Not title yet...It just came to my mind one day and I blew off a little steam
"Yes, sir", said Johnson.
He turned around 180 degrees and made a discrete gesture to McCreary, at least as discrete as It could be behind the small fence. McCreary nodded in acknowledgement, swallowing down a dumpling. This was his first real mission.
He looked at Johnson.
He was a veteran. McCreary could see it in his firey eyes, although he was almost 15 metres away.
A sign of impatience came from Johnson, who was waving his a hand a bit. The newbie wiped the sweat and the filth off his face, looking across the dusty field, evaluating the best possible route to the small barricade, just big enough to provide cover for him and three of his men.
"Now or never", said McCreary, running to his cover in a crouched position. Five shots rang out succesively from a fairly far distance. The time of the three seconds after the shots rang out seemed as long as a small eternity. First, he heard a bullet whizzing right past his ear. Then one hit the ground right in front of him, bursting into thousands of sand crystals. That shocked him, but he kept his head sober. The other three hit the building behind him. When he reached the barricade, adrenaline was flushing him and he was clutching his rifle as hard as he could. When his head was clear of the events that have just unfolded in front of him, he heard one of his men calling for a medic.
"Damn, they got me"
McCreary tore the sleeve of the wounded soldier off and checked the wound out.
"You'll be okay, Berg. It's just an abrasion."
So, I'm in a dilemma here. Should I make this science fiction or proceed with a healthy dose of realism?
