It could also have been something to do with the people being massacered by the communists as well. But I see from Iraq and now Vietnam liberals don't care about innocent civillians being killed. I'm not for or against the wars, but the points made by the Republicans are far more convincing than these liberal arguments.

Vietnam was a failed attempt at containment on communism.

I don't like Kerry, I barely like Bush at this point, but seriously, Kerry is a tard.

Interesting. Following Theresa's logic, when someone else breaks the 'rules of war' we compromise our own moral and ethical standards to even the playing field. Eye for an eye right?

American troops certainly do not compromise there ethics.

However when other people do break the rules of war, especially in certain instances it becomes necessary to alter how you fight the war, yes.

That is not at all what I said. I thought I was very clear, but apparently you have trouble reading clearly worded posts, so I'll clarify even further for you.

You are a soldier, fighting in Vietnam. You enter a village full of women and children. Suddenly, you are being shot at from enemy soldiers standing in a crowd of said women and children. What are you supposed to do? Stand there and die? Or better yet, these women and children start firing at you themselves. But again, you aren't going to shoot back. Congratulations on being dead, and also having your position overrun, and your buddies are now dead. Make sure their families know how they died, too.
There is a time when honor ends, and stupidity begins.

I admit the soldiers over in Iraq now are not as strong as the 3rd Id. If you notice when 3RD ID was over there, the iraqis knew not to mess with them cause 3RD ID will put a boot up their A*** 3RD ID fight back and not stupid like the units that over there now. Cause my husband soldiers interview the capture Iraqis. The 3rd id soldier ask '' Why didn't you fire back? The iraqi man said'' Oh we know not to mess with 3RD ID.''
3Rd ID is going back and they will kick some evil butt!

That's bogus. I'm Navy, and even I can say that the US Marines are some of the toughest soldiers out there. And I think the Naval Aviators are pretty damn tough, too. Iraq isn't scared of one Infantry Division. If anything, they are scared by the combined forces. Including the British troops. You dishonor the rest of the troops with that statement.

Ok then, now we place ourselves into hypothetical situations. True, I would expect soldiers to return fire in that situation, however at what point do you draw the line?

But the problem is, it wasn't hypothetical to those men in Vietnam.

Again, very true, but again I ask "At what point do we draw the line?". The reason this concerns me is that it perpetuates a cycle of 'you strike me, I strike back' that potentially will continually escalate. I think Israel and Palestine stands as a good example of this as well as India and Pakistan. We all know that the depths of human depravity may only be exceeded by our capacity to attempt to justify such actions. But for the sake and fabric of our civilization (much less our oft dubious claim of being 'civilized') their must be a point at which we will draw the line and state 'No farther'.

I don't think we, as observers, can really decide that. It isn't our lives under immediate threat of death. We have time to think. The soldiers on the front lines do not. In a perfect world, there'd be no war. Or we'd at least have some weapon that would knock everyone out, instead of killing them, and thereby saving civilian lives. But I think that as long as our enemies are willing to sacrifice their women and children, what are we to do? We can't expect our soldiers to die because the enemy does not abide by the ROE.
