Sun Aug 15, 2004 2:43 pm Should DS9 Should have been a Starship? |
|
TOS, TNG, VOY, ENT are all based on Starships and not on space stations like Deep Space Nine. Do you think the show would have been worse or better if it was set also on a ship and not on a station?

No, we had too many ships. I like starbases better anyways. The show would lose something if it was another ship. Besides for all those people who bitch that them not moving was no fun, they got the Defiant.

What do you mean about the Defiant? I thought that the Defiant was part of season one.

The Defiant is under the command of Worf correct? I know Sisko out ranks him But i';ve seen that Worf has been in command a lot. Is the Defiant Worf's ship?

No its under the command of Sisko. Sisko lets Worf take command of the ship when he isn't on it because Worf is the second highest ranking officer on DS9, besides Kira, but she isn't in Starfleet. The ship wasn't made for Worf though.

Not off topic if you think about it.
I think it would be up to Sisko who was in command or depending on the mission.

Kira isn't starfleet, I don't know how she could get command of the Defiant without a rank. T'Pol in Enterprise took command of Enterpise a few times, but she was given First Officer of NX-01 by Admiral ????. Kira was never given First Officer Of Defiant by an Admiral.

She is a liason to Starfleet though from the Bajorans. She is like an "unofficial" member of Starfleet. Although in one episode she was given a Starfleet commision. But back to the Defiant thing, she does have the right to comamnd it because A.Sisko can allow that and B.because it is DS9's ship.

Deep Space Nine was a great show, and I think that the producers made a great choice by setting it on a station. It really turned Star Trek around, because up until now the only thing stable was the ship itself, which changed locations periodically. If you think about it, Deep Space Nine was the one series which definitively established the geography and politics of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. We figured out that Bajor was very close to Cardassia, learned about wormholes . . . great stuff.
In Sisko's absence, Kira gets command of DS9 because it is a Bajoran/Federation station. On the Defiant I think it depends on who is in command of the mission. Usually we see Kira, because Worf is too busy firing the weapons.
In First Contact Worf had command of the Defiant because he needed to get to the Enterprise somehow. They always manage to bring him onboard . . .
At the end of DS9 though, Worf became the Federation Ambassador to Qo'nos.

Worf is somehow back in Starfleet on Picard's crew after Star Trek: Nemesis

I don't think he left Starfleet. I think he is a lisason to the Klingon empire from the Federation.

He served on the Klingon High Command if I am correct. IN onr of the TNG Episodes where Picard was shifting though time to the past, present and furut, it showed Worf at the head of the Empire. He would have to be out of Starfleet that way.

Indeed. Like I said above, Worf became a diplomat, but he didn't leave Starfleet. He was in Nemesis because he's still part of the TNG crew, so they made him attend the wedding. Just because you're a diplomat doesn't mean you leave Starfleet.

Heh why thank you C99.
Know one really knows any of their futures. ST.com woyld write one thing and then later contradict it in the show,ENT, or movie.

I personally think it would been worse. I loved the change to a spacestation and I don't think the plot would have been as intricate as DS9's was if it was just another series on a starship.

And I respect the writers for putting the show on an immobile station and still get the plots going. For example: Voyager and TNG cruise around the vastness of space and, logically, they bump into things and make plots out of it. But in DS9, writers had to ponder more about the plots, they had to "compose" them, like artists, and that's what so beautiful about DS9.

Well, there *are* a number of novels that deal with everyone (including Worf) after DS9. They're called the DS9 Relaunch, and they have to be read in order, because like the show, they've got continuity between them (not to mention new characters).
The "core" DS9 Relaunch titles are:
Avatar, Book 1
Avatar, Book 2
Section 31: Abyss
Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness
Mission Gamma: Twilight
Mission Gamma: This Grey Spirit
Mission Gamma: Cathedral
Mission Gamma: Lesser Evil
Rising Son
Unity (the so-called season 8 finale)
Worlds of Deep Space Nine: Cardassia & Andor
Some additional, related books you might also check out are:
A Stitch in Time (Garak's Autobiography)
The Lives of Dax
SCE: Cold Fusion (Set between Avatar and Abyss)
However, since Worf isn't on DS9 for most of that, those of you who are curious about him should read:
Diplomatic Implausibility
The Left Hand of Destiny, Book 2
The Left Hand of Destiny, Book 2
IKS Gorkon #1: A Good Day to Die
IKS Gorkon #2: Honor Bound
Ambassador Worf also plays a central role in Genesis Force.
