Why do you have such a desire to be taller, It can sometimes lead to medical problems, anywho. Not to mention it really isn't all that it's cranked up to be....

By looking at the numbers, it might be true that Americans are taller than the British. But I cant really say because I'm neither Britsh nor American.

Syd, visit www.whitehousekids.gov and go onto History, than Presidents. Search and you will see that nearly all of The American Presidents were 6'0 or even 5'11 or something lol.
Thanks sims.

i remember studying something about height and all in one of my highschool classes. It might've been health. Anyways, I think that lifestyle does indeed have a role to play - like someone else had stated earlier. I know in the US atleast, I have many many guy friends and such that surpass the height of both their parents. From what I learned in school, some some of it has to do with the amount of food people eat. Unlike other countires, the USA's portions of food are much larger than that in other countires. I've heard from many people from different countries that have visted here comment about how they couldn't believe how much food was being served for one person at restraunts and such. We here in the usa have become acustomed to that. You know, eatting more food can work both ways - it can make people fatter, but why couldn't it make people taller too?! Here's a fact I found on a website that you all may find interesting:
Quote:
Over the last 150 years the average height of people in industrialised nations increased by 10 cm (4 in). In the 19th century, American men were the tallest in the world, averaging 1,71m (5'6"). Today, the average height for American men is 1,75m (5'7"), compared to 1,77 (5'8") for Swedes, and 1,78 (5'8.5") for the Dutch. The tallest nation in the world is the Watusis of Burundi.
This is a true fact that is posted on many websites if you do a search. Interesting huh - i guess lifestyle definetly plays a role then!!

Yes that is indeed true but still, I think when it comes to the situation, the majority of English people are smaller than American people. Sure, you might get your 5'1's but it's pretty rare in America where as here, it is common.

Also, it is said that during The Second World War, an American Soldier could look above a Japanese Soldier with ease. However, an English Soldier could look a Japanese Soldier directly in the eyes, which means that in a way, we were a similar height.

I can no longer stand up straight. It's a combination of poor posture (trying to make myself appear shorter) and weak muscles in my back. I'm a hunchback!

Hasn't anyone thought of the fact that the United States is a melting pot? There are people from practically every country in the world I bet, we have many different genes in us. You can't base it soley on all that. That's one reason we have such a tall height average.

I'm 5'9, my mom is 5'1, my dad is 5'10, my grampa *dad's side* is 5'6 and my gramma was like... 4'9. Og course they may have been an inch or 2 taller when they were younger. I hear my great grampa was tall though, wich is why me and my dad are. We're american by the way, however my grampa's family came here from Italy and my gramma was german/czech in origin. I don't know about my mom's family...

Anyways, average height for a female in America is about 5'6. I'm thinking it's 5'10 for a guy. Women 5'8 and men 6' and up are considered to be "tall". So technically I'm the only "tall" person in my family

Seriously though, how many americans around now are descended fromt he original english colonists? Probably not a lot, at least not purely. People keep imigrating to America. We're all mutts now What's the specific average height in england?

well, i'm 6'5, my brothers are 6'5, 6'3, and 6'0. my dad is 6'4, my dads mom was about 6'0 (she was scot-irish) and my dad's dad was about 6'0 (full german) my moms dad is about 6'2, and her mom is about 5'6. so, i've got tallness from my dad and partially from my mom's side. my dad's cousin's son is about 6'7, his aunt is short but his cousin is about 5'9 (female) so it mainly comes from his mom's side, which takes us back to the england area. back in the day the scots and irish were mainly farmers, so i guess it is the farmer idea that you have.
