PostMon Apr 26, 2004 5:24 pm    Are You Godmoding? Got questions? We got answers.

Are you God Moding?

Here's a quick guide to the no no's of roleplaying, specifically on God-moding/Power Playing.

1. You cannot assume someone is weaker then you.

So if you're in a fight, and you're attacking their ship don't assume that you can blow them up in one hit.

Or if you're in a battle of the wits, don't assume their character won't be able to figure out the problem.

2. If they start talking about their thought, but they say their face shows nothing. You can't tell what they are thinking, unless they state that they are not good at hiding their thoughts. Or you're telepathic.

So, Kimie is:

Quote:
Joey walks down the dark road, it's scary. However she wears a mask of calmness. On the outside it looks like she's standing tall, unafraid. But on the inside she's shivering

A correct reply would be:

Quote:
Jack was amazed at how calm Joey seemed. They were walking the Trail of Blood. Shaking his head he said, "How come you aren't afraid?"

And incorrect post would be:

Quote:
She could tell that Joey was so afraid so she turned and said, "I know you're afraid just stop trying to pretend."

There are exemptions to this rule, if your characters have known each other their entire lives. And would know when the other is faking, they might know. Or if your character is telepathic/empathic.

3. Don't assume you know how someone will react.

This rule is pretty simple, when you're roleplaying and you do something. Don't assume you know how they will react. You might grab their hand, and think they'd pull away. When they might take your hand back.

4. Don't write their reactions.

Again this is pretty simple, don't write another players reaction. Say you've taken their hand, well just write that down. Don't write down that then pulled away, when they wanted to take your other hand.

5. You don't know everything.

Example one:

Quote:
April snuck into the small house quietly, managing to pick the lock without making a sound. Slowly opening the door so it wouldn't creak. One bored made a sound, but that could be just the house making sounds in the night. No one should know they were there.

A correct reply:
Quote:
He heard a creaking, it spooked him but he calmed down. It was probably just the house moving in the wind. He closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

An incorrect reply:
Quote:
"I CAUGHT YOU! MAHAHAHAH!!11one" The leaped from his bed and ran to the front door. It was obvious where she was. Anyone would know.

Example two
Quote:
She was hiding the fact that she was from the Orin family. Not a single person knew. Any who had found out had been killed, she made sure of this. There was no way anyone could ever find out. She smiled her plans were coming into play. She would take control and then announce her family lineage.

A correct reply
Quote:
He had no idea his betrothed was from the Orin family, the most hated criminals in the world. Soon they would be married and she'd have control of the empire. Little did he know that would start a reign of terror like no other.

An incorrect reply
Quote:
"I know how you are! You ***** Orin! I shall slay you here and now!" He screeched at her, drawing his sword and killing her.

Example three
Quote:
Jessica hadn't told anyone where she was going. She sighed a little and then walked into the club, her appearance changed radically. No one would recognize her, nor find her ever again.

A correct reply
Quote:
He couldn't find her anywhere, he had checked all of the clubs in town. However; he could not find her anywhere. Defeated he went back to his home and sobbed.

An incorrect reply
Quote:
"I FOUND YOU!!!1111one" He shouted at her, grabbing her arm and pulling her from the club. Dragging her down the street to their home. Ranting at her the whole time.

Example four
You're character can't be all knowing, and a super-genius unless stated before hand. (This goes along with the sixth rule, but should go here anyway.)
Quote:
ooc: Okay.. my character specializes in.. Engineering.
Ic: Jack walked down the hall, looking for someone to talk to.

Quote:
ooc: Okay my guys a sick artist. He's got Ninthialist.
ic: Tom is hanging from the all, blood trailing down his chin.

Quote:
Jack rushes over to him and grabs him. Shouting, "Quick he's got Ninthialist!" He rushes him to his home and starts to treat him.

Quote:
ooc: ...I thought he was an engineer..? How does he know what he's got?

Quote:
ooc: He majored in medical.. after the engineering..

6. Disclaimer. AKA the rule about superpowers.

Say, you haven't said anything about having an immunity to Lightning, and someone's got a speciality in lightning. If they got to attack you, you can't suddenly be immune. Just doesn't work. It's not fair.

Example
Quote:
ooc: Okay so.. My chara is a normal guy, only he's can liek,.. move things with his mind. M'kay?
IC: Jackson dashes down the road, running from someone who is chasing him.

Quote:
ooc: Okay.. My character has the ability to shot lightning! Go Zeus power! Mwhaha.
Ic: Tom sees Jackson is getting away, so he shots a ball of lightning at his back to stop him.

Quote:
"I have immunity to Lightning foo!" Jackson shouts and absorbs the lightning, then runs off and gets away into the night.

Quote:
ooc: HWT? You said he didn't have anything unnormal but being able to move things?

Quote:
ooc: Well now he's got an immunity to lightning too!

See how annoying that is?

7. Have a set understanding of your character.
IE. When you start a roleplay think about your character a little. They don't have to be completely developed, but know what they can or can't do. It's not fair when they're all powerful. And it's really annoying when at one moment their bawling because some guy they didn't know was killed. And the next their laughing because their best friend died.

Example
Quote:
ooc: I'm gonna play a borg!
ic: "I'm the borg! I'll assimilate you!" The drone stated, it glared a moment and then inturned, "Resisting us is futile, prepare to be assimilated.

Quote:
ooc: Borg don't use contractions.. Or speak in single tense..

Quote:
ooc: Well mine does!

8. All Powerful Beings From Heaven/Hell/The Gamma Quadrant/The Que
Should pretty much be common sense, but unless you've stated before hand, you're character can't be all powerful. Don't be a normal human/klingon/whatever and then suddenly be a Que. It doesn't work. And it's very unfair to everyone else.

9. Spilties..
It's doubtful that your character can be in two places at once. So you can't make you character be on the bridge, and in engineering at the same time. Also, if you're crying in one conversation you can't be laughing joyous in the other.

Example
Quote:
"WWHYYY!!!?!?!?!" She sobbed, sniffling and rubbing at her running nose.

Quote:
"It'll be okay Jessica.." Tom told her softly, rubbing her back.

Quote:
That is SO funny! MWHAHAHA." Jessica said to Jack who had told her a joke. Then she turned back to Tom and sobbing on his shoulder.

((More will be added.))

((Thanks to my tutor, and B'Ellanna_Torrez, for helping me come up with the examples and rules.))

Heheh. ^^ You're welcome, I'll add more in a bit. But dad wants to try out a new monitor. (And he's getting annoyed. Impaitent. X< )

I've been roleplaying for about five years now. And the first place I roleplayed on a forum had a clear outline of God-Modding for people. ^^

And as I've been God-modded so much here, I figured I'd put up a little guide to it. Often times it's unintentional.

Anyways more will be added, and give a thanks to my tutor, 'cause she's roleplayed longer then me and is giving me suggestions via IM. XD

As my stance of an active RPGER and Vetrian of these forums I agree and this may be added to the guide.

^^ Ummn.. Go ahead, I guess. ^^;; But I'm going to be updating this everytime I come across something else that's considered God-Modding. It's been happening a lot to me.. And I got a little mad. When it's not really alot of people's thought. It's unintentional.

The forum I was on before this was strictly roleplay, and was VERY strict in their roles. (Darn that's terrible grammar.. Miz'd kill me..) You had to pass a certain level of RPing to actually get into the forum. Until you got up-graded, you were a newcomer and were banned to that area. Which you couldn't post anywhere else in the forum.

It might seem a little mean, but it does keep out the God-Modders and Power-players. :) It also taught me alot.

I agree it should also, I have been a active roleplayer on many sites for about 5 years now myself. And this site needs a reminder of what godmodding is that is on hand 24/7 because of how many new people join each day.

not just new players do it though, old player with deep set characters can sometimes become egocentric and think their character is now "Rambo".

This is inforamtive and should be read by all.

Also, I'd also like to make this into a thread you can ask questions about. If you're not sure whether or not something is God-modding, feel free to ask.

If you don't know for sure is something is powerplaying, also go ahead and post the question. I'll most likely add it to the first page. But I'll also answer you. :)

Would you consider this as godmodding? I think it is.

Quote:
*The Captain took his seat next to Esel. Esel had a worried look on his face.*

Udas: Commander? Something wrong?

Esel: Yes sir. Something that has been concerning me.....

Udas: Yes?

Esel: I know about the Changeling's rule of never attacking another. I was wondering.....

Udas: If it came down to it, would I do it?

Esel: Yes sir.

Udas: I've gone over this with Starfleet Command already. They had the same fear as you. That I would rather fail the mission and let my crew die than attack one of my own. You know what? They're wrong. I am a Changeling but im also a Starefleet officer. Im that first over anything. I wont lie to you. Im going to go to great lengths to NOT kill my people, or anyone for that matter. I learned something from Odo. We are striving for peace and exploration now. There is no more reason to hate and kill the solids. I disliked them at one time, but I didn't realize that EVERY solid is not like that. To answer your question Commander. I will do what I must....

*Esel was shocked at his answer. This did not sound like a butcher of Lakarian City. Irnoically Changelings don't have hearts but this one sounded like he did. He began to feel ashamed for the way he felt towards him. Although Esel wouldn't let his guard down. He opened his mouth to say something else.*

Helm: We are approaching the Founder's homeworld sir.

OPS: There is one Federation ship in the sector and several "friendly" Dominion ships.

Esel: Federation ship?

OPS: An Ambassdaor class ship sir. The USS Ally.

Udas: They are carrying the ambassador from the Federation to my world.

Esel: Your orders Captain?

Thats not godmodding! How many times do I have to tell you? I did not make one important decision for your charecter did I? I spoke for your charecter ONE time! He/She didn't even say anything important! I was doing it to make the story move along. According to the person who made that RPG that is acceptable. I just checked the RPG and you didn't post for 3 or 4 pages. Are we supposed to wait days for your one sentence response of "Aye sir, course plotted." or "we are approaching the Founder's homeworld sir."?

For god sake i didn't bother cuz you would have said my part anyway! How am i supposed to play my part in a ROLE PLAYING GAME if someone else says it for me. it not a lets let someone talk for us game! what is the *beep* point of being in an RPG if you can't *beep* say anything cuz someone is so ignorant and impatient!

First of all, you need to calm down. Its just an RPG, you don't need to call anyone "impatient or ignorant". The RPG would die if we sat in orbit of Earth for 3 or 4 pages because you won't post. Don't give me that "you didn't post because I posted for you" stuff anyways. The only thing I ever made your char. say is "course plotted" or " we've' arrived" etc. etc. You can still say so much more or was that all you were planning on saying?

It's my place to say *beep* like that not yours. You see it is actually nice to be involved in an RPG when ur in it.

((By the way it Kool when you swear in a post it automatically beeps it out ))

No, its ALL of our places to keep the RPG going and active. Every RPG would be slow and every post would be boring and uneventful because we have to sit and wait for someone to say a one liner. If you made posts that were like a page long sure, but not one line. Im sorry but you don't post for 3 pages? If we had waited for you, we would still be in the alpha quadrant waiting to go into the gamma quadrant. People would begin to lose interest.

DON'T *beep* POST FOR 3 *beep* PAGES!!!! WHAT THE *beep* ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT BITCH! i joined last night when it was on page 10 and oh look it's STILL on page 10. By the way it's not YOUR choice to move the RPG along and to leave everyone out! if you have a plot then you should just say in private what you want to happen not take over there character so you get what YOU want!

I didn't know you just joined last night, If thats the case I can't believe an argument came out of me speaking for your charecter one time and you are bending over backwards in anger over it. How do you move a plot along without everyone else? Im not making new plots BTW, im just continuing the one that micthe torres made. Its a little hard to get to where we're going if im bymyself on the ship isn't it? What do you want me to do put....

*Esel orders the ship to head to the homeworld. It does. Esel orders someone to beam them down. They do. Esel is beamed down with someone. The someone doesn't talk.*

Wow how interesting.

No you just put

"Helm set a course for the homeowrld maximum warp"

A few hours later the ship arrives at the home world and enters a standard orbit.

(Whoever and you) leave the brige and enter turbo lift.

("Deck whatever")

They leave the turno lift and enter the transporter room where they beam down to the surface etc etc...see not godmodding and it's still nice and long seing as you lime to make long posts.

as simple as that.

Ok did you see how their is no difference? My post is the exact same thing. The only thing I add is dialouge that make it more interesting, just fun stuff.

Quote:

Not that big a deal is it? See how insignificant the difference is?

No matter how significant you still did it. You have gotten rid of the need for a helm officer. but instead of saying what you usually do just alter it so you don't godmod. Cuz i REALLY annoys me!
