PostSun Apr 11, 2004 8:25 pm    Voyagers High Yield Torpedoes...

In a few episodes they talks about High Yield warheads. They are of class 10 and photon torpedoes are class 6. I have never seen Voyager fire a high yield torpedo... so if anyone seen it please tell me how it looked. I seen it once in the Scorpion part 2 episode Voyager fired a "Class 10 high yield warhead" but that one was modified with the nanoprobes so they all looked the in the same way.

You can change the yield of each torpedo, maybe that's all they mean, that they can hold more antimatter?

This is a good question. I don't remember ever seeing one. Then again, I did miss a couple of episodes. I know, I'm horrible for not seeing every Voyager episode, sorry....

According to the DS9 technical manual, the theoretical maximum explosive yield for a matter-antimatter reaction was 25 isotons, which had been reached with an upgrade of a Mark-IX warhead (which I guess would be class 9, making the upgrade class 10). So therefore the class-6 must be a standard torpedo for Voyager, with class-10 an upgrade if they needed it.

you can increase the explosive yield as much as you want
(see 'the omega directive' there they are speaking of a torpedo with a charge of 50 isoton and even more !!)

In Omega directive Voyager modified some of it's torpedoes to a yeild of upto 80 isotons "Enough to destroy a small moon" but they were never used and the information on how to make them was classified and was only to be used in omega directive situations.

No High yeild torpedoes were seen in voyager. Accept yes the borg modified ones.

isnt explosions in space generally flawed? i mean w/o air how can there be fire so i conclude that the impolsion should rip the time/space continuum... no im not a trekky so just ignore me

There is no fire per se, the 'fire' is actually the release of high-energy plasma (which is essentially ionized gas).

The explosion of antimatter basically eliminates the matter and antimatter portions of a photon torpedo, releasing tremendous amounts of energy. This energy just travels through the vacuum until it is absorbed by something, whether it is the hull of a starship or (hopefully) its shields. Since most energy has no mass, it therefore does not curve space-time.

Sorry...afraid not...the damaging effects of a higher yield torpedo may be more...but the size of the torpedo stays the same.

Otherwise you'd have like 10 torpedo launchers above the deflector dish just to be able to fire different yields of a torpedo...No. That's inefficient.

We even see Tuvok and Harry working on one that Janeway ordered to be built...it's the same size as their standard normal working torpedo.

Well, I've only ever seen one in Scorpion and the difference is that the explosion essentially affects a wider area... a normal torpedo would have blown up just one ship or part of one ship but the high yield one took out, what was it, 17 vessels or something? Basically, the blast radius is bigger...

Voyager fired a high yield torpedo in the scorpion and destroyed 13 bio-ships.

Well, what destroyed the bio-ships was a large warhead... not really a torpedo, I guess. They kept calling that one a "warhead." Where as the rest were just "torpedoes."

otherwise with torpedoes, you just adjust the yield. Maximum yield, low yield...in TNG you hear them say "Torpedoes, maximum yield, Full spread..." alot. Well, at least that was one of my earliest memories of TNG.
