Why is NATO still around? NATO was created to counter act the Soviet threat, but therereally is no more soviet threat. Even former Warsaw Pact countries have joined NATO and there has been talk about Russia joining as well. So i ask you, what is the point, does the world need another UN?
What is its purpose?

Well, NATO has always been much more militaristic than the UN, it was made for defense perhaps while the UN is more for global coordination.
Besides, if they merged NATO with the UN, they'd be wasting those thousands of pre-printed forms which say "NATO" on them.

Isn't NATO the organization with all the European nations united? No, I wouldn't say that it should go away. If they want to disband it and kinda merge those countries into the UN, they could do that I guess. Im sure they have their reasons for keeping it around.

NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
I think you're thinking of the European Union. NATO is a military defense body while the EU is an economic body.

Yes. Although I don't really know much about NATO's current activities, except that they are helping to reestablish security in Iraq, which is a good thing. But like any organization that has been around for so long, it needs to critically analyze itself and probably rework a lot of its structure in order to keep functioning on the global stage.

Probably because they might actually deside on something, unlike the UN, Also I guess the countries are more close together than the UN.

ya all of this is true but NATO dosent really have a purpose. It was created as a defence for the cold war against Russia. Its not really needed anymore.

Agent SMITH: Mr. NATO . . . surprised to see me?
NATO: Not really.
Agent SMITH: Why do you continue to fight, Mr. NATO? Why do you persist? There is no purpose . . . I will win. ::jabs hand into NATO::
Like I said, we keep NATO around because of all those forms that would go to waste.

Could be-e, but I think a more logical reason is that it is used to pass information from one country to the other countries that are part of NATO. This would be important in this time when terrorism is the main world threat.
