Aides: White House to Project Record Deficit

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

WASHINGTON The White House will project soon that this year's federal deficit (search) will exceed $420 billion, congressional aides said, a record figure certain to ignite partisan warfare over President Bush's handling of the economy.

The annual summertime analysis is expected out this Friday, said several congressional aides speaking on condition of anonymity Tuesday. That would be well after the frequently ignored legal deadline of July 15.

White House budget office spokesman Chad Kolton said the report will be issued when it is ready, and offered no date. Friday will be a day after the Democratic National Convention (search) ends a release date that would prevent presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., (search ) and others at the gathering from citing its figures to criticize Bush.

Some aides said they believed the projected shortfall would be close to $450 billion, though one said it would be about $420 billion.

Either way, the White House was ready to emphasize that the figure is well below the $521 billion it projected for this year last February, and tie it to improvements in the economy.

"It is hard to disregard the strong progress made on the economy and our fiscal situation," Kolton said Tuesday.

Democrats have said Bush purposely overestimated this year's budget gap so he could take credit for improvement when the real figures came in.

"The new estimate ... will set a new record of fiscal mismanagement and deficit spending," said Kerry economic adviser Gene Sperling.

The federal budget year runs through Sept. 30 and has only two months to go.

Last year's deficit was $375 billion, the worst ever in dollar terms. The White House has said the numbers are manageable because they only equal about 4 percent the size of the U.S. economy well below the 6 percent ratio reached under President Reagan.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (search ) projected in January that this year's shortfall would be $477 billion. In May, citing higher than expected revenue collections, it said it believed the red ink would be smaller but offered no figure.

Two weeks ago, the Treasury Department (search ) said the deficit for the first nine months of this budget year was $327 billion. That was more than 20 percent larger than the $270 billion shortfall for the same period last year.

This is something that I'm upset at Bush for. However, with the War on Terror and the War in Iraq, much money must be spent.

However, what better will Kerry do aside from raise taxes and spend more.

I agree with Universal Health Care There again, I live in a country with it, and have it to thank for a lot of things, such as being able to use my right arm properly. The medical bills my family would have had if it hadn't been for the NHS would be several thousand pounds.

It would help if someone, Bush, or if elected, Kerry, would put together a agency to monitor where government money goes and how it is used. Did you know at one time, either the Department of Agriculture, or Education(I can't remember which) did not have any idea as to where $5 million were? They had not the slightest idea....like it had just vanished. It is waste and sloppiness like this contribute to alot of the problem.[/b]

That was not a bashing. That was saying two things about him.

Although I agree with some of it, that is basically bashing of Kerry.

I know, just calm down...

We don't want to sink down to the level of Liberals (No, I am NOT stereotyping here. That is the common Liberal. You don't see it at the convention this week because it's the "Reinvention Convention" because the Democrats are trying to change themselves for the Convention for political gain.)

Wow, if I may say something.... You seemed to have just "sunk down to their level" just now by making that statement. It was rude.

(and I'm not saying that liberals are any better or any worse than conservatives)

I did NOT say that they were BELOW me.
What I meant by "sunk down to their level" was that they have been spilling propaganda, etc. and that's what they do.
They do what their leaders have done:
"He lied." Ted Kennedy
"He concocted this war in Texas." Ted Kennedy
"He betrayed this country! He played on our fears!" Al Gore
"President Bush has been targeting innocent civilians." Dennis Kucinich
"President Bush knew about 9/11 before it happened and did nothing." Howard Dean.

And of course, although it's on a lower scale, what Defiant has said and done.

Wouldn't that imply that they were below you, if you had to "sink down"? But anyway, let's just move on. Back on topic,

No, it does NOT mean that they are below me. You just don't get the fraze, but anyway, as you said, back on topic...

*phrase

Does anyone know if Bush mentioned how he intends to get us out, if not lower the deficit, if he's reelected?

I've heard it in speeches. His economic plan, which you can view at www.georgewbush.com, will cut the deficit in 5 years (because it's supposed to be a 1 Trillion Dollar Deficit). There are other ways to get money than Taxes.
