I was under the impression that the Enterprise-E had to lower her shields to fire quantum torpedos, am I mistaken?

Where did you hear this? This is the first I have heard of it. I just assumed that they were normal weapons that can be fired with the shields raised like photons and phasers etc.

I read in one book that there is a small opening the forms in the shield, and the torp passes through it. Hope that helps

I think I know the book(s) you mean. In the TNG books of the Dominion War (a 2-part TNG/2-part DS9 quadrilogy), Picard orders the shields lowered each time the Enterprise fires Quantum torpedoes. I put it down as a continuity error as it seems a bit daft. The other ship could just cripple her whilst she is firing.

Keep in mind that NOTHING in any Trek novel is canon, only what is seen in a Trek film or TV series.

I always think of it as being canon until proven otherwise

nah it's not possible they have to lower their shields every time they fire torpedoes, that would be stupid
more likely the torpedoes have the same frequency as the shielding thus passing trough them without having to lower them

Or it could just be a precaution...

Maybe firing through the shields weakens them slightly so when they can, they lower them, fire and then bring 'em back up.

You would'ent believe how much research i've done on this.
the reason they have to lower shield is since quantum energy burns just about everything it touchs (it's only 4 times as powerful as photon torpedoes are) you might think that it hurt there own shields... nope it's cuz warp plasma is always being vented but when the shields are up it makes like a gas chamber in the space between the hull and the shields and if a Q torp was fired it would ignite the plasma therfore destroying the enterprise or at least damageing it alot.
