Report: Al Qaeda Has Nukes

Sunday, March 21, 2004

SYDNEY, Australia Usama bin Laden's (search) terror network claims to have bought ready-made nuclear weapons on the black market in central Asia, the biographer of Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader was quoted as telling an Australian television station.

In an interview scheduled to be televised on Monday, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir said Ayman al-Zawahiri (search) claimed that "smart briefcase bombs" were available on the black market.

It was not clear when the interview between Mir and al-Zawahiri took place.

U.S. intelligence agencies have long believed that Al Qaeda (search) attempted to acquire a nuclear device on the black market, but say there is no evidence it was successful.

In the interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp. television, parts of which were released Sunday, Mir recalled telling al-Zawahiri it was difficult to believe that Al Qaeda had nuclear weapons when the terror network didn't have the equipment to maintain or use them.

"Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri laughed and he said 'Mr. Mir, if you have $30 million, go to the black market in central Asia, contact any disgruntled Soviet scientist, and a lot of ... smart briefcase bombs are available,'" Mir said in the interview.

"They have contacted us, we sent our people to Moscow, to Tashkent, to other central Asian states and they negotiated, and we purchased some suitcase bombs," Mir quoted al-Zawahiri as saying.

Al-Qaeda has never hidden its interest in acquiring nuclear weapons.

The U.S. federal indictment of bin Laden charges that as far back as 1992 he "and others known and unknown, made efforts to obtain the components of nuclear weapons."

Bin Laden, in a November 2001 interview with a Pakistani journalist, boasted having hidden such components "as a deterrent." And in 1998, a Russian nuclear weapons design expert was investigated for allegedly working with bin Laden's Taliban allies.

It was revealed last month that Pakistan's top nuclear scientist had sold sensitive equipment and nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea, fueling fears the information could have also fallen into the hands of terrorists.

Earlier, Mir told Australian media that al-Zawahiri also claimed to have visited Australia to recruit militants and collect funds.

"In those days, in early 1996, he was on a mission to organize his network all over the world," Mir was quoted as saying. "He told me he stopped for a while in Darwin, he was ... looking for help and collecting funds."

Australia's Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said the government could not rule out the possibility that al-Zawahiri visited Australia in the 1990s under a different name.

"Under his own name or any known alias he hasn't traveled to Australia," Ruddock told reporters Saturday. "That doesn't mean to say that he may not have come under some other false documentation, or some other alias that's not known to us."

Mir describe al-Zawahiri as "the real brain behind Usama bin Laden."

"He is the real strategist, Usama bin Laden is only a front man," Mir was quoted as saying during the interview. "I think he is more dangerous than bin Laden."

Al-Zawahiri an Egyptian surgeon is believed to be hiding in the rugged region around the Pakistan-Afghan border where U.S. and Pakistani troops are conducting a major operation against Taliban and Al Qaeda forces.

He is said to have played a leading role in orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

I wouldn't worry about it, Osama Bin Laden wouldn't have The Technology to launch Nuclear Weapons, it's probably just another fear. If anyone has Nuclear Capability then I would say The North Koreans.

You can't exactly call a Terrorist who strikes an Attack on the World's Greatest Military Superpower, a Coward.

I thought you supported Bush, my Mistake

Just because I said OBL wasn't a Coward doesn't mean I support him, I'm totally anti-Terrorist.

Well then, by your standards, every person in the world(Unless they are seriously messed up in the head), is considered a coward.

Osama obviously does not have the force to fight America face-to-face.

There are many different kinds of warfare, Osama uses one, which is not the one America is used to.

Don't get me wrong, I don't support Osama or Terrorism in any manner.

I beleive what she is trying to say, and if this is not what you are trying to say KMMA, I was gonna say it anyway..but, is that Bin Laden IS a coward because he gets people to attack for him. HE doesn't become a martar in a suicide attack...he teaches other how.....he didn't fly the planes into 3 building and kill 3000 people himself, he taught other people to and taught them how......and I am sure he gets other people to fight while he hides in a cave.....
and Pah Wraith...

your reference to Bush as an evildoer was not the least bit amusing...I find it disgusting to have people talking about my President like that, that just disgusts me, all I can say is that I am glad you do not live in America because I would hope no American would ever suggest that our President is an evildoer...especially when he is nothing of the such....if you want to talk about evil doers...talk about Saddam Husseign, whose idol was Hitler, which Bush took out of power and has captured...or Osama Bin Laden, but putting Bush in the same category as those evil people, is incomprehensable.
+
Not only this, I think it is terrible that yall would even JOKE about this! I don't think joking about whether a man who attacked the United States and killed 3000 fine American citizens is something you should be ashamed of. How would you think it would make the families of those who lost loved ones in the September 11th attacks feel...joking about whether Osama is a coward!

Ugh..the posts in this topic are utterly dispicable.

Yes that I was going to say JanewayIsHott. Let them rant and rave. We know Bin ladden is a coward. I will defend my president to to the end. People really don't know him. He is a good christian man and people just want to bash him for it. They want to bash him for protecting our country. They also have to realize sometimes war is needed to protect.
I know my husband is proud to serve his country when he fought in the Iraqi war. He wanted to defend America and help free the Iraqi people.
So guess u gonna bash my husband now for believing for what he does and doing what he does?
God Bless the troops, President, and America!!!!!!

Hmmmmmm.......I dont wanna start arguing our getting political because i dont have the time for that and my evidence will get deleted by the admins anyways soo ill just say this........yes Osama Bin Laden is a horribel person and I do not support him....nore do i Support Bush.

What Osama did teach his people to be martars...really not much diff with us MILITARY.Already a estimated 10,0000 iraqi civilians are dead and 600 good honorable US soilders have lost there lives. The destruction in Iraq is far worse then Sept.11th..and worse of all Iraq may soon be in for a civil war.If that happens perhaps another dictator will be inplace.Perhaps this tike worse then saddam.I would go on but as i sayed the admins will delete it.

P.S. Kmma and Janeway...........I dont know how Bush did it but even though I dont like him i have to admire ur respect and passion towards ur leader...even though im not a fan of america..u are true americians and that is honorable.

I find it disgusting to follow someone blindly. Whoever it is. I don't follow anyone blindly, but I do have people I look up to, and respect. Most of these people are dead...but that's besides the point.

I think that you should never believe anything fully.

I do not follow President Bush blindly, I am very into politics, and I know more than enough to say that I am not following President Bush "blindly". If that is all you can respond with then I am not to concerned to defend myself farther.

I do not ask that you have to like America or President Bush, but, I will not tolerate people, Americans or an other nationality not to say such dishonorable things about my leader, especially Americans because he is your leader to, whether you like it or not, and you should have the dignity to restrain yourself from making such remarks.

Sorry I mean to say 10,000 not 100,000.Ten thousand iraqis civians dead. This however is the causualties that have occured with the civilains over the past year.....not just the war.

Im not surprised that u didnt hear about that but then agian if Bush started saying 10,000 iraqi Civils wre dead I doubt that would look very good no him.

I find it rather scary that some of you cannot see the cowardice in bin Laden's actions... War is one thing. Terrorism, and the murder of innocent civilians, quite another. And the US is currently at war. Do we know where our leader is? 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C. Not in some cave, or hole in the ground.

I in no way support terrorism, but as was previously stated, this is a different kind of war. To attack a nation as powerful as the U.S. would be ridiculously fool-hardy, which is why the Sept. 11 attacks happened in that fashion. What must also not be discounted though is that it is well documented that the U.S. has proceeded with many covert ops, which is not open warfare. What is an important question is whether or not the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq is justified. Afghanistan, would appear to be, but Iraq? I think not. Freeing people is noble and just but the imposition of governments and culture onto other nations is not. Imposing what is our 'cultural norm' on another culture is vile in itself. The results are even in the U.S. apparent on Indian reservations. If the purpose of invading Iraq is too free its people, then what about North Korea or many of the African nations? Iraq = oil = $. That is the sum of the Iraqi invasion. This is my perspective as freely posted as those previous to it. If it is eliminated by the admin I will be severely disappointed as that is clearly a violation of the freedom of speech that Americans so rightly value. And, in the tradition of Star Trek, we should all value the freedom of non - hateful discourse.

First of all...it may suprise you to know....but America actually is not able to be everywhere at once and help everyone else. First of all....North Korea has the third largest army in the world and is very likly to have nukes....I think it would be much better to attempt a diplomatic solution. Secondly, Iraq had been violating UN policy for what 10 years? There was no diplomatic solution to that. Do you think it is justified to leave the Iraqi people under the control of a leader who did not care for them whatsoever and used there oil money to build him palaces, as where we use the oil money that we are not getting incredible amounts of to rebuild Iraq. Finally, we are not "imposing" our culture on them... we are giving them the chance to live in a free country just like you and me...do you not want to attempt to share our freedom with these oppressed people.
