Thousands of Demonstrators Hit NYC Streets

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the fortified streets of Manhattan on Sunday to protest President Bush's foreign and domestic policies as Republican delegates gathered to nominate the president for a second term.

A day ahead of the start of the Republican National Convention, protesters gathered 20 blocks south of the convention site. "The majority of this country wants the Bush administration out of office," filmmaker and Bush critic Michael Moore told the crowd.

Meanwhile, Bush suggested in an interview with Time magazine that he still would have gone into Iraq but with different tactics if he had known "that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day."

He called the swift military offensive that led to the fall of Baghdad in April 2003 "a catastrophic success" in light of the fact that fighting continues to this day despite the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's government.

Pre-convention polls showed the presidential race evenly split between Bush and Democrat John Kerry, although the challenger has lost ground since his convention in Boston a month ago. The four-day Republican convention opens Monday.

Up to 250,000 demonstrators were expected to march up Seventh Avenue past the Madison Square Garden convention site.

"Today we send our message," said Leslie Cagan, leader of United for Peace and Justice, the march's organizer. As marchers began their protest, one handmade sign read, "Iraq and Vietnam. So many deliberate lies. So many wasted lives."

A large banner said, "Save America. Defeat Bush." People poked their heads out of apartment windows to watch the marchers in the sweltering heat.

Moore, the director of "Fahrenheit 9-11," told fellow protesters that "the majority never voted for the Bush administration, and the majority are here to say, `It's time to have our country back in our hands.'"

New York police said more than 300 people had been arrested through Saturday night for disorderly conduct and convention-related incidents.

On the eve of the convention, politicians of both parties made the rounds of television talk shows.

Sen. Zell Miller, a Georgia Democrat who will deliver the keynote address Wednesday night, said he'd never voted for a Republican for president "but I'm going to this time."

Kerry "is not in the mainstream of this country. He's way to the left of this country," Miller said on Fox News Sunday.

Bush went to church Sunday morning, rode his mountain bike and was flying later to Wheeling, W.Va., for a rally. He was campaigning in battleground states as he makes his way to this overwhelmingly Democratic convention city.

Kerry was spending the day at his beachfront home in Nantucket, Mass., where he planned to plot strategy for the final two months of the presidential campaign.

"We've got 66 days to go, and I'm in a fighting mood," he said on Saturday during a campaign visit to Washington state.

Meanwhile, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., said that Bush's re-election "would be a disaster." Interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press," Clinton accused the president of "four years of unaccountable use of power" and of a failed economic policy.

Asked if she agreed with Kerry's call for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to resign, Clinton said, "I'm hoping the entire administration is fired on Nov. 2."

On Saturday, thousands of abortion rights protesters marched across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Besides the protest march past the convention site, several other events were planned, including a gay rights demonstration and a vigil in Central Park by a group of Sept. 11 families opposed to the Iraq war.

The New York Daily News made a front-page pitch for calm on Sunday, publishing a front-page editorial with the headline, "Play Nice."

The convention site is several miles north of Ground Zero, where two hijacked planes destroyed both towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Nearly 3,000 people died there, at the Pentagon and at a crash site in Pennsylvania.

Thousands of police guarded New York roadways, bridges, tunnels and ports, while vehicle restrictions in an 18-square-block area around the Garden snarled traffic in a city already congested.

Inside the hall, the transformation from sports and entertainment center to convention site was complete, with a custom-made podium filling one side of the hall and thousands of balloons above.

A small group of delegates have been here since the middle of last week for platform hearings, but scores were arriving on Sunday.

Bush arrives Wednesday. He'll spend one night in New York before bolting for the battlegrounds of Pennsylvania, Ohio and beyond shortly after accepting the GOP nomination.

The delegates were arriving under unprecedented security.

Convention attendees were greeted with a list of prohibited items that included guns, explosives, fireworks and knives - "regardless of size" - as well as some less obvious items such as umbrellas.

"Umbrellas - especially the big golf-type ones - they could be used in an improper way as a weapon," said Ann Roman, a spokeswoman for the Secret Service.

Yeah, and you know what I've heard: Protesters are sending kids out to spit on Republicans, are going to dress up like specific people and direct them to the wrong place, and downright NOT listen to the authorities! All of this stuff is HORRIBLE!

From what I heard on NBC nightly news it was verried the NYPD said it was something like 130,000 the people who set it up said it was around 230,000 and others said it was close to 500,000 but I'll agree its alot of people who want their voice heard.

No, I don't have proof, but it was a rumor that Hannity spoke about on his radio show, but...

I did see on the News that a few demonstrators were going to be arrested for starting some sort of fire, but 9 others got in the way and acted against the police. Many--MANY--of the protestors acted in DISORDERLY CONDUCT, said a FOX News channel reporter.
Was there any of this during the DNC? NO!

The news reports that we had here said there was between 100 000 and 200 000 people that marched, but that was during them so there might have been more that arrived later.

Uh and you don't think that there are people who want Bush and not Kerry? This is ridiculous. There is no respect being shown here. We didn't bother ya'll for your convention and you shouldn't for us. It isn't even a peaceful march. We have people setting fires and being arrested all over the place. The least they can do is act civilized.

250 people arrested (Last i saw) of the 250,000 (Poilice estimate) to 400,000 (Organizer estimate) people. Got the numbers off my Friend James who was down there.

Many people were down there for ANTI-WAR reasons, It wasn't all the Anti-Bush haters everyone keeps complaining about.

Well im sure they all aren't there to bash Bush but that dosn't change the fact they need to calm down. You don't need to get arrested to prove you don't like war.

First of all I heard the numbers were around 300 and that was only so far. Even if its 250. That my friend isn't a "few".

I know what your trying to say though. It doesn't change the fact that this still isn't a proper time for demonstrations. We can't even have our convention in peace like ya'll did. Theres no respect which is sad.

Not so much about Bush? Did we happen to see the cover of the New York Times today?
From what we are seeing, Dems prefer using violence, while saying they are protesting violence... Sounds... stupid, IMO.
Republicans demonstrated at the DNC, but did so with decorum.

PostWed Sep 01, 2004 10:08 pm    Here's what they do.

Here's what the Democrats are doing in these protests, and you CAN'T tell me that it's just because they're "anti-war."

From the NY Post, Online edition:

Quote:
The demonstrations grew demonic at the Republican National Convention yesterday as protesters set fire to a traffic light, tipped over a fruit cart, tossed around garbage cans, attacked a journalist and spit on Republican conventioneers in a wave of mayhem across Manhattan.

Police said more 1000 people had been arrested by 11 p.m., but that number continued growing as the NYPD rounded up activists gathering at the New York Public Library, Herald Square, Union Square, Madison Avenue and elsewhere.

At least 16 arrests involved assaults on cops, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

The huge number of arrests did not humble those behind the anti-Bush outbursts.

"We've showed that there are thousands of people in New York who are willing to stand up to the police," said Eric Laursen, a spokesman for the A31 Action Coalition, which coordinated more than a dozen demonstrations yesterday.

"The streets of New York belong to the people."

Last night, a lot of those people were angry and nasty.

At Madison Square Garden, the protests got physical and a little wet as Bush-haters roughed up and spit on GOP delegates who got caught up in the demonstration crowds as they tried to enter the convention.

One 63-year-old delegate from Mississippi told The Post he was manhandled by protesters who tried to block his way.

"I don't mind them demonstrating, but to spit on people is unbelievable," he said, as he wiped phlegm from his hat.

Shortly after 8 p.m., a crazed protester took out his anger on the media by rushing onto the outdoor set of Chris Matthews' MSNBC talk show. He tried to grab Matthews as he interviewed Christie Whitman, but security grabbed him first and he was arrested.

The string of protests and arrests continued long after dark as throngs of anti-Bush activists went wild along Madison Avenue between East 26th and East 29th streets, tossing garbage cans and setting a traffic light on fire.

The mayhem caused a group of Brooklyn GOP supporters attending dinner at Scopa on East 28th Street to hole up inside until the cops cleared the area, making nearly 40 arrests.

Cops also broke out their nets and made more arrests as protesters left en masse from rallies at Union Square. On East 17th Street, some 60 people were busted for blocking a sidewalk. On East 16th Street, dozens more were arrested.

At about 9 p.m., mayhem broke out at West 35th Street and Sixth Avenue when protesters blocked a bus load of delegates from Louisiana from getting into to the Garden.

Cops swarmed in and tried to restore order, but not before protesters overturned a fruit cart filled with bananas and other victuals, some of which were quickly turned into messy missiles. More than 100 were arrested and carted away in a city bus.

Earlier in the day cops used orange plastic netting to corral and arrest protesters, including some starting off on a march by the War Resisters League and the School of the Americas Watch at the World Trade Center site.

Police said organizers of that afternoon's marches, who did not have a permit, had agreed to have their group of several thousand parade two-by-two north toward Union Square.

But witnesses said that when the head of the march got bunched up, a police supervisor ordered officers in with the netting to bust about 200 people. Some out-of-town journalists were swept up in the arrests.

"They just moved in without any warning," said David Brune, 60, a protester who called the arrests "totally unnecessary."

Other witnesses said cops first warned people to disperse, but many did not hear them.

Other protests and marches occurred in subways, in front of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, outside the Fox News Channel's Rockefeller Center studios, and outside Sotheby's auction house.

Activists at the Port Authority Bus Terminal tried to unfurl a blue banner that read "Four More Months" from the side of the fourth-floor parking lot, but it got snagged on a railing.

Cops spotted the banner and chased down the two protesters.

Also yesterday, authorities revealed details of how a Bush-hating Yale student wrestled with Secret Service agents and tried to get close to Vice President Dick Cheney Monday night at Madison Square Garden before being charged with assault.

Thomas Frampton, 21, a straight-A student and son of a prominent attorney, allegedly approached and spewed anti-war messages at Cheney after dressing up as a GOP supporter and using false credentials to get into the Garden, officials said.

Frampton, who was released on $50,000 bail, is a prominent Yale activist who has been arrested in the past, a prosecutor said.

He gained notoriety when he was among a group of Yale students who filed charges demanding the university president be fired over his handling of a labor situation at the school.

Additional reporting by Ikimulisa Livingston, Erin Calabrese, Douglas Montero, Andrea Peyser, Carl Campanile, Tatiana Deligiannakis and Angelina Cappiello

Come on! ONE THOUSAND ARRESTS. The BEATING of a Police Officer. It's all HORRIBLE! And what did WE do at their convention?

Your right about how 250-300 is a lot of people, but proportionally to the amount of people that marched, Thats really good......Something like 1%

I dont know this to be fact but im sure that around the same percent of republicans that went to the DNC acted the same way. I could be wrong.

Trust me. It is NOT true. Republicans DID NO SUCH THING, and that's a fact.

You're right--but MANY ACTED IN HORRIBLE WAYS. It was NOT a small percentage--the arrests were (1,000) but many activists did horrible things.

And the Republicans did NOT beat on a police officer. And such things like that are NOT against their Constitutional rights--they can speak freely, but they can't go inside and disrupt the convention and beat a police officer and act in disorderly conduct.
