PostFri Mar 19, 2004 10:43 pm    Graphics

One of the things I am noticing here is that a lot of people think that graphics creation is something one whipes up in a few seconds.

In order to do something about that, I decided to educate a few of you about the steps involved into creating something as simple as a signature.

That is indeed assuming that the creator wishes to be original and not simply cut and resize an existing image.

First of all, a background is needed for a signature image. In STV's case it would be a 500x100 pixel background. The background color doesn't matter too much since that will be changed anyway.

The next step is to carefully select a few matching images that can be blended into eachother. Finding these takes time, and a lot of criteria must be met before those images can be used. (background color, can I easily cut out the object I want? Quality of the image etc....) This takes at least 30 minutes.

After that, the images must be resized and cut properly into the shape one finds suiting. When that is done, the image transition must be taken into account, this can be one long process and can take up to 30 minutes.

Then the extras, what text do I want? what else must be added? do I wish to add certain gradients, do I want the text semi transparent, what font suits the image best?

All in all, creating something as simple as a signature can take a person over 1.5 hours.

So next time you are shouting for a signature image, remember that the "artist" (if he takes pride in his work) must really put some effort into this.

V.

Do you really think that is going to stop people? I think its a good idea to put it up, and maybe people will listen, but it wont change anything.

Vortex, this is so very true but I'm gonig with Defiant on this one. If someone wants to do a good job on something and it takes a long time but a quick fix comes up most people are going to choose the quick fix. I find these days time is very valuable to people.

This was simply a (poor) try to educate the few that are whining for graphics here. It seems that a lot don't know what is happening and think it's a simple procedure that they simply don't know. For example, I take pride in my work. I always have, and it happened more then once that a person used my graphics for a day or two and then replaced it for a cheap banner, simply because it flashes or is the logo of a site they frequent.

Not that there's anything wrong with it, but having a custom signature created to one's personal needs does remain special.

Indeed a graphics program, and some descent knowledge on how to operate that program is needed. That doesn't come in one's standard package.

I take pride in my graphics, and also in my old signature work (am not making those these days)

Anyway, let me stick to this topic, If one takes a few seconds to think about my words before posting his/her request, I think that my post here has served its purpose.

Thank regina, kiss back to you

V.
