PostWed Feb 25, 2004 11:20 am    Red Dwarf

Has anyone else out there ever seen the BBC show called 'Red Dwarf'? It's a hilarious sci-fi comedy, and everyone I know that's into Star Trek loved it.

A favorite line:
Everyone wakes up with a hangover from a party the night before.
Android: "Is this the human quality know as friendship?"
Lister: "Don't give me that star trek crap, it's too early in the morning"

The show's premise:
Red Dwarf is a huge (size of a metropolis), self-sustaining mining vessel owned by the Jupiter Mining Corporation. Dave Lister, a complete loser stuck on the moon Titan, wants to return to Earth but is broke. So he signs on to Red Dwarf for a free ride home. Once there he finds out the tour is supposed to be 5 years. He doesn't want to wait that long so he breaks quarantine by smuggling a cat on board. The captain finds out, Lister hides the cat and won't reveal it's location, so the captain puts him in stasis until he can go to trial on Earth.
5 million years later the computer brings Lister out of stasis. While he was in stasis there was a radiation leak which killed every person on the ship. The ship automatically set a course for deep space and headed away from our system these last 5 million years. The computer has gone senile and gotten lonely, and revives Lister now that the radiation levels have died down. It brings back one of the dead crewmen (Rimmer) back as a hologram to keep Lister sane, unfortunately Rimmer is the person Lister hated the most on the ship. The only other person on the ship is a humanoid called 'the cat' which evolved from the cat Lister hid on the ship 5 million years ago. The cat is totally egocentric and self-centered, he worries more about his looks than his life.

Sure have, I love it.

Lister and Rimmer share stories to pass the time as they're marooned on a planet in an episode funnily enough, titled 'Marooned'. Lister tells Rimmer that he lost his virginity on a golf course aged just twelve.

Rimmer: You lost you virginity when you were twelve?
Lister: Yeah.
Rimmer: Twelve years old?...You can't have been a full member of the golf club then.

Are they really going to do a movie? I had heard that the 3-part episode 'Back in the Red' was the best they could get approval for.

Did you ever see the american pilot for Red Dwarf? It was pretty weak.

Yeah they said they were waiting for the studio and stuff to sort out production dates/budget and all that stuff, I've never seen the american version/pilot, doubt anything will recapture the magic of red dwarf

I've only seen the first two seasons. How many seasons were made? And in what series did that actress Chloe Annett join?

Thanks in advance.

Eight series so far. Chloe Annett joined in series seven, and she was very annoying. IMO though she greatly improved in series eight.

Ah......The mighty 'Dwarf'.........My specialist subject !!

Latest movie news can be found here :

Seems it's mainly to do with the money aspect of things.

I have a few 'Desktop Wallpapers' of Red Dwarf that I have been tinkering
with, I could post them if you like. As long as i'm not breaking any rules !!.

Yuk, I really don't like the possibility of stars being in the film just so it would get some publicity. Although Kochanski was introduced in series seven because of a similar reason, so...

I just hope it gets made eventually.
