PostMon Jan 19, 2004 3:26 pm    Trek Executives Fear For The Fate Of 'Enterprise'

An anonymous source revealed that executives at Star Trek: Enterprise are trying to save the show from cancellation, and that this may include taking the show to another network.

This anonymous source spoke to Cinescape's Patrick Sauriol about the atmosphere on the Enterprise set. "Star Trek's executives...are running on 'Red Alert' mode to save Enterprise from cancellation doom, and this may include shopping the show to another network or cable channel," the source revealed.

According to the source, the cancellation of Jake 2.0 was unexpected, as both it and Enterprise had been promised full seasons. "Apparently, Trek staffers were assured by higher-ups at UPN, including people in Les Moonves's office, that Enterprise and Jake 2.0 were safe," the source said. "After all, Jake 2.0 was signed to complete this season's run of episodes."

Just last month, the news broke that Enterprise's number of episodes was going to be cut down from 26 to 24, and that the show might be moving to Friday nights (story). However, the Friday night news was dismissed as an incorrect rumor and denied by UPN (story).

However, now rumors of a schedule change seem to be resurfacing. "With the hammer coming down on Jake this week, in addition to the 'trimming' of UPN's order of Enterprise episodes this season, Star Trek's executives fear the promises given were disingenuous at best," the source said. This also comes on the heels of UPN's recent refusal to comment about the future of the show.

Although not unexpected, it's sad news.

Quote:
You may remember speculation from last year that STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, the latest TV series in the long-running sci-fi franchise, was in possible danger of being cancelled. Most of these fears seemed to originate with the news that two less episodes of ENTERPRISE would be needed for this season, and when combined with the show's lackluster ratings, produced gossip that the show could be hanging by a thread. There was also talk that the show was being moved to Friday evenings from its Wednesday perch on the network.

UPN suits and ENTERPRISE producer Rick Berman dispelled the rumor that the program would move to Fridays but did confirm that a shorter run was in store for the third season. Nevertheless, the news was downplayed as a minor issue and not one serious enough to deliver a deathblow to the struggling series. But last week's abrupt and unexpected cancellation of JAKE 2.0, the series that followed on UPN directly after ENTERPRISE, may have sent a pulse of fear through the cast and crew. At the very least it prompted an individual to write in and tell us what they say the scuttlebutt is on the set right now...

"I have a source inside Paramount saying the ENTERPRISE set is awash in rumor of its move to a new timeslot with perhaps its ultimate cancellation on UPN.

"Apparently, TREK staffers were assured by higher-ups at UPN, including people in Les Moonves office, that ENTERPRISE and JAKE 2.0 were safe. After all, JAKE 2.0 was signed to complete this season's run of episodes.

"But with the hammer coming down on JAKE this week, in addition to the 'trimming' of UPN's order of ENTERPRISE episodes this season, Star Trek's executives fear the promises given were disingenuous at best and are running on 'Red Alert' mode to save ENTERPRISE from cancellation doom, and this may include shopping the show to another network or cable channel."

[They preferred to remain anonymous.]

Even if what our scooper says is indeed being whispered by ENTERPRISE stagehands, it may not be what UPN brass are planning behind their closed doors. Perhaps.

It would be a real shame if we lost enterprise at this stage, the show has improved drastically this season and they have started to focus and build good stories and arcs.

Take it to Spike TV. I'll bet all my money that the ratings will jump.

I like Enterprise and all but personally I think they should have taken the Star Trek concept farther in to the future instead of a look in to the past. That's what Gene Rodenberry ment by the whole thing in the first place; taking what you have and utilizing it wisely to prepare for the future. I think a more futuristic version of Star Trek would have done better, and yet again, I am not putting down Enterprise in any way.

No its not, its Starfleet's past. I meant a show that took place beyond Voyager's last episode.

Gosh, you said the point was to look into the future, and Enterprise is our future. But I guess I understand what you meant now.....

I've enjoyed the direction that the writers have taken the show this season, but there is still a lot that can be done. This long story arc has come at the expense of a couple of the characters, noteably Ensign Maywheather, Hoshi Sato and Doctor Phlox. Enterprise needs to start to build up the cast a bit more, the shows will get stale if the only focus on one to three of the cast members every week. The Andorian episode was solid, I would have liked to see Shran stick around. This news is not unexpected to me, but I'm confident that Enterprise will stick around, if not on UPN, at least somewhere.

Finally, someone that shares the same enthusiasm for the show as I.

same rumours were spread about ds9 and voyager during the first couple of seasons, but both shows managed to finish there 7 season's. Both needed time to "get settled" and to build out a fanbase + some better eps and this will probably be the same with enterprise, personally i don't understand why the show has these low ratings, the stories so far this season have been very good imho although, like said by the gentlemen above, maybe there forgetting to highlight some main characters (anyone seen alot of mayweather this season?) and introduce some of new ones (couple of the MACO's for example) in more detail.
Enterprise has the potential to become very good .. if UPN makes some work of it.

I think it should be cancelled. Its just no good....theres a few good episodes but mainly boring repetitve and slow storylines. And the use of characters is pretty low too...they only concentrate on 3 peeps. lt. reed. captain archer and commander taka (sp).

Sci-fi in a series sense is dying out...after enterprise, stargate, whats left ?. ---
