This, disturbs me. The images in the drawings disturb me, because I don't agree with them. However, the reaction to them disturbs me even more. And makes me sick.

What disturbes you about the reaction? They took the necessary precautions.

This is what it says:
Quote:
SEATTLE - Art students at Prosser High School were told to keep a notebook of drawings depicting the war in Iraq.

One 15-year-old turned in a sketch showing President Bush, dressed as a devil, launching a missile.

Another of his drawings was of a Middle Eastern-looking guy holding a rifle in one hand, while in the other hand was a pole with an oversized head of President Bush stuck on it.

The art teacher found the drawings troubling.

Maybe it was the caption that said: "End the War."

Anyway, the drawings were turned over to school administrators.

School administrators took a look and tossed this political hot potato to police, who took one look at the "Vote For Ralph Nader" slogan and called in the Secret Service.

Last week, Secret Service agents trekked out to Prosser and grilled the 15-year-old artist.

They left without charging him with anything, but that didn't stop the school district from punishing the kid anyway.

So, here's my question: When U.S. forces get finished bringing freedom to the people of Iraq, would it be possible for them to do the same thing for the people of Prosser?

I'm pretty sure there's at least one 15 year old over there who'd appreciate it.

This does not trouble me. I mean, if an artist draws such DISTURBING, HATEFUL pictures of the President, he should be punished...They took the necessary precautions, and since there was a Ralph Nader thing on it, that made things worse...I am NOT troubled by this...although, I guess it is a little extreme, but still.

PS: George Bush is the OPPOSITE of the Devil...

^Wait, wait, wait! Are you talking about being punished for Freedom of Speech? The kid had the right to draw this sketch and no school teacher or police officer should argue otherwise.

The government wasn't punishing him, just the school system.

Yes, there is freedom of speech, but it has to be regulated to some point...I know, I'm a conservative and am for little gov't control, but still...

If he made pictures of the president having been assasinated, of course they are going are to investigate, you can't hold that against anbody. I don't think the school system should have punished him either, but if he drew pictures like that, he could be a danger to other students, as well.

It's incredible that some people are supporting punishing this kid. And President Bush, opposite of the devil? Classic.

To say he is the devil is freedom of speech. Which when you regulate, it you get a society that's completely controlled.

It was his opinions, and his rights to opinions to draw them. The teacher TOLD him to keep a sketch book on his feelings about the war. Then they punished him for them. I find that wrong.

I would have to agree, could they bring back OUR freedom once they've finished over there?

The reaction disturbs me, because it's a violation of Civil Liberty. When a government starts to "regulate" the liberties the constititution gives us the right too, is when it starts to corrupt. And people are opressed, and no longer free.

You know what, I agree...I retract all past statements--it was wrong, and not the right thing to do, but we do live in America...and I don't like communism, and regulating Freedom of Speech beyond indecency standards is bad...You've changed my mind, God-mod hater...

Saying that means your ideals are the same as Saddam Hussein's, to an extent.

They weren't "regulating," they were simply making sure he wasn't an actual threat to the president, or that he wasn't under the influence of anybody who was.

^You also beg to make a legitimate point...

Anyway, the Secret Service would be remiss if they didn't investigate. Especially w/ the pic of the "beheaded" Bush. They are supposed to take any and all threats reported seriously. Some take longer to investigate than others, but if you are that public about it, they'll get to you rather quickly. Hell, there are words that if typed in one IM red flag the SS, and they will check out the whole convo.
I think the teacher overreacted, though.

Maybe they weren't but they are coming very close to it. The efforts they are making for anti-terrism are beginning to scare me. And I make it a policy not to get involved with human Poltics.

The point is that RM didn't only post that one line. Points were made regarding the candidate. It makes for a more interesting convo when there is actual rebuttal instead of, "I disagree", or, "I agree", which are both spam posts, btw. I know we've all occasionally done it, but in WN, we strive for a bit of thinking.

I don't think they should have overreacted the way they did. They told him to write down his feelings from the war. However, it does disturb me the way they reacted, but also I don't know how tough they were in investigating him.

Maybe they weren't tough at all, maybe they were. However, I think it's an encroachment on his poltical freedoms for his school to punish him. I don't think the government, did much wrong. Sorry if I haven't been clear on that.

What I think is wrong, is the way the school reacted. However, I don't wholy agree with the questioning of him.

Ok you say he liberated people from a ruthless dictator? yea and look at the fallout we are losing atleast one ONE solider a day. Because of Bush we are now the most hated nation in the world. Because of Bush and his lack of paying attention to his people my town is now basically nothing but a run down city because no one can get jobs. Bush should be worrying more about his people in the US than what some idiot thinks about us 1,000 miles away. Plus where is the lower gas prices? I think imo that Bush is responsible for the freaking high gas prices. I think that we could get a chimp to do a better job than bush and it would cost less but than the last comments are my opinion.
