so far but it's pretty good.

The Atlantis series looks particularly good but of course I haven't seen any of that yet...

Yep. Sort of. I think the first episode was a TV movie, wasn't it? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all a ploy really. You see, if you subscribe, you will get some free gifts (not that they're really free, you're paying for them with your subscription), one of the gifts being a DVD of the pilot episode/movie.

By the way, Part 1 is 3.99, every issue after is 7.99. I've read the magazine, it's not too bad but it really doesn't tell you anything you wouldn't already know from watching the show. Perhaps future issues will explore things more.

Yeah - I bought it thinking the first episode would be the pilot episode...the idea being I would be able to start right from the very beginning.

Only I've just discovered it starts with the second episode. If you subscribe you get it free but that's no good to me lol. It's like 7.99 every fortnight!

How does that compare with buying the season boxsets?

The magazine itself looks pretty much like the Star Trek version they did, which, for my money, seemed to be a simple rehash of the Star Trek Fact Files...

The whole first season on DVD is 29.99.

If you buy the mags it will be:

7 DVDs, 3 eps each. Not including "Free" first ep.

1 DVD 3.99
6 DVD 7.99

Total = 51.93

So your basicly paying 21.94 for the magazines

I guess it depends on how much you like SG-1.

If you enjoy 99.9% of the episodes, season boxsets are more viable. However, if you'd prefer to pick and choose episodes, this collection may be more suitable.

7.99 a fortnight is expensive. In the history of SG-1, there are only five episodes I can think of that I would like to keep as part of my permanent collection so this would be more viable for me, as it just means spending 7.99 on very, very rare occasions.

I guess it all depends on the individual. But as I said before, the magazine you get will not tell you anything that you won't already know. Maybe. I guess it will contain plenty of useful info for new fans of SG-1 but it'll be a waste of time for longtime fans.

They bring out a lot of collections like this. In late 2001, they brought out a James Bond collection which ran for about 32 issues. As someone who has seen every Bond movie, I didn't bother to get it because it just told me what I already knew and it seemed more suited to kids anyway.

The Star Trek Collection is a rehash of the earlier Fact Files, I agree with that. I think that costs 7.99 as well. If there's a particular Trek film you want, 7.99 for a DVD and magazine may seem reasonable but it won't be the 2-disc Special Editions, just the "bare bones" releases.

I guess, with any collection, it's best to browse the magazine on the shelf and only buy if it contains an episode/movie that you want to keep. Otherwise, it is far too expensive.

I had no idea that the SG-1 boxsets were 29.99. That is quite a reasonable price.

I had guessed they would be in the region of the Trek prices which can be anything between 51-80.

I only brought the SG-1 collection's first issue because, funnily enough, the three episodes on the DVD are my faves of Season 1 and episodes I wish to keep. I don't desire to permanently own any other Season 1 episodes.

Really. That's interesting......which episodes are on there?

'Cause I thought that *after* the pilot, the next few episodes were some of the series' weakest. The single weakest episode is probably "Emancipation", IMO.

And yeah, the SG1 box sets are very reasonably priced. Seasons 1-3 in particular. Season 4-6 cost a bit more, because they've got commentaries on every single episode.

The movie Stargate, starring Kurt Russel and James Spader, was theatrical. The series uses that as backstory, but changes a few details.

The first episode of Stargate SG-1 is "Children of the Gods". It might officially be a TV movie, but no moreso than "Caretaker" or "Encounter at Farpoint" or "Emissary"------its just a two-hour pilot, which is split into two parts for reruns.

The two-hour version is better, as is usually the case.

And of course, the first regular episode is "The Enemy Within".

Hope that clears up any confusion that remained.....

Oh, I remember now. Thank you. I think I saw it as a two-hour movie on VHS back in '97.

The episods on the disc are "The Enemy Within", "Emancipation" and "The Broca Divide".

I liked "The Enemy Within" even though the plot wasn't entirely original for a sci-fi show. It also starred Jay Acovone, one of my favourite "obscure" actors who, amongst other things, played an Assistant DA in Beauty and the Beast (the TV show from the 80's).

"Emancipation" wasn't a bad episode in my opinon. I always love sci-fi episodes where a crew lands on a planet whose culture mirrors that of ancient Earth (in this episode, the race had similarities to the Mongols) and it gave Captain Carter a chance to shine.

"The Broca Divide" wasn't an original plot either but I liked the way most of it was set on SG-1 base with the base being quarantined by Gen. Hammond.

Interestingly enough, my favourite episodes of SG-1 have always been the ones set on Earth, usually dealing with conspiracy theories or threats to SG-1's base. I also like them because it gives Don S. Davis a chance to shine.

In a way, I am sorry that we haven't got to see Gen. Hammond go off-world more often. If memory serves me right, he's only been off-world on two occasions that I can remember. Now, I know that in the real world, an Air Force General would not spend too much time in the thick of things, after all, you need someone delegating command at base. But I think Davis is such a good actor that a couple of off-world missions for Hammond would have been interesting.

I also have similar feelings about Dr. Frasier (I do love Teryl Rothery). She never seemed to have a good plot of her own, she was always just a character necessary to other people's plots. There have been a few episodes of SG-1 which saw one of the personnel possessed, in danger or go through a change but it never seemed to be Frasier caught in the action. It would have been nice to see at least one episode with Frasier on an off-world mission (and I'm not talking about her going through the gate for five minutes and back) caught in the action.

As far as I'm concerned, modern sci-fi shows should try to do something with the lesser characters every once in a while. It was different in the 60's with something like Star Trek because the Kirk/Spock/McCoy trio was integral to the show but modern sci-fi is different. It should focus on the lesser characters every now and again.

Phew! Sorry for going off-topic a little, folks.

Hammond has been offworld three times, that I can recall. "Prisoners", season 2, "Into the Fire", season 3, and "Fallen", season 7.

Umm.....have you seen "Heros, Part 2" (season 7)?

If not, I won't spoil it.

Thanks for that. Season 7 has just started here so "Fallen" hasn't aired yet.

Nope. I believe that will air in two weeks time. I look forward to it.

Well, among other things, keep an eye out for Adam Baldwin as the leader of SG-13.

At the moment he's probably best known for playing Jayne on Firefly, but he's been in a surprising amount of stuff over the years----Independence Day, for one.

Lol I know the scene you mean but I never realised it was him before...next time I watch Independence Day it'll be for that scene alone lol.

It was only recently I realised that the crazy scientist guy in Independence Day is Brent Spiner lol - I'm *that* observant lol.

I'd never seen an episode of Firefly - I just went out and bought the boxset. Bit of a gamble really but one that paid off for me. I'd read a topic on this forum (Actually I think it may've been one you started Lindley) and I looked at a few fan websites and I was impressed. After rapidly losing interest in Star Trek, Firefly was a breath of fresh air. At last, a show that does not revolve around a space battle at the end of every episode (Enterprise anyone?) and is even more entertaining.

I wasn't really into Buffy but I loved the one-liners the characters came out with and it's good to see Joss Whedon carried that aspect over into Firefly. + I'm really looking forward to the Firefly movie next year - within a month of Star Wars Episode 3 as well! That's gonna be a Movie Month for me lol.

Well, I don't really want to take this further off-topic, but what the heck......you might enjoy Angel as well.

Its got a similar mythology to Buffy, except the lines between good and evil are a lot more blurry, and there's a lot less of the Teen Angst Factor at work.

The premise is kind of, "Vamp detective fights the forces of darkness---including his fellow vamps, other demons, and lawyers." Seriously, lawyers. A group of evil lawyers is one of the primary baddies.

Something to try out, at some point, anyway.

From what I've seen of Angel, it is a very good and very unique show and WB were stupid to cancel it.

I gave up on the show initially? Why? Well, one of our stupid terrestrial channels treated it with no respect at all. It was broadcast in an early evening slot which meant cuts, loads of cuts, had to be made. Because of these "censorship kings", entire fight scenes were often cut and episodes clocked in at around 30 minutes. Often you would see Angel about to battle a monster/demon/whatever and then you'd cut to a scene with Angel victorious. How disrespectful!

Eventually, I managed to see the first season uncut and I enjoyed it. I liked it because it was different, you never knew what to expect. Things didn't always go to plan, the people you thought would survive didn't, the people you thought would die often survived. Sometimes, the show would shock you (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT COMING UP, DON'T READ IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE SHOW)...

...such as the time when Angel allowed a room full of lawyers to be massacred. Who saw that coming?

The show wasn't afraid to be different, it wasn't afraid to shock you and it had no qualms about killing off ANY character. TV is a poorer place without Angel.
