03.09.2004 - He died of a heart attack
In Memoriam: Paul Winfield

Paul Winfield, Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor who gave two very memorable performances in Star Trek, died Sunday, March 7, of a heart attack. He was 62.
Winfield played Captain Clark Terrell of the ill-fated U.S.S. Reliant in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." He returned to the franchise in Star Trek: The Next Generation as "Dathon," the metaphor-speaking Tamarian captain in the classic "Darmok" episode.

Winfield was only the third African-American to receive an Academy Award nomination for best actor when he was honored for his performance as Nathan Lee Morgan, the loving sharecropper father in the 1972 classic "Sounder." His last role was a cameo in the 2003 made-for-TV remake of "Sounder."

Winfield won an Emmy in 1995 for his role as a federal judge on "Picket Fences," and had previously been nominated for his lauded performance as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1978 miniseries "King," again in 1979 for "Roots: the Next Generation." He also received an NAACP Image Award in 1982 for the TV movie "The Sophisticated Gents."

A character actor with a long resum, Winfield has appeared in more than 40 feature films, including "Damnation Alley," "The Terminator" and "Mars Attacks!" He also had a busy career in television since the 1950's, with roles in Perry Mason, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, Mannix and many others, and more recently had recurring roles in L.A. Law and Touched by an Angel. He lent his voice several times to The Simpsons and Batman Beyond and also appeared in Babylon 5.

Funeral services are pending. Complete obituaries can be found at the external news links below.

STARTREK.COM extends condolences to the friends and family of Paul Winfield. His work will long be admired.
