Thu Mar 11, 2004 8:40 pm Does Music Dictate Your Personality? |
|
It has been suggested that the kind of music that you listen to dictates your dress style and the way you are. I don't really believe that. I was wondering what everyone else thought about that.

I would have to say yes, because the more Marilyn Manson I listen to, the more gothic I become.

I think it sort of depends on your personality - I mean, if you don't really care for any type of music, it really can't influence you, can it? For me, it doesn't dictate my life; I think it's more like it helps and enhances my life. It's a part of my life and therefore a part of me, but it doesn't control me in any way.

weird, I have this whole paper of it in front of me. it's from some personality test that my mom brought home for some reason...
(this is what it says, I don't know if it's true, it mostly is for me, but hey)
If you listen to...
Broadway showtunes or standards, you're "an extrovert" and have no trouble being in the spotlight
Top 40 pop, you're a "mover and a shaker", on the move and involved, with lots of energy
Rock 'n Roll oldies or classic rock, you're "steady and reliable", holding on to the family values you learned in childhood
Country-western, you're "all heart", a compassionate realist who puts love, loyalty and family first
Classical or Jazz, you're an "ace problem solver", enjoying the company of close family and friends, but also enjoy being alone every now and then
Light pop or easy listening, you're "stress-proof", usually having to get a lot of things done, but you can breeze through without distraction or stress
I guess that puts me everywhere... except being steady and reliable... which I think I am... so maybe I should start listening to some oldies

I personally think that music can sort of influence you. But the reason I started this topic was because I was thinking about the Colombine killings and how they said that it was Marlyn Manson's falt. That really pissed me off. What do you think about it???

Everybody is responsible for their own actions. I don't like Marlyn Manson but he don't control nobody's mind and make them do stuff that they did not want to do.
I listen to Christian, country, and classic rock and it really does not bother me. I sometimes listen to heavy metal. THey say Ozzy was a cause i think it was a boy killing himself or something. Kids some really don't listen what the lyrics say. THey just like to head bang. I was once a teenager and I head banged to heavy metal. I never was affected by it. My mom always supervivsed what I was listening to back then. She would not let me listen to Kiss but I don't find nothing wrong. I don't think they are devil worshippers. even if they were it is none of my business.
Now its the artists that may influnece these young teenagers to dress half naked but not nothing wrong with the songs. If my kids started dressing like Britney and Christina oh boy she will get her hinny tore up first all I don't plan on letting Anna look at pics of them. I will raise her to the right way but I have to let her make her own choices though and hope she mkaes the right one.

You don't want your kids to see pictures of Aguilera and Spears etc etc? I have great method for that: Lock them in their rooms and throw away the key.
As for the question, yes it does. A little, at least.

Anyways, I strongly believe that popular culture effects everyone, whether you believe so or not. Its out there, and you cant stop it. I think that it effects my online personality more than in real life, but it definetly is there.

Absolutely not, for me at least.
I listen to HipHop and Rap, and i'm not a 'gangsta' or anything. In fact, I'm a very nice guy. When it comes to clothing, I wear whatever feels good. Nothing tight, I wanna feel comfortable. I never imitate, or wanna imitate, anything I see in the Rap Videos. So the music I listen too does not reflect who I am. I listen to it for the bits and mad rhymes and just cuz I like it.

It does a little for me. I usually listen to metal, and so I tend do dress in like blue jeans and black shirts, and either black shoes or boots. I like the metal-head look.
Metallica rules!!!

I'll say a little. But not really all that much to make a difference.
I have a few rap CDs, but I'm really un-ghetto,
So not especially, I guess that listening to certain music can change your mood, though.

It doesnt matter. It influences you in some way, whether you wear the clothes, are a nice guy, or imitate anything. You said that you like it. That is influence. So, you are influenced by it!

its a total load of bull, and if the reverend wanted some one dead, he would do it himself. he's already proven this by plotting out the murder of a chick he use to beat on stage as part of the act. of course he never killed her, when he went to do it there were too many people around that he thought could ID him, besides he was all coked out

Personally for me my personality will affect what music I listen to, with the mood I'm in at the time also affecting it. For some people though, I think they are influenced by the music they listen to, and the artists that they idolise.

Music really don't affect me cause I am responsible for my own actions. But people are different so I really can not say about other people.
