PostSat Sep 04, 2004 6:25 pm    Star Wars Trilogy Boxset

Finally, the original Star Wars trilogy will be arriving on R2 DVD on the 20th September. Who's buying it? I'm undecided.

The extras are impressive. Audio commentaries (which I mostly like) for all three films. And a bonus disc with some great featurettes and documentaries. They haven't gone overboard on the extras IMO but they have worked hard to give Star Wars fans what they want.

Oh, and the packaging is cool too.

But, I am a little disappointed. It is the 1997 Special Editions which are being released. For various reasons, I wasn't overkeen on them (remember that fake CGI Jabba in A New Hope). I would rather the Original versions were released. Perhaps both the Originals and Special Editions could have been released.

I do respect the original trilogy. It was innovative filmmaking. It taught studios how to market their movies properly. It was innovative in regards to movie merchandising.

There is one other reason for me not purchasing it and it's one I think we should consider. I haven't seen The Phantom Menace or Attack Of The Clones but I plan to watch them before Episode III is released next year. I have a feeling that after Episode III is released, all six movies will be released as part of a BUMPER package with all new features and extras. It's inevitable really. In this day and age of DVD, the majority of trilogies/franchises get a bumper release eventually. Perhaps it may be wise to save the pennies (or cents or whatever currency you use).

After reading this post I've made, I probably will give in and buy it. Even though there are certain things I am not pleased with, it'll still be a nice trilogy to add to my collection.

May The Force Be With You.

From my point of view the Star Wars extended edition is just as good as the original...simply because its longer lol.

I had read that there were several deleted scenes in this edition but I don't know if that's just a rumour.

Apparently though there are changes to this one...the ghost of Anakin Skywalker has apparently been replaced with a shot of Hayden Christensen (or whatever his last name is lol)...some of the Emperor's dialogue has been rewritten as well I heard. Though of course that could be another rumour...

I am definetly buying the trilogy, ive always wondered for years when they would release them on DVD. I read in the latest SFX magazine that its been the most cleaned up film ever, so it will be very good quality considering its from the 70's.

Im not too worried about one big 6 episode package, since Episode 1 and 2, tho important were a bit dissapointing. The original 4, 5 and 6 will always be the best and deserve to be dvds.

Is there a particular reason why it took the trilogy so long to come to DVD because I am surprised it didn't arrive years ago.

Yeah I would have thought they would have released it earlier as well.
I wonder if they had originally planned to release it after Episode 3 with the idea being that the prequels would increasingly ramp up the greatness of the franchise. Instead they seem to have (so far) fizzled out (in comparison with the originals)...thus they've decided they might as well release them now...or not. I've really no idea but it is odd.

Will any of you be getting the animated series as they are released?
I've heard that the Clone Wars cartoon series will be DVD release before Episode 3 hits the cinemas and the Ewoks/Droids series are also hitting DVD relatively soon...I've seen the first Clone Wars series and thought it was OK but nothing special.
Never seen the Droids/Ewoks collections though I've heard they're pretty bad...

Yeah it has been available for pre-order for a few months now.
Apparently when Amazon advertised it for pre-order they had were taken by surprise the amount of interest that was shown.

Apparently it broke all previous records as it became the most-ordered product on the site...I think I read that in "Empire", the UK film magazine.

Oh and by the way, HMV is offering it in a unique "Golden" box (as opposed to the standard silver one)...might be collectible one day.

Similarly MVC is offering a free Star Wars "Top Trumps" game if you pre-order with them.

Presumably you'll pay the RRP at high street stores though. Amazon is the cheapest I've seen it, at 26.99 and free delivery as well.

Mind you I'm suffering from that famous medical condition "lack of cash" so it may be a while before I order mine...

It is GREAT! I am SOOOO looking forward to it! Star Wars is the best!
And it's September 21st, not 20th.

I think they have re rendered Jabba in A New Hope so he should look more real and less CGIish

Really? I'm sure I read in a magazine that HMV were offering the golden boxset as exclusive packaging.

<5 Minutes Later>
Hey I found that advert in this months issue of Empire! It advertises HMV selling the DVD boxset in a "Limited Edition Gold Sleeve". It's identical to the one you posted at that URL except it doesn't say Full Screen on the 'spine'. Weird!

It also says that HMV Trocadero, Picadilly Circus, London is staying open until midnight on the 19th September to 'celebrate' the release on the 20th. Presumably if you're that desperate they'll be available then lol. I've now no idea what the release date is...I've heard it as the 20th, 22nd and 24th now lol.

But anyway, that Jabba looks miles better than the first CGI one that they edited in.

Also, does anybody know why the prequels are being re-released? Type the titles of the prequels in on Amazon (under the DVD section) and you'll see that they have a release date within a week of the trilogy boxset yet they look as though they have the same content and appearance...

Anyone know anything about that (and yes, I did post this same post in the Jedi Business topic because I didn't know where people would be most likely to reply but I figured it was content-relevant...)

Episodes One and Two are ALREADY ON DVD.
However, Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith isn't coming to theatre's until May 19th, so there won't be a prequel boxset for some time.

Yeah I know they're already on DVD - I have them myself. If you look on Amazon though it lists them as not out yet - coming with a few days of the upcoming Trilogy boxset

Personally, I found the cartoons very lightweight. How familiar are you with 80's cartoons, my friend? Some of them such as He-Man, She-Ra, Transformers and Thundercats were very good. However, the rest, in my opinion, were just standard fare.

I'd probably watch the Droids and Ewoks cartoons if they were on TV and I had nothing else to do. But I wouldn't pay money to buy them.

I'm afraid to say I'm not very familiar; having been born in 86 I saw the odd repeat of He-Man and Thundercats but not alot - alas, I was born into a time of Power Rangers and missed all the good stuff lol.

I found these images at the Firefly site, www.fireflyfans.net of the replaced scene at the end of Return of the Jedi.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=7130

Now, ask me, it just looks plain wrong.

It's actually the first Episode 3 Anakin I've seen though.
