The club has an option on Little's contract for next season. In his two years as Red Sox manager, they were 93-69 and 95-67, and qualified for the playoffs this season for the first time since 1999. Little says he is being judged on one decision.
"Right now I am disappointed that evidently some people are judging me on the results of one decision I made -- not the decision, but the results of the decision," he said. "Less than 24 hours before, those same people were hugging and kissing me. If that's the way they operate, I'm not sure I want to be part of it."
Many of the team's key players, including Todd Walker and Manny Ramirez, have publicly said Little should return.
If he had to do it again, Little said he would keep Martinez in to pitch the eighth inning, when the Yankees came back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game.
The 53-year-old Little became the Red Sox's 43rd manager on March 11, 2002 after Joe Kerrigan was fired. Kerrigan had taken over late in the 2001 season after Jimy Williams was fired.
Little managed 16 seasons in the minors from 1980 through 1995 and was San Diego's bullpen coach in 1996. He spent the next three seasons as Williams' bench coach in Boston then had the same job the next two seasons with Charlie Manuel in Cleveland.

And it is a season finale that can realistically happen, if...
Tennessee or New England, which might be the best team in pro football, doesn't spoil it for the 11-1 Chiefs. And if the Rams can continue to play like they did most of Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. In a "statement game," the Rams put an exclamation point on a 48-17 trouncing of a division leader, ripping off a 31-0 stretch. These young Rams didn't look nearly as special in recent weeks while struggling to beat Chicago and Arizona, but they demonstrated that they remain the most dangerous team in the NFC.
"We've found our identity, I believe, and that's a football team that is resilient and doesn't quit," said Rams right tackle Kyle Turley, the human tattoo acquired in a trade from New Orleans last spring. "It has all the capabilities to dominate."
The Top Contenders
The Rams are 9-3, but it is a quiet 9-3. No one in the league seems to fear St. Louis like they did a few years ago, and that may be a mistake. This is not the same Rams team Vermeil coached, though it still retains its most important component, running back Marshall Faulk, who scored three touchdowns against the Vikes. When he is healthy and the Rams are run-blocking effectively, he remains the best all-around back in the NFL. And that only makes the Rams' passing game all that much more dangerous, particularly with a young, aggressive downfield thrower like Marc Bulger hooking up with the best receiving tandem in the league, Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce.
"I think the team in '99 was maybe a bit more polished than this team. This is a young football team, and it's still figuring out how to play," said Rams defensive end Grant Wistrom, a Missouri native who dreams of a Chiefs-Rams championship clash. "The team is still figuring out how to play these intense, playoff-atmosphere games. We know we're a good football team, but we have to eliminate the small errors. This team has the potential to be better than that team."
The two times the Rams have secured home-field advantage in the playoffs since 1999, they went to the Super Bowl. It is extremely difficult to play at the Edward Jones Dome, as the Vikings rediscovered Sunday when crowd noise became a factor. Playing in St. Louis is like trying to read Shakespeare while listening to Aerosmith. The Rams have won their last 12 at home.
Conceivably, St. Louis could run the table in December and finish 13-3. Of course, you can't dismiss Philadelphia in the NFC, or the team the Eagles defeated Sunday, Carolina. The Panthers play smash-mouth football and "shorten" a game with running back Stephen Davis. The 9-3 Eagles have won nine of their last 10. They mix it up on offense with Donovan McNabb but have had difficulty stopping the run.
The Rams, too, are far from perfect. They are turnover-prone. The offensive line is shaky at times. Martz remains the league's most unconventional coach, and often is second-guessed for his play-calling, choice of timeouts and use of instant-replay challenges. (Did we mention some folks think he doesn't care about special teams and that he's arrogant, too?) The fact of the matter is "Mad Mike" is still learning how to be a head coach. Don't forget: He was an offensive coordinator for one season under Vermeil before he got his job.
Some Rams fans believe Martz isn't even playing the right quarterback: Kurt Warner. They are wrong about that. Warner's days are over in St. Louis, and he knows it. The coach and the team believe in Bulger and, though the young quarterback has had some unnerving moments because of his gunslinger mentality, he is the present and the future. Besides, is it the worst thing to have a two-time MVP as your backup?
"Our offense is very special," Turley said. "It's unique, unlike any offense I've been on. We take chances, but when it's on, it's just unstoppable.
"And that's a beautiful thing to see."

I admit it. As the '90s gave way to this new century of ours, I was convinced the Yankees were on their way to another dynasty. But as things turned out, it was nothing George Steinbrenner couldn't screw up.
The Bronx Bombers may have been all the rage early in the century. But then, so was Enron stock.

Evidently, this Curse of the Bambino business doesn't apply to the offseason. While the Yankees haven't done much of anything right since the first snowflake, the Red Sox have become the team to beat in the bats-and-balls business. And that's assuming the players association, aka Scrooge & Marley, Inc., blocks the Alex Rodriguez-Manny Ramirez trade.

Even without A-Rod, the Red Sox are better than the Yankees. For that matter, the Sox would have been better last season if the Boston front office hadn't insisted on going with a disaster-by-committee to handle the ninth inning. Now that Keith Foulke is around to follow the elephant, shovel in hand, the Red Sox will rule the American League East.

The Yankees? Their 15 decades of fame are up. Hey, stuff happens when your owner quits listening to his people. Well, not all his people. I'm thinking, given some of the Yankees' offseason moves, Steinbrenner has been picking the brain of his pool boy in Tampa.

Steinbrenner's fatal flaw has emerged once again, just as it did 20 years ago, when the Yankees dropped off the baseball map after a series of ridiculous personnel decisions. Once again, he has confused being rich with being smart. Add a little good, old-fashioned arrogance into the equation -- and heaven knows there's plenty of that to go around in the Bronx -- and you've got a surefire recipe for disaster.

The Red Sox have added Foulke, he of the 43 saves last season, and Curt Schilling, one of the greatest pitchers of his generation. If you're keeping score -- and this being the Yankees and Red Sox, you are -- Boston now has two starting pitchers better than anyone the Yankees can march to the mound.

Not that all the news is bad for the Yankees on the pitching front. If you're a betting man, you'd have to take their staff in a tag-team wrestling match with Boston, what with David Wells still stuffing himself into a Yankees uniform between happy hours.
��
In Steinbrenner's perfect world, Schilling would be pitching for the Yankees next season. But he was outmaneuvered for Schilling's services by Theo Epstein, the Red Sox's preppy general manager, forcing Steinbrenner to execute Plan B, a deal with Montreal that brought Javier Vazquez to the Bronx.
��
Good pitcher, Vazquez, but he's no Schilling. And he's no Andy Pettitte or Roger Clemens, either. As if December hasn't been cold enough for Steinbrenner, Clemens is talking about joining Pettitte in the Astros' rotation. If that happens, they'd better hide the sharp objects in the Boss' office, leaving only the autographed picture of himself and the framed slogan on the wall: The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

The Yankees' shortcomings may begin with pitching, but they don't end there. Now that Steinbrenner has dealt away Nick Johnson, an emerging young hitter and a steady glove at first base, the Yankees figure to have one of the worst defensive teams in the business. I haven't seen leather this bad since I shelled out $9.99 for a jacket in Tijuana.

Jason Giambi, your basic DH, bad knees and all, will play first base. Gary Sheffield, the worst defensive right fielder in the business, was signed despite pleas from Steinbrenner's suits to pursue Vladimir Guerrero.
Finally, there's Kenny Lofton, signed this week to play center field. Of all the moves in baseball's offseason, that one drew the loudest laughter from the establishment. Lofton has lost two steps, leaving him one ahead of the nearest popcorn vendor.

Add it all up and you've got an overpriced, dysfunctional team, one incapable of competing with the hated Red Sox. Not even Derek Jeter's greatness can save the Yankees now that his TV commercial partner is calling the shots. Far as I can tell, the Yankees' only hope is history.

Seems the Red Sox have a fatal flaw, too. It's called October.
Blowing His Horn
It's 2003, and it's all about me, me, me. That explains how Saints wideout Joe Horn caught a touchdown pass against the Giants last week, then was given a cell phone by Michael Lewis, who reached into the goal-post padding and pulled it out, presumably to tell the world that his team's 7-7 record was everybody's fault but his.

The Saints play in Jacksonville on Sunday, and Jaguars officials will be ready for Horn's encore performance. My sources, Bartles & James, tell me the Jags are planning to install mousetraps in the goal posts.

Fit to Be Tied
The Bucs and Raiders haven't bothered to show up this season, leaving any number of teams as the one to beat in the Not For Long. So which AFC team will land in the Super Bowl? We may have a better idea by sunset Saturday.

The Patriots and Chiefs are tied atop the conference at 12-2, and each has an assignment better left for Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible. The Chiefs play in the Vikings' dome, sweet dome and the Pats will have to contend with the Jets at the Meadowlands.

If one of the two teams loses, the other would figure to get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, immediately stamping it as the class of the conference. The loser gets the home version of Jeopardy and a set of encyclopedias they'll never read.

Fool's Gold No More
OK, OK, who's the wise guy who turned the NBA's Midwest Division standings upside down? As the weekend approached, the Nuggets were in first place with a 16-9 record. Nothing unusual there, except that they won 17 games last season.

So much for the rookie of the year award. This just in: LeBron James isn't going to win it. His team went into the weekend with a 6-19 record, good for the wine cellar in the Central Division. Then there's Carmelo Anthony, who manages two or three dunks a night despite having to carry 11 other players on his back.

Willie McGinest returned an interception for a score and the Patriots picked off Chad Pennington four other times, keying a 21-16 victory over the New York Jets. Tom Brady also threw two touchdown passes to David Givens, but the offense struggled most of the game, keeping the Jets in it until the end.
With Kansas City's loss earlier in the day, the Patriots (13-2) now have the best record in the NFL. If the Indianapolis Colts lose Sunday to Denver, the Patriots would clinch a first-round bye.
Even though the Patriots hold the head-to-head tiebreakers over the Chiefs and the Colts, Indianapolis still could steal the AFC home-field advantage from New England. The Colts must win their final two games, have the Patriots lose at home to Buffalo in their finale and have the Chiefs beat Chicago.
All three teams would finish at 13-3 and head-to-head tiebreakers would be thrown out because the Chiefs and Patriots did not meet. That would negate New England's edge on the Colts, who they beat 38-34.
"Yeah we've got 11, which is always good, but our goal was to finish undefeated," Givens said. "After the first couple of games, our run really speaks for itself. We're finding ways to win every week."
Patriots 21, Jets 16
That is for sure. They won their seventh game by seven points or less, the mark of a good team that knows how to finish off victories.
The Jets (6-9) have not been as fortunate. They will finish the season with a losing record for the first time since 1996, when they went 1-15, and have dropped six games by seven points or less.
Pennington helped the Patriots win, throwing a career-high five interceptions -- including one in the end zone to Ty Law. Pennington had seven interceptions going into the game.
Fittingly, the Patriots ended the Jets' final rally with an interception. Eugene Wilson picked off Pennington to preserve the victory. Pennington finished 24-of-43 for 229 yards and two running scores. Afterward, several teammates gave him words of encouragement.
"When you know you lost the game for your team and your teammates pat you on the back and give you words of encouragement, it means a lot," Pennington said. "This was a night where the finger is pointed at me, but they're not pointing fingers."

The Patriots needed their defense to play well to even have a chance. New England had 13 first downs to 22 for the Jets, went three of 11 on third down and finished with fewer total yards (321-271).
Tedy Bruschi got the first pickoff on the second play of the game. It took eight seconds for the Patriots to convert the turnover into a score, when Brady threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Givens for a quick 7-0 lead.
The Jets answered when Pennington ran for a 1-yard TD to tie it up. With the Patriots struggling offensively, the defense stepped up again. McGinest returned an interception 15 yards for another score, the fifth time this season the Patriots returned a pickoff for a touchdown, tying a team record set in 2001.
New England has a total of six defensive touchdowns this season, which leads the NFL.
"Coach always tells us that turnovers need to mean points," McGinest said. "So that was a big one. So was Tedy's because we got points out of that one right away and we were up 7-0."
New England was not done making big plays. After Brady threw his second TD pass of the game to Givens to make it 21-10 in the third quarter, the Jets drove down the field. Pennington threw a pass for Santana Moss in the end zone from the Patriots' 21, but Law was there to intercept it.
The Jets would not go quietly. Pennington scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth to make it 21-16. The 2-point conversion try failed when he threw incomplete to Kevin Lockett. The Patriots punted away, and the Jets had the ball with a chance to go ahead.
Rodney Harrison made sure that did not happen, intercepting a deep pass intended for Moss.
"Our DBs, the guys we've got, they've got to be right up on top of the league with interceptions," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "They're playing really good back there in terms of getting their hands on the ball and reacting to it and intercepting it. The two by the linebackers were very big plays."
Brady finished 12-of-25 for 138 yards and two scores, while Antowain Smith had 18 carries for 121 yards.
New England ends the season at Buffalo, with yet another close victory behind them.
"This win shows great maturity on our part," Bruschi said. "We've got the veterans in here that can get the message through to the younger players."
Notes: Moss had five catches for 52 yards, going over the 1,000 yard mark on the season for the first time in his career. ... Bruschi set a career high with his third interception of the season. ... Patriots LB Mike Vrabel had two sacks, giving him a career-high 9.5 this season, the highest sack total under Belichick.
