Teen arrested for teacher shooting
Monday, February 9, 2004 Posted: 9:16 PM EST (0216 GMT)

EAST GREENBUSH, New York (AP) -- A 16-year-old student shot and wounded a special-education teacher in the leg Monday as he let off three shotgun blasts in a high school hallway, authorities said.

Jon W. Romano, a junior, was arrested at the school, police said. He pleaded not guilty Monday night to a charge of attempted murder and was sent to jail.

His lawyer, E. Stewart Jones, said he would file a bail application later this week and further discuss Romano's case at that time.

Police did not immediately disclose a motive for the shooting, which happened around 10:30 a.m. and sent Columbia High School in suburban Albany into lockdown before the arrest.

Superintendent Terrance Brewer said the student fired three rounds of birdshot from a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, and one round hit teacher Michael Bennett in the leg. Assistant principal John Sawchuk stopped Romano and held him until police came, Brewer said.

Bennett was treated at Albany Medical Center and released about two hours later.

Nicole Rickert, a senior, said the school does not have metal detectors but that monitors and administrators patrol the halls.

"It was the scariest thing ever," Emily Molineaux, a senior, told Capital News 9. "We had no clue exactly what was happening."

Molineaux said a teacher came running into her room and told the class to say put.

"He was saying, `This is not a drill,"' she said, adding that people were screaming to lock the doors inside the school.

A second student who was seen being led away by police was not involved in the shooting, and was simply questioned by police along with two dozen others, authorities said.

The student in question had been expelled and was after his ex-girlfreind.
Luckily, a special ed teacher noticed and wrestled him for the shotgun he was carrying, and was accidentally shot in the leg. That school is less then 10 min away from my house, I even have friends that go there.

He was going after his ex-girlfriend? I really don't understand some people. It was lucky that the teacher saw him with it. What exactly is bird shot? It must have been scary when the other pupils found out what was happening, and for you went you discovered some of your friends might have been shot.

Kinda doubtful that any of ur friends would've been shot if he only shot 3 times. That would be freaky, honestly to be walking down a hallway and suddenly a guy next to you pulls out a shotgun and... *BLAM!* *BLAM!* *BLAM!* everyone runs screaming. At least the teacher is ok. He pleaded not guilty? Jeez there must've been several dozen witnesses.

Yeah, there were quite a few people. And you never know who could have gotton shot, I mean, he had a gun and was going after his girlfriend, what would have stopped him from shooting another student?

One of em hit that teacher, and they don't say what the other 2 hit. Maybe they both just hit the wall or something? Wonder where he got that gun...

Bird shot is different than an actual bullet. There are many pieces that scatter. Hurts like hell to be shot with, but it isn't usually as punishing as a bullet.

Some guy at my brother's school (middle school) brought a knife to school and went after his girlfriend in the middle of class. Guess they were in a fight or something (obviously) but yea.. he's in jail.

Yeah, I live about an hour away from Columbine, if all of you remember that one. They even put our schools on lock down even though we were so far away. Let me tell you, even for just watching on TV< it was scary. They were still swarming the school with SWAT and stuff, saying they guessed at least 30 people were dead. Later that week I went with my family to the memorial service and it was just sort of chilling to walk around there. the windows of the school were all boarded up and the paths away from the school were still covered with so many footprints from the kids running. it was just .... scary. I can't imagine being there

That gives me shivers. How hard it must have been for them all to return to school after that...
