Carmel Fatal Accident Update
(WABI) It's one of the deadliest accidents in Maine's history and state police are still trying to figure out why it happened.

A rented s-u-v crashed on the interstate in Carmel Sunday, killing all seven people inside.

Police say the Ford Explorer, which had been rented at the Portland Jetport earlier in the day, was going in excess of 90 miles per hour when the accident happened.

Witnesses tell police the s-u-v went into the breakdown lane, trying to pass two vehicles on the interstate, but hit one of them, sending the explorer across the highway, flipping into a clump of trees.

Police say the driver was 29-year-old Hope Gagnon, the other victims are her three children, Deion, Tkeyah, and Ariana, 28-year-old Kelley Armstrong and her four year old son Kristian, and 29-year-old Danielle St. Paulin

All were from South Portland.

Police say there were no child seats or booster seats in the s-u-v.

Officials are confident Deion and Danielle were wearing their seatbelts, the rest were not.

The crumpled car is now at the state police crime lab in Augusta.

I know this happened in Maine, but it made the National news, so....

They thought there was only five dead, until they were able to move the SUV. Found 2 more bodies under it. 3 of the kids were under 8 years old.

Was also only a few miles from my house. They don't know why they people in the Explorer were speeding yet.

One 2 year old, two 4 year olds, one 6 year old, and one 8 year old. IMO, that driver is better off dead. Over 100 feet of skidmarks.

SUV= Sport Utility Vehicle

Here is a picture. There are different models, but this will give you the general idea.

SUV's are infamous becuase of how easily they will roll over (there center of gravity is not in a good location) and because of how much gasoline they use.

I agree, it is sad. But... judging from the company held in the car and the children's names... (sorry that sounds mean) but it sounds like the folks in charge weren't very responsible already. Then they're speeding down I highway at 90 mph without their kids even buckled in? There's a reason there's laws..... still, yeah. thats really sad. There was a huge accident at an intersection about 4 blocks from my house the other day that killed one man and injured the other driver (a teenage girl, go figure). The intersection was blocked off each way for two blocks for about three hours because I think since someone died it counted as a crime scene... vehicular manslaughter or something.

It's NOT the SUV's fault...man, if I could only find what Rush Limbaugh had to say last summer, it puts it into a good perspective...

SUV's do tend to not be centered well, except for Hummers. But no one said it was the SUV's fault, only the drivers.
