PostSat Jul 10, 2004 6:45 pm    Will you be seeing the Catwoman movie?

Back in 1992, shortly after Batman Returns was released, there were plans for Michelle Pfeiffer to return as Catwoman in her own solo movie. As is often the case with good movie ideas, the whole thing remained in limbo.

Until now. Very shortly, a new Catwoman movie will be released. I am sure a lot of you are familiar with the new movie and it's plot.

Now, I believe you should give 99.9% of films a chance before making a judgement. However, 1% of films are worthy of derision before they are released. Sometimes, the public is just right in condemning a movie because we have often been right.

Why am I condemning the Catwoman movie before it's been released? Well, there are various reasons.

I respect the character and have always found her a complex character in the Batman universe. One of my favourite issues of all time is Batman #323 from 1980 where Batman and Catwoman team up to take on a bigger threat. I have followed her for a long time.

But this movie seems to have changed everything. I accept that changes need to be made sometimes (even the Spidey movie had a few changes) but they seem to have changed everything.

The Catwoman I know is Selina Kyle. In the movie, she's called Patience Price. In the comics, Catwoman was a lady who had peak physical perfection and amazing agility. In the movie, she will have supernatural powers and will have returned from the dead. There seem to be many needless changes. As much as I like Halle Berry, I can't help but think this movie will be a turkey.

It seems to be Catwoman in name only. Everything else has been changed from the character's real name to the origin to the core concept. They may as well have given a different name to the movie. But I guess they know the name Catwoman will sell the movie.

If I'm wrong and the movie is good, I shall say so on this very forum. But I have bad feelings about it. What do you all think?

To answer your question whether or not I'm going to see it, the answer is most probably 'yes'.

I don't know much about the movie and I've only seen one trailer. But it does apeal to me. I've always liked movies like this, the Batman genre, Superman, X-Men, ... I think it's going to be fun. Also, I haven't read any of the original comics of any of these story lines so I can't judge whether or not the movie will stick to the original plot and such.

Do I think Halle Berry will do a good job? I think so. She"s a very good actress and I think she'll do fine.

P.S.: When I've seen the movie, I'll post my objective opinion here... I'll be back!

Though I want to see the movie, I along with my friends will not go and see a movie that decimates the original.

This new Catwoman movie has too many changes from the original story.

I have nothing against going to see it, so if my friends go, I'll probably go. It doesn't bother me, that they changed a comic around for a movie, Halle Berry is an excellent actress.

If nobody else goes, though, I probably won't go to see it just for the heck of it. Might as well just wait to rent it.

That's my point.

The Spider-Man movie made a few minor changes to make it appeal to a modern audience. But the core concept was there. Peter Parker was still shy and a bit of a nerd. Uncle Ben still died. Parker's responsibilities weighed heavily on him.

But I just can't abide the changes made to the character. I feel it is an attempt to sell a movie using the name of a character who I think has been around since 1940.

I can accept minor changes in movies but not loads of big changes.

Good examples of minor changes include The Joker's origin in the 1989 Batman movie. I kind of liked it the way they have it turn out that The Joker had killed Bruce Wayne's parents.

Another good example was the 2003 Hulk movie. Whilst I wasn't the biggest fan of that movie, I liked the way they changed the origin slightly. Gamma radiation was still involved but Banner didn't actually build a gamma bomb in the movie like he did in the comic.

It's all about balance. By all means, change a few things around when translating a character to the big screen, modernise it a little but don't go changing everything from the character's real name to their origin.

Superhero films are hit and miss. Sometimes, perfection is achieved as I personally believe was the case with Superman The Movie and X-Men. Other times we get something poor such as Judge Dredd or Captain America.

I'll probably go see it. I usually go see movies on account of not having anything else to do and it will end up being the only one I haven't seen.

As for story changes, I don't know too much about Catwoman... other than they probably chose Hallie Berrie to base her off the original original Catwoman who was played by Eartha Kitt.

so *shrug* I don't know. It doesn't look that good but I'll probably see it

Catwoman is making just about every mistake its possible for a movie to make. I expect there will be a a great deal of confusion in the movie industry as to why this film will flop, but to me its perfectly obvious.....

I think they're trying to just market Halle Barry...and that's where they've gone wrong. They've totally destroyed the original plot because they think that since there's one hot chick in the movie that no one will care and will just show up to see some skimpy pleather costumes. I don't like cat women being portrayed as a dominatrice...its like you said she has peak physical perfection and amazing agility...not all that bs. Eh...I ramble a lot...that's my rambling on this.

Oh and most likely I won't see it...I'm sure I could find something better. I,Robot looks pretty interesting...reminds me a bunch of the animatrix though...anyone else agree?

I hate Will Smith.

And yes, putting Halle Berry in leather is definetly marketing her.

I would say no

The outfit of Catwoman is just horrible.

I really dont like the movie it is just "the hot chick Halle Berry wearing a leather outfit"

I will say 80% of the people watching it will watch it because they like Halle Berry not because they like the movie.

"This movie might become another "Battlefield Earth" "A Total Failure At The Box Office"
