Obesity concerns bringing changes

Restraurants are getting more health-conscious when it comes to their youngest customers.

The traditional kids' menu at causal restraurants- replete for years with burgers, french fries, and fried chicken strips- is expanding to include steamed broccoli. black beans, and rice, and grilled chicken.

The trend is a clear response to the growing concern about childrenhood obesity. An estimated 20% to 30% of kids are overweight or at risk of becoming so.

A few of the biggest causal dining chains already are dishing out the healtier foods. Others plan to roll them out by summer. Restraurants changing course include:

Applebee's will offer a grill chicken sandwich and pasta with marinara sauce as a new main courses for children beginining June 21st. New side dishes: steamed broccoli, carrots, and celery with ranch dressing, applesauce.

Beginning June 15th Ruby Tuesday's will offer kids a turkey dinner with broccoli and mashed potatoes, a turkey-cheese quesadilla, with marinara sauce, and a cheeseburger wrapped in a whole grain tortilla and served with broccoli and no french fries will be listed.

We learned very quickly the minute you mention' healthy,' the parents gets all excited and the kids look skeptical,'' says Vivian Deuschl, a spokeswoman for the Ritz Carlton Hotels and Resorts, whose restraurants in May unveil new healthy alternatives.

I want my kids to eat proper but that is a little bit much. Let kids be kids.
Not all to me is overweight. My kids can anything and not gain anything cause they are growing alot and they stay active.

I cook healhty but also got to add fun into or they are not going to eat it.

Yeah, there's also a growing concern here about fatness, especially for kids. It was highlighted when a 3 year old child died because of it. When they died they weighed 6lb. That's when most 13 year olds are about 7lb!

This has been a huge debate here in Belgium. It's a fact that children in Belgium are becoming too fat. 40% of the children are in overweight; 50% of the grown-ups.

We don't eat right anymore, more fast food junk and things like that. Chocolates and candy bars... We don't do enough sports either.

I'm glad to say I'm doing just fine I don't eat all that junk, no candy, no soda. I eat vegtables every day and drink water, plain water without any gas. My parents insisted on this when I was younger and now I can't drink anything else with my food. Thanks Mom and Dad! *kiss*

*shrugs* I think it's a good thing. It's not like the kids can't have fried food and all the rest, it's just that they're offering another option...a much better option... As long as this crusade against obesity isn't taking away choices and becoming overly controlling, I say more power to 'em. I'm VERY glad they're offering healthier choices in restraunts, myself, 'specially for kids.

Jeez...

This is getting ridiculous. Restaurants shouldn't be concerned with obesity. it's not their responsibility.

All this comes at the cost of those who can controll themselves/their kids.

At the...cost? What cost is it to those who want to eat poison? (Poison being fried foods and sugar) It's no cost but an extra item on the menu. There's a market for healthy food, the restraunts make a profit doing this; what's wrong with that? It's not any different than offering vegetarian dishes for those who do not eat meat. I have a hard time seeing the problem with a few healthy choices. OH NO! THE CARROTS ARE COMING TO GET US!

It's a good idea, having healthy options for kids. I've never been overweight, nor have my siblings, but for us fried foods and sweets were a special treat when we were kids.

(BTW Jeremy, the 3 year old weighed 6 stone, not 6lbs The normal weight for a three year old is around 2st 4lbs.)

PEOPLE can make healthy choices. Corporations don't have to shove it down their throat.

If i'm going to McDonald's I want lard, not broccoli. In moderation, almost nothing is bad for you (fatty food is actually good for you used sparsely). If some people can't controll themselves, that's their fault. Corporations should not be expected to give healthy options, they're alread there. Eat at McDonald's or don't.

I don't see why it would bother anyone to see a salad on the menu. Who's it really hurting, I say? Nobody I know. Again, if corporations make money this way; good on 'em!

Nothing is bad for you--THAT is not so. I've studied naturopathic medicine for over six years, I know what I mean when I say sugar and fried foods are poison. FAT is okay; i.e. in meats and such--butter is okay, too. Fried foods, margarine--THESE are NOT good for anyone in any quantity.

I have high blood pressure so for me I have to watch what I eat. I constantly have to take my Ramapril blood pressure meds twice a day. I am not that heavy weight anymore since I cut back. Yeah I want my kids to be healthy but if I go to McDonalds every once in a while I don't think it would hurt my kids. Cause we don't go but once a month.

I cook at home so they get vegetables and what they need at home.

Myself cant have salt and certain other things.

*sighs* I hate to get into the salt thing, but...I would reccomend looking at a few alternatives to that, as there are some flaws with the salt theory...as well as a few others...I don't want to offend anyone, but if you're interested in alternatives, I would highly reccomend getting acquainted with Dr. Joel Wallach, naturopathic expert...

http://www.wallachonline.com/athletes.htm

And I'll leave it at that, 'cause I would hate to start a huge argument.

Yeah, I just realised that I had made a mistake this afternoon! I was like, oops, did pounds instead of stone.

Going back to the main topic I think that a little fatty foods, salts etc is ok, and actually good for you but you shouldn't have it in excess. A bit obvious, but it's true. Generally diets aren't any good because people lose weight really quickly at first because it's water thats used up. This means a big weight loss, but not really any fat used up. You have to keep going in the diet if you want to get slimmer, and most people stop before that point.

You're calling fried foods and sugar poison?? Yah, fried foods are fattening, but POISON? That's just a bit more than excessive. I think everyone who goes on about the evil of sugar is insane. Sugar has calories and when consumed in excess it can cause weight gain, and when one does not brush their teeth it can cause dental problems, cavities, etc but other than that... it's just a food. Pasta has more calories than soda. Get over it. Eat one scoop of ice cream or one soda, it's fine. Just don't drink a whole 2 liter or half gallon in a day. You also realize there are light versions of many deserts. Sugar is not the culprit. Sugar is your friend. Trust sugar.

CALORIES? Heh, I'm not talkin' calories here; far from it. I'm talking long-term medical data and over-all well-being.

Fried foods are more than fattening. Ever read about free radicals? What those DO to you? Fried foods are the only things that actually make cholesterol an enemy, you know, by tearing holes in arteries and CAUSING plaque build-up in defense, which ends up detrimental. (Even though it's not as bad as some doctors imply--240-270 in cholesterol is perfectly normal) And soda leeches the minerals from your body, as well as tears holes in the stomach--calories, you say? T'heck with calorie counts, here! Nobody who does NOT supplement gets the allotted amount of minerals per day. NO ONE. You ever look at mineral charts, and how many ABSORBABLE minerals are in our food? Once you're past the age of 25 or so, I believe is the number, you only take in 5-10% of what you eat!!! Do we REALLY need to leech the minerals from our bodies? I think not. I love soda a lot, but I'm trying to get off of it entirely...would be easier if I didn't have a slight addiction to caffine, and I won't even begin to go into all caffine does to you...

As for sugar. Sugar is very bad for you, period; more specifically, processed sugar. Goes for breads too. Are there ANY good points to eating bread or sugar? You get hardly ANY quantifiably good nutritional value from either. And think about how much sugar we consume. The average American consumes POUNDS upon POUNDS of sugar each year, when back in pioneer days, it wasn't NEARLY so much, and what have we now? Arthritis, heart diseases, rampant cancer, behavioral disorders in our kids, in gigantic amounts. And then we look at less other nations, who take in quite a bit less, say, the Japanese, and other countries who aren't as into their medical dogmas as we. AMERICA LANKS DEAD LAST IN PREVENTING BIRTH DEFECTS AMONG THE 32 INDUSTRIALIZED NATIONS! SEVENTEENTH IN NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH DEBILATATING DESEASES IN AGE, AND EVEN LOWER IN LONGEVITY!!! And what else do we have? THE HIGHEST COSTING MEDICAL CARE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. What can we say of the people living in Titticaca, using glacial milk to fertilize plants, no sugar, no starch, no fried foods? THEY LIVE ON AVERAGE TO BE OVER 100 YEARS OLD, WITHOUT DOCTORS!

*pants*

Alright, maybe I went off on a tangent. But I know what I'm saying here, there's data to back it up. What people eat today, most of it, is flat-out BAD and does NOTHING to help. If we can give people anything healthy, please, let's let them eat that way, and not make a fuss. It's not hurting anyone, if anything, it's helping; and help, in medicine and our way of life, is something we desperately need.

No one as of yet has explained WHY sugar is bad. But when there's a problem? Oh, blame sugar! I'm not defending sugar as being the best thing or whatever, I just want to know what the big deal is. And no, I've never heard of free radicals. So far I'm none the worse for wear because of it. And what the heck does behavioural problems in kids have to do with sugar? With ANY food at all, mind you? NOTHING. Kids behave badly because A. THEY'RE KIDS and kids have ALWAYS been that way, B. Perhaps there's a problem in the way their parents are raising them and C. The place kids usually behave badly is SCHOOL so perhaps there's a problem with the teachers, staff, other kids, or cirriculum! I, personally, find it utterly and completely rediculous that whenever there's a problem people blame it on sugar and chips!

Sugar is not bad for you.
Without sugar, in one form or another, you die.
