PostFri Jan 16, 2004 6:42 pm    In Jarvis's eyes

Hey guys! Eversince my absence several months ago, a lot of ideas came into my mind... Both in general Trek and Voy Trek...

Since it is common in this site to have a lot of Voyager-related Fanfics, I'm going to try and make a narrative type of story based on the everyday experiences of an Ensign Jarvis...

I'll update *HIS* logs by the day...

Posting starts next week, when I get my new PC online..

Stardate 52047.7 (DAY 1)

------------------------

I took a deep breath and rested my head back on the lift, and closed my eyes. The Sentry was still docked in Utopia Planitia, as she was still undergoing final testing and diagnostics and crew rotation.

The lift hummed as it rose up the complex. I was going to be beaming over to the Sentry in a couple of minutes. The end of the monotonous hum roused me from my reverie as I marched into the nearest transporter room.

"Good day, sir. Ensign Carl Jarvis ready to beam aboard the Sentry." Handing a PADD to the pudgy Japanese Transporter Technician.

"Ensign Jarvis, you're just on time..." the Transporter technician said as he smiled, returning the PADD to me. "I was just about to beam this batch up... Step up on the Transporter pad and you'll be in the Sentry in no time..."

I smiled back, stepping up on the pad.

"HQ Transporter Room Seven Chief Matsumoto ready for transport."

"Copy that Chief Matsumoto. Energize..."

In a blink of an eye, I felt a tingling sensation of dematerializing on Starfleet Headquarter's Transporter pad...

***

"Ensign, are you alright?"

"Huh?"

I found himself eye to eye with a higher ranking Goldshirt.

"Ummm... Yes sir."

"Good, for a moment there I thought you were having a case of mild transporter psychosis..." the slightly elderly man smiled. "The name is Lietenant Lennard Johnstone..."

"Ensign Carl Jarvis... Nice to meet you sir..."

"Nah! The pleasure is all mine... I'm always glad to see new faces here in the ship... This is the second time her crew's been rotated. And this year, we have a lot of you tadpoles swimming along with us..."

"Tadpoles, sir?"

"Just an expression kid..." he gave him a big toothy grin. "Now, you go on now. The Doctor will be wanting to see ya..."

"Yes sir..." I smiled as I marched off towards sickbay.

***

"Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log Stardate 52047.7

My first day isn't that bad as I thought. I've met really interesting people. For one, the transporter chief, Lt. Johnstone is a very nice guy. He's quite friendly off-duty, I don't know otherwise, but he seems to be a very nice man. He reminds me of Grandpa a bit.

I've had my physical today and I found the Doctor to be quite good. I really think that she was a Betazoid. She seemed to know how to go around even her most uncooperative patients..."

*I laugh*

***

"Doc, I think I broke me neck!!! Oh Lord, I'm goin' to die aren't I? Doc, you've got to do somethin'! I don't want to die ye know!" An angry voice roared as Jarvis entered Sickbay.

Jarvis saw the Doctor taking a full body scan at the man lying down on the biobed. He was obviously in great amounts of pain, his face was red, but he was unable to move due to his injury.

"Calm down, Lieutenant. I'll give you a painkiller for that, so that I can conclude my scans and give you my prognosis..."

"Please hurry Doctor, I can't feel any part of my body..."

"Alright..." the doctor reassured, and turns to a nurse. "Give him 5 CCs of this painkiller and finish his scans... After which, forward it to my office..."

"Yes, Doctor."

I seem to have caught the eye of the Doctor for she acknowledged my presence before gesturing me to follow her to a biobed.

"You are?"

"Ensign Jarvis Ma'am."

"I'm Doctor Letecia Adams. Please have a seat..."

The Doctor was starting to do a medical scan on me when she asked, "Is this your new assignment Ensign?"

"Yes Ma'am."

"I see. Your post?"

"Ship Security Ma'am."

"I see." She merely said and started reading the tricorder data. "Well, you're in perfect health Ensign. But serving aboard this ship won't be easy since our new mission will be on the Beta Quadrant..."

"Yes, I know that ma'am."

Dr. Adams arched a curious brow. "You do? Well, in that case, do your best then..." she smiled and gave me a motherly tap on the shoulder.

"Yes, Ma'am."

"You are free to go, Mr. Jarvis..."

"Thank you, Ma'am."

"You're welcome. Are you going to report to Commander Romanov right now?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Can you please give this PADD to her please?"

I took the PADD. "No problem. I'll give it to her right away."

"Thank you."

With that I left Sickbay.

***

"Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

"The meeting with Commander Romanov was the most surprising..."

***

"Computer locate Commander Romanov..."

"Commander Romanov is in her office, Deck One Section Beta Three.."

And so with that I rode to the nearest turbolift and went to the Commander's office. A few minutes later I was standing outside of it.

I pressed the door chime.

"Enter." came the voice from the other side.

When I entered there was no one there. The chair behind the desk was empty. The desk, on the other hand, was full of a variety of components - from tricorder parts to a communicator taken apart..

"Commander?"

"I'm here. I'm just under the desk. The communicator's tranceiver fell on the floor and I can't seem to find it... You just stay where you are... Oh there it is!!! I found it..."

To my surprise the most beautiful woman, who seemed to be in her mide-twenties, greeted me. She was a foot or so shorter than me. Her dark brown hair was tied in what seemed to be a braid of some sort and was hanging at her back. She face was fair and her eyes were green. She was just beautiful.

"Ensign...?"

"Oh, sorry Ma'am. My name is Carl Alexander Jarvis... I've been assigned to Ship security Ma'am."

"I see. Is this your first mission...?"

"Yes Ma'am and I will show no leniency in my work..."

"That's good to hear. Well, it was nice to meet you Ensign. You were supposed to report to the Captain, unfortunately, he's been called to Starfleet Command for additional orders. He'll be back tomorrow..."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Ensign, you may relax a bit. This is not the Spanish Inquisition..."

"Thank you Ma'am."

"Well, that would be all for now. However, I expect you to report here tomorrow morning at 0700 hours to know your duty assignment."

"Yes Ma'am."

She nodded. "Dismissed."

***

"Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

"It was only an hour ago after talking to Lt. Johnstone at dinner tonight that I realized that the Commander didn't seem to be what she looked like..."

***

"May I join you?"

"Of course, have a seat!" Johnstone said, gesturing me to sit on the seat across him. "So how was your day?"

"It was great..."

"But?"

"I had this most curious experience. I met Commander Romanov, and man, I cannot believe that someone as young as twenty-five or twenty-six could easily get a rank that high!"

"Twenty-five eh?" Johnstone had an amused look on his face.

"Yes, twenty-five!"

"Boy, you must have your eyes checked. The Commander is already thirty-one years old, give or take a couple of months!"

"What?!?"

"Aye! She is. I don't know how she does it, but I do envy her..."

***

"Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

"Lt. Johnstone and I talked about her all night. And he even commented that I might have developed a huge crush on her. I had to laugh. She was beautiful but she was also way out of my league... Besides I've only met her for one day... I've got several years more ahead of me... "

*I let out a sigh.*

"I'm pretty sure that this assignment will prove to be more interesting than I ever hoped for... End log."

DAY 2
-----

Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log Stardate 52049.7

Damn, it was too late when I realized last night that I had completely forgotten to give Commander Romanov the PADD that Doctor Adams wanted me to give her. The Doctor called late last night but I think it was already too late for me to give it to her. So I decided to go to her office earlier than she expected.

And to my surprise, she was there... Earlier than what I was expecting...

***

"Ensign, you're early..." Commander Romanov said as she stopped right in front of me.

I didn't know anything else to say so I decided to just give her the PADD. "Umm... I forgot to give you this yesterday Ma'am... I apologize if I have impeded any of your work because of my forgetfulness..."

The Commander chuckled. "That's alright, Jarvis. This PADD merely contains the information of all the crew who have been assigned to the Sentry and have already been checked out... Although, I would have wanted to have this yesterday..."

I hung my head. I felt my embarrassment rise up to my neck and inside my head.

"Hey look, don't worry about it okay? The Captain doesn't arrive till tomorrow. I still have plenty of time to work on my crew report. Besides, I've already have my draft for the Security department's duty roster. I only need to finish the drafts for the rest of the crew's duty roster.

I look up to her, meeting her gaze. She was smiling warmly at me. She was very forgiving... And with that, I think I owe her one...

"Now come on. I want to talk to you about your duty assignment..."

***

Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

The Commander assigned me the position of Assistant Chief Security Officer since her second-in-command is extended on his last posting. Nonetheless, I was honored to take his place.

She also assigned me on the Beta shift. Not so early and not so late. I really like the schedule of the shift a lot.

Anyway, the meeting continued on and on for the entire morning half of the day. More and more junior officers were there so she decided to move the meeting in the Briefing room. Afterwhich, she decided to give us a lunch recess.

***

As I saw the last of the junior Security Officers file out of the Briefing room for lunch, I cast a glance at the Commander as I rose from my own chair. She was still sitting there, engrossed at reading the same PADD I saw on her desk yesterday at her office when I first met her. I think it contained specifications for the tricorder-commbadge thingamajig she was trying to create. And she didn't look like she knew that it was already lunch time.

"Commander?"

She didn't seem to hear me.

I cleared my throat and raised my voice a bit louder this time. "Commander?"

She still didn't hear me. She was really INTO what she was reading, her brows furrowed in deep thought.

I was amused by her dedication to what she was reading. She was indeed a very remarkable woman. I decided to exit the Briefing room quietly.

***

Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

Lunch was quiet. There was no one there whom I could talk to. Lt. Johnstone, I mean, Lennard wasn't there... so I decided to eat alone.

While I had my lunch, I decided to replicate the Commander a couple of sandwiches and a can of 21st-century canned orange juice. I hope she eats it though. I've been wondering a lot how come she was a bit too skinny for a Starfleet officer. Maybe its her workaholicism. I don't know...

Anyway, as soon as I was done with my lunch, I immediately proceeded to the Briefing Room for the continuation of 'my' orientation.

***

"Computer, deck one, Briefing room."

The lift hummed, leaned my head back and closed my eyes. I felt a sense of familiarity with it. I was no one but a lowly son of a farmer back in Earth. Then I went into the Academy. And it was one of those sounds that I felt "soothing" when I was homesick for our little farm on a small hill in the south of the Cebu province.

My mother was a native of Cebu. My father was Canadian. I couldn't help but feel homesick every now and then. He was a good man but he wanted me to be more of a farmer than someone who served in Starfleet. Despite all that, he knew that I wouldn't be happy as a farmer, so he decided to let me go.

"Excuse me?"

The voice caught me by surprise. I looked down and saw a petite Science or Medical Ensign with drowning black eyes.

"Umm.. Sorry. Have I offended you?"

She shook her head. "No but you're voice was quite loud in my head, and so are your feelings. They made me want to long for my own family as well..."

I stared at her and noticed that her eyes were so black. I had to guess that she was Betazoid.

"How did you know?"

"I have gifts... Courtesy of my lineage..."

"I see. Then I don't think I can hide anything else from you then..." I smiled.

She smiled back and nodded. "Yes. It would be a futile attempt..."

"Well then. I should introduce myself then... My name is Ensign Carl Jarvis. Security."

"Davon Luron. Ensign. Ship Nurse."

"Nice to meet you..."

"Same goes here."

As the lift stopped. "Well, I think I'll have to go now. This is my stop." She smiled again as she exited the lift. "See you around..."

***

Ensign Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

I arrived in the Briefing room and saw the Commander with the same pose as I had left her. She seemed to have stayed like that for almost half an hour... What was she working on anyway?

Anyway, I decided to disturb her now and gave her the food that I had given her...

***

"You needn't give me this Jarvis. I wasn't hungry... Well I was but I had more pressing matters to attend to..."

"But I insist. You must eat, Ma'am. Results of skipping a meal, when compounded, will eventually turn out bad... And I don't want that to happen to my senior officer now, do I?"

She smiled and accepted the food. She put down the PADD and started eating.

"So shall we continue with your briefing now?"

"Eat first, Commander. From where I come from, it is rude to discuss business during a meal..."

She smiled again and eventually laughed.

"Very well, if you insist..."

DAY 7
-----

Lieutenant Junior Grade Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log Stardate 52059.9

Today marks the seventh day of my stay here in the Sentry. Nothing much has happened since we left space dock. I was able to meet the Captain for a short while but other than that, I have not talked to him at all.

As far as I can tell and heard, Captain Vorak seems to be a good leader. Wise and sound in judgment. However, he was Vulcan. He followed the dictates of logic and regulation to the letter.

***

I was just about to go to the Bridge when I was summoned by the Captain.

"Captain Vorak to Ensign Jarvis. Please report to my Ready Room."

"Aye sir. On my way, Jarvis out."

At first I thought I had done something wrong, however as I neared his Ready room, I felt a bit nervous meeting him. It was just first meeting jitters.

I rang the door chime.

"Enter." As I entered the Ready room, I saw a dark-haired Vulcan sitting behind the Captain's desk. He looked thirty years old, more or less, in Terran years. But I knew he was older than that. Most Vulcan's were...

"I presume you are Ensign Jarvis, the Assistant Chief Security Officer, assigned to the Beta Shift?"

"Yes sir."

"Very well. Let me give you the basics in working under my command. We are going to embark on a mission that will take us several years in deep space. I expect a fully competent working crew within the duration of this mission. And since you are assistant head of your department, it is logical that you follow all ship's protocals and be an example to your fellow crewmates..."

"I have been in command of this starship for the last fifteen years of my career. I've been serving with Starfleet long before you were born and I expect full compliance to all my orders. I would also expect you to join Staff meeting in the event that Commander Romanov is unavailable and I expect full reports from you, approved by your Department head, submitted to me by the end of each week..."

"I see that you have been wondering why you have been chosen by Commander Romanov to assist her in her departmental duties..."

I nodded. "Yes sir."

"You have been highly recommended by your professors at the Academy and we have read your Academy student file. You may not have graduated from the top of your class but your records as well as your instructors insist that you are the man for the job. Do not let them down..."

I was speechless. I couldn't think of anything else to say except, "Yes, sir. I won't."

The next thing I knew, I was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. At first I couldn't believe it but when the Captain attached the second pin on my uniform collar, I was tempted to pinch myself. It really felt like a dream of some sort. A very wonderful dream so to speak...

"Very well, I put my trust on your capabilities as Assistant Chief Security Officer... You are dismissed..."

As I exited the Captain's Ready room, I heard my comm. badge chirp. "Romanov to Jarvis, please see me in my office."

"On my way, Commander. Jarvis out."

***

Lieutenant Junior Grade Carl Alexander Jarvis Personal Log continued

Surprisingly the events of this day definitely caught me off guard...

***

When I entered the Commander's office, I found her facing the viewport.

"Commander?"

"I hear you got promoted...?"

"Yes, Ma'am. To Lieutenant Junior Grade."

This time she turned around and faced me. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes told volumes.

"Congratulations to you Lieutenant. I'm sure you'll do well." Her face softened as her lips spread into a smile. "From now on, as my assistant, you will be handling personnel problems and other things in this department. I hope to see you do well..."

"Yes, Ma'am."

Suddenly my comm. badge chirped. "Bridge to Lieutenant Jarvis..."

I looked at the Commander who gestured to go on with the conversation. "Jarvis here. What is it?"

"You have an urgent transmission from Earth sir."

"This is Commander Romanov, just patch it through my office console."

"Yes Ma'am. Bridge out."

I looked the Commander. "Thank you, Commander."

"No worries, now take that call..." She winked as she rotated the screen of her office console to face him. "I'm going to get myself something to drink... You want something?"

"No thanks..."

"Very well."

When she moved away from her seat, I tapped a command to accept the transmission. The moment I did. I found myself staring into the eyes of my mother.

"Mother! What a surprise... What can I do for you?"

"Carl, I know you're on your way to a deep space mission but I had to tell you anyway..."

It was only then that I noticed my mother's swollen eyes. "Mom, what's wrong?"

"Carl, your... Your... Your Papa's gone..." My mother began sobbing.

The announcement caught me off guard that I didn't know what to say or do. However, my mother continued on.

"I know that this comes as a shock to you, son, but he died while he was working in the field... He had been very happy that you were accepted in the Sentry for an assignment. Although he would've wanted to see you for even a day or so before your departure, but he decided to not delay you on your first assignment..."

"Dad..." I felt as though my blood had left my body. For a moment there, I felt as though my heart stopped. And I think it did for the next thing I knew everything was turning dark and blurry, and Commander Romanov's voice as she talked to me seemed garbled and hushed...

DAY 10
-----

Commander Tatyana Romanov Log Stardate 52065.9

It has been three days and my assistant, the newly promoted, Lieutenant Junior Grade Carl Jarvis is still unconscious. I am deeply concerned at what has happened to my assistant lately and I am uncertain on how this will affect his attitude towards others as well as towards his work.

As what Dr. Adams said, he had suffered extreme emotional stress at hearing the news of his father's demise. It was clear that he was very much emotionally attached to his father. However, that is besides the point. Dr. Adams also found out something that greatly concerned me...

***

Three days ago...

Commander Tatyana Romanov paced back and forth in Doctor Adams' office as she awaited the results of the preliminary tests taken after the collapse.

The Doctor entered her office and made her way behind her desk. She sat there and took a deep breath before speaking any further.

"Doctor, what's your prognosis?"

"Well, Mr. Jarvis just suffered a slightly strong case of emotional trauma. According to his records, he seems to have quite an attachment to his parents, especially his father. Apart from that he'll be fine..."

"That's good to hear. When can he return to his duties?"

"Tomorrow. I'll keep him here for the next couple of hours for observation..."

Romanov smiled in relief. "Thank you Doctor. I'll see your patient first thing tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I'll go and inform the Captain."

Adams nodded. "Go ahead. I'll keep you updated in his condition."

Two days ago...

Commander Romanov entered Sickbay with full hopes that Mr. Jarvis had recovered. Although she knew that the emotional suffering would take time to heal, she was relieved to think that her assistant wasn't permanently physically impaired by the collapse.

"Doctor Adams?"

"Commander! I was just about to wake our patient up. Come..."

Romanov approached the biobed where Jarvis lay. She looked at his face and found faint traces of pain on it. "Thank you Doctor. Please proceed."

Dr. Adams took a hypospray from the medical tray beside her and pressed it on Jarvis's neck. The two waited for Jarvis to open his eyes but he continued on his catatonic state.

"Doctor?"

"That's odd. He should awake by now." Dr. Adams said as she looked at the medical monitor beside the biobed. "His readings are normal and asleep. I'll administer another dose."

Commander Romanov nodded.

Doctor Adams pressed the hypospray once again on her patient's neck. A few moments have passed and still, Jarvis would awaken.

"Doctor, I don't understand. What's going on?"

"I... I don't know. Give me a couple of hours more, and I'll find out what's wrong with him..."

"Very well, Doctor. Let me know when you know what's going on with him..."

The Doctor nodded.

Present time...

Romanov was in her office reading the latest Security report when her comm. badge chirped.

"Dr. Adams to Commander Romanov. Please report to Sickbay. I think I have the answer."

"Romanov here. On my way."

Still in the present time...

Commander Romanov entered Sickbay and still found Jarvis catatonic on his biobed. He looked the same way as he did when she left him in Sickbay days ago. She looked away and felt dread creep up to her as she proceeded to the Doctor's office.

"Doctor?"

The Doctor was reading information on the console in front of her. She looked up and gave her a weak smile. Romanov looked closely at the woman. Dr. Adams ran Sickbay day in and day out. It surprised her to see the older woman less tired than she was. However, today, seemed to be not one of the good doctor's better days...

"Commander, I'm afraid your assistant's condition is much more serious than we thought..."

"But I don't understand. I thought you said that he was just sleeping?"

"That's what I first thought however, I don't know when he'll awaken or in what state of health he will awaken into or he might not awaken at all..."

"What?" Commander Romanov's eyes widened at what the Doctor said.

"What do you mean?"

"He's got KWS or Kusanagi Withdrawal Syndrome... It's a rare disease that was discovered in the late 21st century. And because of its rarity, Doctors have found that there is no cure for such a disease..."

"KWS? What triggers this disease?"

"There are no triggers for this disease... It's genetic and hereditary. However, for families with this disease, it may lie dormant for several generations, then appear in someone in a family. This usually occurs when someone who has it is exposed to extreme emotions like anger, fear, sadness, and all the other negative emotions you can think of. The problem with this disease is that it is often mistaken as a simple fainting spell. However, it can be differentiated from the latter when the person cannot be roused from unconsciousness by medicine or by force..."

Romanov met the Doctor's eyes. "You mean? That's what happened three days ago?"

Adams nodded. "At first I thought that his body wasn't quick to respond to medicine, however, when I administered the second dose, that's when I started to suspect. Also, his REM patterns are the same... It doesn't seem to change, not one bit."

"So what do we do about this?"

"We'll have to wait until he rouses from it on his own...."

"But you said you don't know when or he might not wake up..."

"That's right. We'll just have to wait and hope that he decides to wake up soon, or else you'll have to find another assistant Chief Security Officer to replace him for the time being or permanently..."
