i'm not sure she left for starfleet medical i think but thats all i know

She (Gates McFadden) was pregnant- it was a maternity leave.
They didn't want to write in Crusher having a baby (Wesley was enough for the writers I guess). So they sent her to Starfleet medical.
Season 2 took place during the big writer's stike as well - that may have complicated things.
