Toni Morrison? I read Song of Solomon by her this year and the IB kids read Beloved. I really like her, she's brilliant when it comes to putting a story together. And I missed it because she came to my town to talk at the college and I could have gotten tickets but by the time we all found out, it was too late. I have a friend who won some scholarship and got to have lunch with her... thats cool

Just finished Angela's Ashes, it was good, but kinda sad.

No, this is a book called The Poisonwood Bible.

So I wondered what everyone thought so far of the entire book only being narrated by females the females in the story, and why Nathan never gets to narrate. What do you think it brings to the story etc?

I think that it brings more of a sense of direness. A man might not think much of, for example, not getting new clothes for easter while a person like Rachel makes a relatively big deal out of it.

I kind of think the way they talk about Nathan, to this point, leaves him kind of illusive...I didn't get to learn all too much about him as compared to the other characters...it might just be the way I read it or something, but for now he seems like a bit of a wildcard. It's apparent that he's strict to his religion, and...well...did we get to learn anything else about him?

Yeah, I think later... in Orleanna's chapter at the beginning of The Judges... she talks a lot more about Nathan. Mostly his past, which gives a lot of inside info into his character.

Yeah, I think Nathan not ever narrating is a good theme for the whole book. Later especially. BUt near the beginning I think the first thing I noticed about it was that- as POisonwood was sort of an allusion to the Bible- it was interesting that Kingsolver had all of her voices be females, where the real Bible has all male narrators. It could definatly bring about a different perspective on life, religion, priorities, etc. Especially in a God-fearing sort of world the the Prices live in at the time... the world of their family, that is.
