PostWed Sep 08, 2004 5:24 pm    9/11 3-year Anniversary! NEVER FORGET IT.

This Saturday brings us the 3-year Anniversary of these horrific attacks. I want to take your feelings and expressions on the attack and towards the families of those who died, and your thoughts on the war on terror, considering where we are today.

I was watching the news afew days ago and they had a preview of oprah on and they were talking about how the fire fighters that went though 9/11 were actually cheating on their wives with the widows of the dead fire fighters. They think its ok. I think its BS that they can use something like 9/11 to justify their reasons for cheating...

oh and uh 9/11 makes me sad.

I took the day off from work. (9/11 is also my parents wedding anniversary).
I'm going to be at my Nana's most of the day, where no doubt CNN will be on nearly constantly, so there'll be a lot of coverage. Watching the DVD I mentioned in the other topic always makes me cry.

Well Im not American but i wanna speak my mind about this tragedy. On September 11, 2001 was or will be one of the historican accounts for years to come and everyone will remember this day for years to come. Its like another Pearl Harbor has happened and the US had to get back to whoever was responceable that made this happen. Just like back in 41 and we know who was responiable at that time. But this time is differnt and a different place. And for me a Canadian we wont be put to that test and I dont think we will be ever. Maybe when all of us are old or passed on, so who knows when we will. To answer to the question on where i was that day. I was in school and my teacher put on the radio for us to hear some music and at that excact moment we all heard of what happened to the World Trade Center's and we were in shock of what we heared and no words can explain it. And why did they pick that day and that month to do it. They could have pick any other months or days of the year but why this one out of all them. So, for me I will never know what happened until a certain person explains it all to us to make it clear and make us understand it more better. So this is my opioin and please respect it and I hope you will agree with me. So, if you like it I wouldnt mind to see a pm or what the case maybe.

Also this event made me cry and in shock.

You know whats creepy? The 10th of September, 2001, the Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh was stabbed and hospitalized.

She died the 11th.

Coinscidence, yes, but frightening nontheless.

I remember saying some horrible things back at the 11th about America, things that I regret. It was cruel of me, and I hope you've all forgotten that.
9/11 was horrible for the whole world. It was the first attack in a row of others, and more will come, I'm sure.

So on Saturday, don't just honour the dead of the WTC tragedy, but all the victims of terrorism. Iraq, Afghanistan, and now recently, Russia.

And also, if you're religious, say a little prayer for Anna Lindh, as well, she deserves it.

Quote:
From Fox News' Neil Cavuto:

I received this e-mail from Denny Zarnt of Chapel Hill, North Carolina:

"A number of years ago as I was walking out the door on just another business airplane trip, I said to my 15-year-old daughter, 'Ah, come on and give your old dad a hug. You never know with these airplanes, I might not see you again.' She relented and gave me a big hug... that was the last time I saw her. One week later she died in an airplane crash. I thank God every day that she chose to give me that hug."

Denny Zarnt lost his little girl along with 135 others when Delta Flight 191 (search) slammed into the ground in Dallas on August 2, 1985. And he's right: We spend an enormous amount of time lamenting the moment, forgetting the fact that the moment passes. Sometimes before you know it and way before you ever appreciate it.

How many of us would love to be with loved ones long gone for just one more meeting? One more cup of coffee? One more trip to the ballgame? One more soccer practice? One more anything?

And how many 9/11 families are going through those one more moments all over again? Remembering cell phone conversations if they were so lucky that day, or hasty goodbyes that morning, if they were not?

How many of them would reflect on the twists of life and the freak flukes of life: The people who got out of those burning towers and their loved ones who did not.

They say time heals all wounds. I suspect it makes more just fester.

Replaying the what ifs: What if Charlie had not gone to work that day? What if the friendly stewardess had not so cheerfully switched flights for a pal that day?

It doesn't do much to replay the past, but it should give some of us a little focus on the present and the loved ones we know, still with us today. There are no guarantees they'll be with us or we with them tomorrow.

So go ahead and hug. Because, for the life of me, I've never heard anyone mourning the passing of a loved one, say, "If only we didn't hug so much."

Not once. Not ever.

I hope the rememberence is quieter this year. Hell, I hope there's very little t.v. coverage (unlikely). Let's just let the bereaved get on with things themselves.

I'm an idiot am I? Then so are some of the families of the victims. I know at last years rememberence quite a few of them hoped the 3rd one would be alot more intimate, for themselves. Good call there RM, you could make president.

I fail to see what an entire day of 9/11 t.v. coverage will result in. Jesus, just let them grieve in peace.

I think you fail to realize that the entire US was 'victim' to what happened on 9/11. Those who lost loved ones, more so, yes. But we all greive.
No, there shouldn't be an entire day of TV about it, but we shouldn't let it fall by the wayside, either. Besides, like Pearl Harbor, and others, it's been set aside as a day of rememberance. Flags will be at half staff until noon, just like Memorial Day. In the US, we have many holidays honoring those who died for us, who gave us our freedom.
While 9/11 was an act of cowards, the nation must show that it is still strong.
Besides, if you want to play detective concerning the plane that hit the Pentagon... We will remember, and honor, those who died, and those who lived.

I believe Anna Lindh died exactly 1 year ago, September 11th, 2003; not 2001.

Yesterday evening and this morning, I've been watching documentaries on the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Even now I can hardly believe it really happend; it's so horrific.

I remember, on September the 11th 2001, I was sitting in the car waiting for my sister to finish her exam. I turned on the radio and listened to the news. They kept repeating it over and over. At first I thought they were talking about a movie but I quickly realized it was going to be something I'd never forget.

I agree, however it has been forgotton, in a sense, by MANY--primarily on the Left, as I note, and I blieve that it is necessary that we have one last day of rememberance for today but next year do what you're saying, but one other side point of FOX News putting a day towards 9/11 is that terrorism can be discussed. The Hurricanes have been overshadowing the grave threat to America and the World.

Quote:
Three Years Later, Nation Remembers Sept. 11
NEW YORK With quavering voices, parents and grandparents of those killed at the World Trade Center (search) slowly read the names of the victims early Saturday to mark the third anniversary of the attacks that brought down the twin towers.

Moments of silence were observed at 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., the times two planes slammed into the trade center towers on Sept. 11, 2001 (search), and at 9:59 and 10:29, when the two towers collapsed.

Many of the family members cried quietly and embraced each other.

"Every day is hard, but this day is a little bit harder," said Nancy Brandemarti, who was attending the ground zero remembrance for the first time. "This day is just a day to think about him."

At Arlington National Cemetery (search), there was a moment of silence at 9:37, the time that another hijacked plane hit the Pentagon, where 184 people died. In Pennsylvania, more than 1,500 people gathered in the field where the fourth plane went down, killing the 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93.

The president and first lady also observed a moment of silence on the White House's South Lawn as the nation began a day of remembrance.

At the trade center site in lower Manhattan, parents and grandparents stood in pairs at two podiums, reading the list of the 2,749 people killed there -- a recitation that lasted more than two hours.

They read slowly and precisely, and added poignant dedications when they reached the names of their own loved ones. "And our loving son, Paul Robert Eckna, our tower of strength -- we love and miss you," said Carol Eckna.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. George Pataki, and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani each delivered readings. Pataki's quoted former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, describing losses of World War II: "There's no tragedy in life like the death of a child. Things never get back to the way they were."

As the reading of names began, other family members of victims descended the ramp into the pit of the trade center site and laid flowers in two small reflecting pools meant to evoke the footprints of the twin trade center towers. Others scrawled messages on the edges of the pools.

The area, seven stories below street level, is considered sacred ground by many. It was there that rescue workers combed the debris with rakes, painstakingly searching for the tiniest fragments of human remains.

Last year, children recited the names of the dead, and on the first anniversary, it was dignitaries, community leaders and some relatives of victims. This year, parents and grandparents had the honor.

Pat Hawley, 44, was among the family members at the site Saturday morning. Hawley, of Charlotte, N.C., said he comes to the ground zero ceremony every year to remember his older sister, Karen Sue Juday.

"It seems like it gets harder every year, because it's that much more time since I've been able to talk to my sister and be with her," he said.

After the fourth moment of silence, Rosanne Cash sang a muted rendition of the traditional Irish ballad "Danny Boy."

At Arlington National Cemetery, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld joined relatives of those killed in the Pentagon near a large granite memorial marker that bears the names of each victim.

"The lives that were lost on September 11th have meaning. They live on as a testament to a country that is courageous, that is determined, to a people that are resilient despite great loss, and to a cause that continues until that mission is accomplished and beyond," Rumsfeld said.

Family members laid flags at the marker and ran their fingers across the names inscribed.

Both President Bush and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry spoke on the anniversary of the attacks. Bush used the occasion to warn of continued danger and pledge victory in the war on terror.

"We will not relent until the terrorists who plot murder against our people are found and dealt with," Bush said in a rare live radio address from the Oval Office.

Kerry praised the spirit of the country in the days and months after the attacks. "We are one America in our prayers for those who were taken from us on September 11 and for their families," he said. "And we are one America in our unbending determination to defend our country to find and get the terrorists before they get us."

In a field in western Pennsylvania where Flight 93 went down, volunteers rang two large bells as the names of each of the plane's 40 passengers and crew were read.

"No words, no memorials, can ever replace all that you have lost," Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said to the victims' families at the ceremony.

In Boston, a small plane pulled an American flag behind it as about 150 family members of Sept. 11 victims paused for a moment of silence. Air Force Col. Jim Ogonowski, whose brother John, piloted one of the hijacked planes, urged grieving families to remember more than the horrors of that day.

"I ask you to remember what followed the attacks," he said. "Strangers helping strangers, neighbors helping neighbors, acts of good will everywhere. That's the part of September 11th the terrorist don't want to remember."

Three years on, work still continues to identify the 20,000 pieces of human remains recovered from the trade center site. The medical examiner's office has identified about 1,570 victims, or just 60 percent. They do not expect to match the remains of every victim because some remains were too badly damaged in the fiery collapse.

Meanwhile, much has changed at the 16-acre site where the 110-story towers once stood. A 20-ton granite cornerstone was laid on July 4 for the 1,776-foot-tall Freedom Tower, the skyscraper expected to be completed by 2009.

A few blocks from the site, friends and families of the 73 people who died at Windows on the World, the restaurant at the top of the trade center, tossed roses into the Hudson River for each of the victims.

"We used to be a family and more than a family. We used to say, `God bless Windows on the World,"' said Fekkek Mamdouh, who was a waiter there.

At sundown, light beams that evoke the twin towers will be projected upward from a lot near the site, to remain on through the night. The memorial lights were first seen on March 11, 2002, with a plan to light them each year for the anniversary.

Saturday also marked the beginning of a competition to design a permanent national memorial to honor Flight 93's passengers and crew. The memorial site encompasses 2,200 acres, including the spot where the plane crashed.

Bush Marks Sept. 11, Vows to Defeat Terror
WASHINGTON President Bush (search) marked the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks Saturday by warning of continued danger to the United States and pledging victory over international terror.

"We will not relent until the terrorists who plot murder against our people are found and dealt with," Bush said in a rare live radio address from the Oval Office (search) to mark the third anniversary of the event that brought terrorism home to Americans.

Relatives of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 (search), attacks, firefighters and other emergency responders surrounded the president as he spoke.

Earlier, he observed the third anniversary of the day that transformed his presidency and underpins his re-election campaign by attending a prayer service and presiding over a moment of silence at the White House.

"Time has passed, but the memories do not fade," Bush said in his brief radio remarks.

He applauded the courage of the Sept. 11 families and of the troops who have fought the war on terror he launched in response to the attacks.

"The terrorist attacks on September the 11th were a turning point for our nation," he said. "We saw the goals of a determined enemy to expand the scale of their murder and force America to retreat from the world. Our nation accepted a mission: we will defeat this enemy."

At St. Johns Episcopal Church near the White House, the president and the first lady, Laura Bush, both dressed in black, lit candles to open the early morning ceremony but said nothing during the service nor as they left.

In his homily, the rector, the Rev. Luis Leon, reminded Bush that "part of his role is to be chaplain to this nation." Leon also counseled that "hatred is not the answer" in responding to the terrorist attacks and asked his congregation to "pray for those who mean to do us harm."

Afterward, at 8:46 a.m. EDT, the Bushes and Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, presided over a moment of silence marking the minute that American Airlines Flight 11 hit the north tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Preceded by music played by a Marine band on the White House balcony and a color guard procession, the couples strode onto the South Lawn before dozens of White House staff, Sept. 11 family members and members of Congress. The foursome bowed their heads and placed their hands over their hearts as a lone bugler played taps, then silently went back inside.

As he did last year, Bush signed proclamations designating Sept. 11 as a national day of prayer and remembrance and as Patriot Day.

Bush's Democratic rival for the White House, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, was attending a memorial in his hometown, Boston.

Delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, Kerry praised the spirit of the country in the days and months after the attacks. "We are one America in our prayers for those who were taken from us on September 11 and for their families," he said. "And we are one America in our unbending determination to defend our country to find and get the terrorists before they get us."

Across the Potomac River from Washington, at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld joined with dozens of relatives, friends and co-workers of the 184 people killed at the Pentagon on Sept. 11 to observe a moment of silent at 9:37 a.m. That was when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the nation's defense headquarters.

The innocent people on the plane and at the Pentagon will not be forgotten, Rumsfeld promised.

"The lives that were lost on September 11th have meaning. They live on as a testament to a country that is courageous, that is determined, to a people that are resilient despite great loss, and to a cause that continues until that mission is accomplished and beyond."

Bush has made the fight against terrorism the focus of his re-election effort.

"This election will also determine how America responds to the continuing danger of terrorism," he said Friday in Huntington, W.Va.

Bush's campaign has aimed to paint Kerry as indecisive in order to plant doubts about his ability to protect the nation and to persuade voters they shouldn't change course in dangerous times.

An Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Friday found that handling terrorism remains Bush's strongest issue, with 55 percent approving of the job he's done in the anti-terror battle and 43 percent disapproving. He also has a double-digit lead over Kerry on who would do a better job of protecting the country.

The only other time Bush has delivered a live radio address was on March 9, 2002, when he spoke from the Rose Garden as part of a ceremony signing an economic stimulus package into law.

Following the Sept. 11 events, Bush planned to spent the weekend at Camp David, Md. Counting his stays at his Texas ranch and his family's home in Maine, he has not spent a full day in the capital since Aug. 2.

I read the paper today. It had several widows, asking that they be allowed to get on with their lives, and be set free from their current status as global symbols of the results of terrorism.
